Surprises

This one's pretty short, but it's necessary. Thanks for the reviews, Koira! I'm glad you're liking it so far!

Sarah had been feeling better for the past couple of days. She honestly didn’t know what had triggered her strange mood over the past few days. It was just an overpowering feeling of emptiness.

She always felt better after spending prolonged periods of time with Ryan, but not always for the best reasons. She had fallen in love with him last year after hearing his solo in the fall concert. He sang “The Prayer” with a girl from their chorus, and in her opinion, sounded better than Josh Groban.

When he had told her he was gay, it wasn’t really a shock. First of all, Sarah had always been prone to falling for gay men. Her friends called it the “Sarah Syndrome”. Secondly, people usually thought Ryan was gay upon first meeting him because he was moderately effeminate. But he dissuaded almost all suspicion by proclaiming his straightness and dating girls occasionally.

So it shouldn’t have done any damage to Sarah when he told her. But somehow, even now, a year later, it still pained her a bit. Deep down in a little tiny corner of her heart, she was still in love with him. But she knew that her love would never come of anything. So she kept it in check. But it tended to make her very lonely at times.

For whatever reason, this week had been worse than normal. Perhaps it was the stress from the show. Or maybe it was all the extra attention Ryan was getting from people. He always had a few people (a good mix of girls and guys) that were after him, although he didn’t like any of them in that way. But this week he had been getting more attention from Finn, and for whatever reason it made Sarah a little jealous.

She felt bad about it, so she said nothing to him. But keeping it in only made her feel worse; made her realize how much she hated being single, hated not having that someone. She was particularly brooding on this hatred in drama on Friday.

Thus, it came as quite the shock when Finn approached her, looking strange but collected all at once. “Hey, Sarah,” he said to her, smiling like a true leading man.

“Hey, Finn. What’s up?”

“Not much. Listen, I was wondering if you could help me with something,”

“Um, okay?” She raised one eyebrow.

“So, you know how I’m dating Lyndon, right?” Lyndon was one of the most popular and attractive girls in school. She was also in the top 5% of her class. So yeah, Sarah knew.

“Yep,” she said, still looking at him confusedly.

“Well, lately I haven’t really felt like being with her, you know? And I don’t know what to do. Should I break up with her?”

Sarah looked away, thinking. “Well… I would tell her you’re unhappy. But I don’t get it,” she eyed him suspiciously, “Lyndon is just about the hottest girl in the school. She’s smart, she’s captain of the swim team… you guys really worked well together, I thought.”

“Yeah, I know,” Finn brushed his hair back, looking away. “I dunno. It’s weird. I’ve been… I guess… thinking about someone else.”

“Oh?” Sarah was intrigued now. She was pretty sure that Finn was about to come out to her and profess his love for Ryan. She readied herself. “Who is it? It’s ok, I promise I won’t tell anyone.”

His hands raked through his hair nervously. “Well, actually… it’s you, Sarah.”

She stared at him blankly for a moment. “Wait. What? You’re kidding me.”

“No, I’m serious,” he told her, even more nervous. She had never seen Finn like this before- he was always so cool and composed. Now he was practically shaking. She knew he must have been telling the truth. And, she realized, she didn’t mind it. Not at all.

“That’s… wait, no. God. Ryan would be so upset…” she mumbled, mostly to herself.

“What? Ryan? Why?” Finn asked.

Oops.

“Oh, God,” she whispered. “Nothing. You didn’t just hear that.”

“I don’t understand,” Finn murmured, looking very confused.

“Nothing, never mind,” Sarah said defiantly, silently cursing herself. Ohshitohshitohshit.

“Wait,” Finn said. “Do you mean… Ryan…?” He faltered, and looked at her plaintively.

“No, nothing. I don’t mean anything. Just forget I said anything, ok? Please?” And she stalked away to the other side of the classroom, busying herself with an inane question for Mrs. Keller, leaving Finn standing with a look of mixed comprehension and disbelief.
