Chapter 4
I followed Cale up the stairs, through the bathroom, and to the kitchen. I sat down at the table while he searched through the cupboards.
"Uh...what do you want to eat? We have....canned peas...canned corn...cereal....canned beans....chips..."
"Why do you have so much canned food?"
"Actually" he said, "We don\'t eat it. We just keep it around in case our house is searched."
"What?"
He sighed. "We had a couple of close calls in the past. The police searched our house and thought it was suspicious that we didn\'t have any food, so that\'s why we have it. Canned food is the cheapest, so..."
"Well, what does Maggie eat?"
"Whatever\'s around. She doesn\'t stay here all day like you do, she leaves and gets her own food."
"Well...I guess I\'ll have cereal."
Cale grabbed a box and a bowl and set them on the table. I poured the cereal in the bowl while he got milk from the fridge, which I poured in the bowl while he got me a spoon.
I sat silently eating while Cale watched me. The awkward silence finally got to me.
"So, what were you and Maggie whispering about earlier?" I said between bites.
"What?"
"When I came back from Wade\'s room. You two were whispering about something."
"Oh, that. I don\'t really think it\'s any of your business."
"You may be right, but if you don\'t tell me, you\'re just going to allow my mind to wander. I might just assume there\'s something going on between you two."
"Me and Maggie? No. There\'s nothing."
"I have no reason to believe you" I teased.
Cale sighed. "Fine. We were talking about you."
"Me?" I asked.
"And me."
"You?" I asked again. I should probably stop. I sound like a parrot.
"What about us?" I asked.
"Well, I was telling her about how much I like you."
"But. ... .... .you don\'t really...know me"
"I know more about you than you think."
"What are you, a stalker or something?" I asked. I was dead serious.
Cale laughed. "I\'m a vampire. My senses are, well, more sensitive than yours. I can sense your feelings, I can hear your thoughts."
"Wait, wait, wait a minute. You can hear what I\'m thinking?"
"Yes. Not clear as a bell; it is harder than hearing words, but yes, sometimes I can hear your thoughts."
"And sense my feelings?"
"Yes. And I sense right now that you are a little bit angry, correct?"
"Well, yes, I am angry." I snapped, "These are my feelings, and my thoughts, and I\'d rather not have strangers exposed to them."
He sat silently.
"I\'m sorry...But earlier...when you were in Wade\'s room...."
"Yes?" I asked.
"Do you like him?"
I blushed. "Why?"
"I could hear your heartbeat fast with him. I heard your thoughts. You wanted to talk to him more. Hug him more."
"I..No. No, I don\'t like him, I don\'t know him. I just wanted to thank him for carrying me to bed."
Cale scoffed. "What, so he\'s a hero now? Anyone could have carried you to bed, it\'s an obligation, really. If he didn\'t, you could have gotten really sick, sitting there cold and naked for a long period of time."
"Why do you not like Wade?" I asked.
"Well, you give him so much credit, but if I were there, then I would have done the same thing. I would have even stayed with you to make sure you were all right."
"Cale-"
"It\'s like you worship him or something. I was the one who suggested we keep you around, Emi, I was the one who didn\'t want to kill you, but I never sense you wanting to talk to me more, I never hear you want to hug me."
"Cale."
He looked up.
"Are you jealous?"
He smiled and nodded. "I am. I like you, Emi. And don\'t tell you that I don\'t know you, because you know what I am. You know what I can do."
I nodded. "I know." I took the last bite of my cereal and Cale took the bowl to the sink.
"I\'m sorry, Cale."
"What?" I heard him say at the sink behind me.
"I\'m sorry. I didn\'t know you liked me."
I felt his hands on my shoulders.
"Would I hover over you on my bed if I didn\'t like you?"
I remembered the night before. Stupid. Stupid Emilia. Of course he likes you.
"Oh, yeah."
"Oh, yeah", he mocked me.
I laughed and turned around to smack his arm.
"Shut up!" I said.
He laughed and wrapped his arms around my neck.
"I\'m sorry" he whispered in my ear, "It\'s just that you can be kind of oblivious."
"Well, sorry if being captured doesn\'t seem very romantic to me" I joked.
Cale frowned. "You know I wasn\'t aware I would like you when I did that."
I stood up and grabbed his hand. "I know." I assured him, and led him back downstairs.
"So, where exactly are you taking me?" Cale asked. Truth be told, I had no idea where I was taking him, I just wanted to get out of the kitchen; the tension was getting a little out of control. I don\'t know if it was because I was intimidated by him or attracted to him.
"Um. It\'s a secret."
Cale chuckled. "Well, it can\'t be too hard to guess. You\'ve only been to my room, Wade\'s room, and your room, and I would guess you weren\'t leading me to Wade\'s room."
"My room?" I asked.
"Yeah, your room. The white room is where you will be staying."
I felt my cheeks get hot. It was a good thing Cale was behind me; I didn\'t want him to see me blushing. He had a big enough ego as it was.
"So, do you even know where we\'re going?" Cale teased.
"Well, now that you\'ve mentioned it, I am a bit curious about my room."
I walked down the stairs and opened the 3rd door on the left. A queen sized bed took up most of the space in the room, sitting right in the middle; a white down comforter lay messily on the bed. The vanity sat vacant on the right side of the room, the dresser on the left. I walked in and sat down on the bed, still holding onto Cale\'s hand.
He stood in front of me, looked at my hand that was holding his, and smirked. I quickly let go of his hand and his smirk got bigger.
I felt the blood rush to my cheeks and switched my glance over to the empty closet next to the door. He kept his glance on me and it was hard not to look back at him.
Finally, he sat down. At first I thought this was a good thing. I don\'t think it was possible for him to be sitting any closer to me. He kicked the door shut and turned his body to face me. I slowly turned my glance from the closet to Cale and bit my lip.
"Nervous?" he grinned.
I curled my lips inward and shook my head.
"You\'re lying."
"Nope." I said meekly.
"I can hear your heart beating fast."
"Huh-uh."
"Don\'t lie" He got closer.
I leaned to my left, trying to escape him.
"W-why would I be nervous?" I asked.
"I don\'t know. Why would you be?"
I leaned further to my left and lost my balance.
"Eek!" I shrieked and fell off the bed. I felt Cale\'s arm under my shoulder blades and his hand on my waist. His beautiful face was close to mine, grinning at me. There was no way I could feel like more of an idiot.
He pulled me back onto my bed; now I was in a laying position. I found myself in the same place I was the night before, except in a different room - laying down with Cale hovering over me.
"Are you scared of me, Emi?" he teased.
"I...um. I. W-w-why. Wh-why would I-"
He placed his index finger to my lips and smiled.
"It\'s all right. I guess you took my warning the first night you met me."
Are you scared? You should be
The thought sent chills down my spine, stronger chills than I thought. A jolt was sent through my shoulders and I let out a gasp. Cale laughed, now laying on his side beside me.
"Face me, Emi. I want to see your face."
I rolled over to see him. His icy blue eyes peered deep into mine. If I wasn\'t already blushing, he would have been sure to have notice my reaction.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing. I just wanted to look at you. I like you Emi."
"But-"
"I thought I told you that I know you more than you think."
"....But I can\'t accept that you like me because I don\'t know you."
He raised an eyebrow.
"All right. What do you want to know?"
"What?" I asked.
"What do you want to know about me?"
"Uh...um. Well..I guess... What\'s your favorite color?"
He laughed lightly.
"What\'s so funny?" I asked.
"That\'s what you want to know about me?"
"Well, would you rather me ask you something else?"
"Depends on what"
I thought harder this time.
"Why do you like me?"
"Well, you\'re quiet, but still curious. You ask silly questions. You\'re not bad to look at. Does that answer your question?"
"Yeah." I said quietly.
"Any other questions?"
"What\'s it like? Being a...a vampire?"
He smirked. "You wanna find out?"
My eyes widened and I shook my head. He chuckled heartily.
"It\'s fun."
"How so?" I asked.
"Because I get to tease cute girls."
I probably would have fainted if it weren\'t for my fear that he would bite me while I was unconscious.
He laughed again, "You know, if you were to blush more than you already are, I\'d have to take you to the hospital."
"It\'s your fault!" I yelled, putting my hands to my cheeks to hide my blush.
"Ah, so you do like me!"
"No!" I shouted.
He pushed my hands away from my face and replaced them with his own. He inched closer to my face slowly until I could feel his breath on my lips. I don\'t know if it was a fear impulse or what it was, but for some reason, I closed my eyes. I could feel his icy lips press gently against mine. He licked my bottom lip and just as I kissed him back, he pulled away slowly; smirking.
"Do you like me now?"
I couldn\'t think. I couldn\'t talk. I just stared at him with my mouth slightly open.
He chuckled lightly and walked out the door.
"I thought so."
"Uh...what do you want to eat? We have....canned peas...canned corn...cereal....canned beans....chips..."
"Why do you have so much canned food?"
