Witching Woman: Ariel- 0002

Chapter Two

-Witching Woman-
~Ariel~

This whole thing was a farce. I did not understand at all why Valentine submitted to this indignation. She was Queen, Alpha female of the Remesian Pack, and yet she submitted to the will of her ridiculous subjects. This was absurd- her Mate would be furious if he knew of this.

No one would listen to a Mage who wasn’t full blooded Remesian, not in these days where magic was suspect by many whose only weakness was the inherent power within the few yet powerful magic makers. So I had no say in the Lady’s affairs, though I was her closest ally and counselor besides Munin and Sofya, the wolf-witches who were also her advisors.

Those two feather brained geese were standing at each corner of the Lady’s Throne, where they could do their liege lady absolutely no good. I could do nothing myself, for my power and influence was all behind the scenes of the political games, and I could not be seen affecting the Lady’s decisions in any way, or the idiots on the Council of Thirteen and the silly little Moon Council would give birth to a litter of demonically possessed kittens. I didn’t have time to deal with such things- the University had rules about meddling with other cultures’ laws and regulations, and magic was not a remedy for things Mages didn’t like.

Even for me.

And then I Saw… and I ‘pathed.

Your Mate is in serious trouble, milord.

I… what… can’t… Valentine….

Hexes and hellfire! He was too far away for me to pick up his telepathic message. Curse it, I didn’t have time to bolster my reception with my magic.

The Pack meeting was about to start.

The wolves were about to start howling at the moon, and Valentine was about to be in some serious trouble, because this was not going to go her way. Any idiot could see that.

The mad prince was here. And the only ones who could even possibly be convinced of that fact were the princesses and their guards. Not to mention my own mage child, my student with the silver hair and divinity in her blood. Only those five could catch the scent of the mad prince, and understand just who he was and why it mattered that the little cretin had arrived at the Den, and that he was about to cause some serious issues for my Lady and her daughters.

On pure instinct, I glanced up at the fifth story landing, spotting the silver haired child who frequented my quarters and received the training necessary to harness her divinely sparked magical powers. Kayli glanced at me for only a moment, long enough that I saw the silver blue shine of her eyes as the light from the Silver Orb reflected within them.

I shoved back my hair-- so remarkable because it burned like ruby fire, and gave me the name Unhidden Flame-- and rustled my wings in agitation. Kayli shouldn’t have been here. None of the children should have been here, but I could taste smoke, moonlight, silver, steel, and ice. It was the magical taste of those five children-- my student, the princesses, and their bodyguards. They shouldn’t be here… but there was nothing else that could be done to prevent what would soon happen.

The war was about to begin, and only I knew it.
