Chapter 4 At the beginning of time
“Everything” Chikyu replies on his question. “What are those youkai creatures, why are they after me, how is it possible that you can beat them, what was that strange red light around you, why am I having these nightmares..”
“Alright save your breath,” Taiyõ interrupts her, “Those youkai are demons and I don’t know why they are after you. They probably think you would serve as a nice snack. I can beat them because I’m trained for that. You probably imagined that red light because I don’t know what you are talking about. And how should I know why you are having nightmares.”
He stood at the other side of the room, with his arms crossed, looking at Chikyu. On his face was an annoyed expression. “Anything else?”
“Taiyõ please mind your manners.” A voice came from the hallway, soon after that a woman entered the room carrying a tray with a teapot, three teacups and a withered plant. She walked towards them and placed the tray on a small table.
“Hi, I’m Naomi, Taiyõ’s mother. Just call me Naomi.” The woman made a small bow as greeting. “I’m Chikyu, nice to meet you.” Chikyu answered back politely.
Naomi started pouring the tea into the cups. “Please don’t mind Taiyõ’s rude behavior to much. I thought I taught him to be polite but I don’t think I succeeded.” While she looked towards the direction Taiyõ was in she placed the cup in front of Chikyu. Next she placed a cup for Taiyõ on the table nearest to him.
Chikyu turned slightly pink when she noticed the mistake the woman made. “Ehh Naomi? You gave me the plant instead of tea.”
“Oh dear, sorry that’s my fault I should have paid some more attention. Now would you mind handing me the plant?”
Chikyu bend forward and reached for the plant. As she picked it up something strange happened. A warm feeling flowed from her hands to the cold pot she was holding. As a reaction to that she released the pot causing it to fall on the ground and break. The soil made a dark place on the expensive looking carpet.
“Gomene!” Chikyu apologized quickly, looking up to Naomi and Taiyõ. Her hands where shaking as she tried to gather the broken pieces of the flower pot. A small smile played on Naomi’s face while the expression on Taiyõ’s face made her feel like an idiot.
“It’s alright don’t worry about it. I’ll clean it up later but now please take a seat.” Naomi’s calm words sounded strange to Chikyu. As she sat back down on the couch again Noami handed her the good cup of tea. “Drink, it will calm you a bit,” her gentle voices made Chikyu do as the woman said.
After a small silence Taiyõ walked towards the place where the plant had fell on the ground. “Masaka,” he mumbled to himself as he looked confused at his mother. Chikyu looked at Taiyõ’s confused face and placed her attention to the plant as well. With a shock she turned to Taiyõ’s mother as well who had been looking at the plant too. However Naomi didn’t seem surprised at the least bit about the strange occurrence.
On the ground in the middle of the spilled soil and leaves there lay a flower blooming from the plant which had seemed dead.
“You two should see your faces right now,” Naomi laughed, “they look hilarious.”
“Mom stop joking around. How is it that you are the only one not surprised about this.” Taiyõ looked at his mother demanding an explanation. Chikyu was looking at her hands. *Could it be that the warmth that I felt has to do something with that flower?* Shaking her head at this impossible idea she brought her attention back on Taiyõ’s mother who was looking straight back at her.
“You are wondering if the sensation you felt has something to do with that flower, aren’t you?” Shocked by the accuracy of the woman’s words Chikyu averted her eyes and looked back to her hands and the mess on the floor.
“Don’t worry I really don’t mind,” Naomi said aiming at the spilled soil and leaves. “And I’m sorry but I have to admit that I gave you that plant on purpose.”
Taiyõ sighed and sat down in a chair. “Don’t tell me you planned this all out.”
“I’m really sorry,” Naomi said looking at Chikyu as she sat down next to her on the couch. “Taiyõ told me about the night he saved you and what had happened when he got you of the roof. I told him to bring you here but he didn’t want to.” As she nodded with her head towards Taiyõ she continued. “He said it was probably nothing and that it was nothing to go all wild about for me. But as I was in the kitchen I heard you saying that you have been followed by youkai frequently after that evening.” A concerned look was on Naomi’s face.
Still confused Chikyu replied; “Yes, one time I got followed and attacked by one when I was walking home from school. And at night I could see their shadows at the boundary of our garden. The one attacking me disappeared as well when I reached my garden. I haven’t figured out why though.” She looked at Naomi to see if the woman believed her.
“I can tell you why they couldn’t enter your garden. But first I like to know something.” Naomi told her. “That evening when you got attacked did you notice something strange? I mean besides the vines around your hands.”
Chikyu was surprised. The woman not only seemed to believe her, she also seemed to know more about it. “Ehh well,” Chikyu hesitated, “When the youkai started coming after me, he well kinda, well he attacked me but he didn’t.” Taiyõ gave her an irritated look.
“You see it was about to attack me.” Chikyu was hesitant to continue, “and I raised my arms. I don’t know what happened but there was a green light and the youkai, well, I know this sounds stupid but it got reflected or something.” The look on Chikyu’s face was almost like she was trying to apologize.
“I expected something like that,” Naomi told Chikyu earning her two strange looks from Chikyu and Taiyõ. “Alright, alright, I’ll explain it. The reason the youkai can’t enter your garden is because the ground is sacred.”
”Nani?” Chikyu looked confused.
”On the ground on which your house is build there used to be a shrine. This shrine was removed a long time ago. But both the shrine and the ground surrounding it are sacred. A youkai can’t set foot on it since its obviously a demon.” Naomi continued her story.
”But why did they remove the shrine?” Chikyu asked surprised by this explanation.
“Well,” Naomi answered; “that’s because a woman sold the shrine and the ground surrounding to the city. She wanted to get rid of it because she thought the shrine was old and decayed. To the city, the shrine was useless. It was neither a shrine for Buddha nor for any other god or goddess anybody knew. The shrine was dedicated to the 5 elements and their wielders. Because it was known to no-one, they found it al right to bring the shrine down. One of your ancestors, the husband of this woman, was against this. This person was living at the shrine and had been taking care of it. Before this person his parents had taken care of it and their parents before that etcetera. They had taken it down before he could do anything against it though.” Naomi paused to take a sip of her tea. “The husband was furious of his wife and refused to move to another house. I think he bought the ground back and build a house on the place the shrine had been. As far as I know this house has been passed on from father or mother on son or daughter. And now you live in it.”
“A shrine for the 5 elements? I’ve never heard of that either. Why would they make a shrine for that? Sounds kinda pointless to me.” Chikyu shook her head.
“Well that brings me to the main point of my explanation. What I’m going to tell you now will explain what happened to you that evening and what just happened with the plant, why the youkai’s are after you, why Taiyõ can fight them and why the shrine was dedicated to the 5 elements because that is where this whole story starts.” As Naomi finished her tea she sat back in the couch. Looking first at Taiyõ, who gave her a look back, and then at Chikyu she got ready for a long story.
“The story begins when the universe was still nothing. The spirits of the elements also called the Kishinki wondered through this nothingness of space. They went from place to place and got to all the edges of the universe creating planets in their way, they had been doing that since millions of years. Because the universe was still silent after the creation of countless planets, stars and suns the Kishinki decided to not only make a planet but create live as well. To do this they needed to combine their strength and powers. These powers where the five elements as we know them: Earth, Fire, Water, Wind or Air and Energy.
Without those five elements, no live would be able to exist on the planet which they had called earth.
Of course the first thing there was, was earth. The thing the planet consisted from. In the middle a burning centre of lava expanding in solid ground on the outside of the planet. On this ground plants and flowers sprouted from the fertile soil.
In order to let the nature grow water was needed to keep the soil fertile. The water spread out over the planet resulting in giant seas and smaller lakes and even small streams and swirly rivers. Providing liquid to every part of the new planet so live could grow and expand.
These products of nature needed a suitable temperature and light in order to remain existing.
In order to accomplish that the sun was created. This consisted of fire, which also was present on the planet itself. With the light, temperature, water and soil the trees and plants grew, creating fresh air in the atmosphere. To spread this air all over the planet so every part of it could benefit of it the wind was created by the fourth element. Now the planet had a clear air, fresh water and fertile ground. However, these elements of earth, water, fire and wind worked only as long as the Kishinki where around. As last the fifth element provided the planet with energy. It set of a chain reaction through the other four elements causing them to collaborate, thus creating life. This way the new created nature could truly live and expand and it meant the planet could consist without the help of the five Kishinki.”
Naomi stopped to pour herself and the others some more tea. Taiyõ looked a bit bored but Chikyu was caught by the story. Naomi continued.
“As crown on their work they gave live to humans and animals. After finishing their most complex creation they staid a little while on the planet allowing their energy to recharge. While they did so they where able to see how life expanded and how the humans took charge over the earth. Happy with what they had made, they decided to leave the earth and return to space. At first there was a nice harmony on the planet as the humans lived along side with the animals and where appreciative of the nature surrounding them, providing them with everything they needed. They honoured the five elements and lived happily.
But the Kishinki had forgotten that energy always has a negative side. In the dark places on the planet this negative energy gathered. With the use of the other elements this energy formed a new live in the form of negative spirits. At first these spirits came out of their shadows and went looking for their place in this world. However because they had been forgotten by the Kishinki there was no place for them. Feeling left out and angry at the Kishinki for this, the negative spirits started to use their weak power to influence the humans and animals. This way the negative feelings of the humans where born. Feelings of jealousy, of wanting to dominate others and becoming greedy among other things.
But they still couldn’t do much in this form. The negative spirits then tried to get a hold of a body and seeing that they weren’t able to make one they tried to take over those of humans and animals. Only the strongest of the negative spirits proved able to take over a human body. The humans had a strong mind and spirit and where therefore not easy to control. The lesser spirits took over the body’s of animals. In these forms they where able to spread even more chaos in the once calm and harmonic life.
Over the years the spirits got better adapted in taking over body’s and they started to change in order to become as strong as possible. Instead of taking over another body when they grew tired of the old one they used their energy to make adjustments. This resulted in a cross bread between humans and animals, the youkai. Only the strongest youkai have a body like that of a human because that provides the most advantages in moving, fighting etcetera. But these body’s have animal features as they are stronger, have more stamina, better senses and better reflexes for example. It depends on the youkai type what kind of advantages they have.”
Naomi sighed. “It never should have gone that far, but we can’t change what happened in the past I guess.” She took another sip of her now cold tea. “Hmm this isn’t good anymore. Does anyone want something else to drink?” Without waiting for an answer she stood up and walked to the kitchen.
Chikyu was looking in the distance. “Have you ever heard this story before?” she asked Taiyõ. “Of course I have. And I’m wondering why I need to stay here to listen to it again.” His mood didn’t seem to have improved during the story.
“It’s a nice story but what does your mother want with this? Why is she telling us this?” Chikyu wondered.
“She isn’t telling me the story she’s telling you, I already know it. And how should I know why she does it.” Chikyu looked to the bored expression on the boys face as he use the chair he was sitting in as his bed. She smiled seeing that this, by no chance, fit. His long legs hang over one side of the arms of the chair while his head rested to the back of the chair.
