Chapter 4
(Pay the Piper)

Marcus ran lightning fast, and slammed his body right into Rico. He hooked one arm under Rico’s and lifted him up into the air. At first Rico did nothing, too shocked to understand what had just happened, and when he did try to struggle against Marcus it was like trying to push against a stonewall. Marcus held Rico with one arm while holding him in place with his back pressed up against his chest, his right hand moved up as he grabbed Rico’s hair in order to yank his head back hard to expose his neck. Marcus could see his carotid vein pulse fast and sank his fangs hard and deep to drink in his blood. He did it to cause the most pain and fear. Rico tried to free himself, but soon became weak and dizzy from the loss of blood. His jaw slacked and his eyelids began to slowly close. Marcus did not want to kill Rico, not yet. He only took enough blood to keep him alive but very weak. The fight was out of Rico and he lost control of his bladder, Marcus’s nose twitched at the scent. He was not surprised.

While Marcus held Rico up in the air, he watched Sammy spinning around looking for his friend, then to eventually give up and start to walk away. Marcus reached into Rico’s pocket and found his car keys a small smile snaked across his lips; he let it drop, on Sammy’s head. He could hear Sammy’s angry voice; it seemed he was not pleased with the way he found the keys. Marcus landed softly near the car and let Rico slide down to the ground. He paid no attention to Sammy and walked over to where the boy’s body lay. He could see how badly the condition of the body was in, and he thought for a moment that it was too late to do anything for him. However, as he looked closer Marcus was amazed to see life still lingered. He wasted no time and bit into his wrist and placed it over the boy’s mouth, Marcus gathered all his will into the boy and commanded him to “DRINK”

“Drink child, and suffer no more.” Marcus spoke in a low soft command as he leaned in and spoke into his ear. It seemed like hours had passed when the boy did not respond to him, which in fact it was only a few seconds. Then Marcus felt the boy drink, and while he drank, Marcus bit into the boy’s neck careful not to cause any pain he drank and savored his taste. In the blood he tasted how badly damaged the boy’s body was in, he was shocked that he still lived, as his blood flowed into the boy’s body Marcus could see it slowly begin to heal him, but due to the severity of the wounds the healing was extremely slow. He drank more of the boy’s blood to the point of almost stopping his heart completely, and then he continued to feed the boy and made sure he drank enough to mend his wounds.

Marcus realized he was acting on instinct, not stopping to think that by the exchange of blood would not only heal the boy, but would change him from human to what Marcus is, Vampire. Why he chooses to save the boy was a mystery to him, but he felt pulled to him, as if his soul knew him and needed to be near him. It confused Marcus, but decided to think about his actions later. For now he wanted to save him and let him live.

Marcus knew that Sammy was watching he could hear him gasp and almost throw up. He quickly held his gaze on Sammy and with his mind, he willed Sammy to obey him. One of the benefits of being what he is was his ability to almost control one thoughts and he was able to will Sammy to obey him. Marcus never stopped looking at the other man, and he could feel the boy trembling from the cold in his arm. He removed his coat to cover the boy’s body, wiped some of the blood away from his face and turned his full attention on Sammy.

Without even touching the man, Marcus willed Sammy’s neck to squeeze causing pain and constricting his airway, another little perk that he enjoyed. He then grabbed the man by the shoulders and sank his fangs into his neck. Marcus fed to replenish his own blood loss; as warm blood gushed into his mouth, he could hear the heart beat furiously and then slow down. The man tried to struggle to free himself but soon weaken and hung limply in Marcus’s arms. When Marcus drank his fill, he then dragged Sammy’s body to fall next to Rico; both men were not going anywhere. This allowed Marcus more time to continue to care for the boy without hindrance from anyone.

He knelt down by the boy’s body and he could see that most of the smaller wounds were completely healed, but he also knew there were damage that is more extensive internally and continued to heal at a snail’s pace. Marcus worried if it was best to just take him out of his misery; he was concerned that although his body may heal he had to wonder how much damage this might have caused his mind, it would be a shame if he were forced to destroy the boy if he went rogue. Just then, the boy’s eyes fluttered open and looked at Marcus, tears welled up in his eyes and spilled down his face. He gasped and cried in a low soft whimper, still in agony for his body while healing, was in pain. Then he closed his eyes and fell silent. Even though it was dark, Marcus was able to see the color of his eyes, green, like precious jewels. He could only imagine the pain the boy’s body was going through, the pain of dying and at the same time the pain of his body going through the change from human to vampire. Watching the boy’s face stirred emotions in him that he felt has gone cold so many years now. He really should just put him out of his misery and walk away, but he stayed and the longer he looked at him the more he felt the need to keep him alive.

Marcus could not understand why he felt compelled to help this child, and he found himself being possessive and protective over him. This in turn angered him that anyone would want to harm him. From what he could see this boy suffered, it was unbelievable that he still lived, he was small framed and not very tall and yet the fact that he still lived proved how deceiving he looked, for he was strong to still be alive. He had to get the boy out of the cold and to his home where he could take better care of him. First, he needed to finish what he started, and when he looked at the two fools near the car, he smiled and walked towards them. He stopped when his toe stepped on something and he looked down and saw a piece of square plastic. He picked it up and saw that it was a jewel case with a DVD inside. Marcus remembered that they argued about it and was curious to know what was on it. He would deal with this information later, but for now, both Rico and Sammy needed his attention.

Sammy and Rico were still alive, but very weak and unable to move much, as they sat in the front seat of the car they could see the blond haired stranger; he was standing far enough from the car, just looking at them with a slight smile on his lips. They just sat there, dumb founded wondering why the stranger just stood out there in the cold, freezing cold winds blew and they noticed he was not wearing his coat. They wondered why he did not seem to be bothered by it, and as they sat there watching him, both Sammy and Rico began to realize that this man was very different and it frightened them somehow.

“Oh shit,” they both breathed out at the same time, they had a bad feeling about this. They could not believe this was happening, they remembered how the stranger just picked them up like weightless rag dolls and tossed them inside the car. Each one turning to look at each other, feeling a cold chill grip them; and they just knew it was not from the weather, but before they could even think of doing anything to get away…..

Suddenly the car radio came on, Ella Fitzgerald belted out “Heat Wave” an old familiar jazz tune, then they first heard it, before they felt it, whoosh!

And fire,

Burst out all around them.

{♫ We’re having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave ♫}

It seems that Sammy and Rico finally had some idea what hell could be like, the heat was unbearable and flames were spreading fast. They could feel their clothes catch on fire, both men tried to move and get away from the fire surrounding them, but in their weaken state they were unable to do much.

{♫ The temperature’s rising, isn’t it surprising. She certainly can can-can ♫}

Their bodies would not cooperate and they were forced to sit there and just let it happen. They screamed and pleaded with the stranger who just stood there, and watched them suffer.

{♫ She started a heat wave, by letting her seat wave ♫}

They could feel and smell their skin cook, their blood boil, and hear the sounds from their hair crackle as flames licked up the back of their necks, the pain was unimaginable and the smell of their bodies cooking even worse. Finding it hard to breathe and just the slightest movement was so excruciating.

{♫ In such a way that, her customers can say that ♫}

They screamed until their voices became horse and muffled, reduced to begging and crying pathetically. They shook their heads in disbelieve and cried out in agony as the flames engulfed them. The pain so intense making them unable to even think clearly, and perhaps the last cohesive thought that went through Sammy’s mind was how long this pain will last.

{♫ She certainly can can-can ♫}

Sammy did not have to wait long for the pain to end, and Marcus had already picked up the boy’s body and floated up into the sky as the car exploded ending in a fiery hell. Bits and pieces of both car and body parts landing everywhere on the ground near the south side of Manhattan’s riverside with a view of the statue of liberty.
