Cousins

CHAPTER 4:

Chief Dagwood talked long with Officer Endo. Over two hours they chat, and Chief Dagwood spilled brand new information over the officer. The officer on the other end began as shocked, and terrified. Chief Dagwood expected that. When he told Dawn she had a nephew, she was shocked, as well, and did not take the boy in. But now, this young man spoken to actually said he’d be willing to meet Michelle and allow her to stay with him. Yes, Chief Dagwood was ever thankful.

He glanced at the room where Michelle was being kept. She stayed in the hospital, still. She was awaiting news of her mother.

Rubbing the back of his neck in a nerve-wrecking manner, Chief Dagwood knew he had to tell Michelle of this news. It’d either be good news, bad news, or a mix of both. Whichever sort of news Michelle would see it as, Chief Dagwood only hoped she’d accept it.

Taking in a deep breath, Chief Dagwood opened the door. He found Michelle sitting there on a white-sheeted hospital bed. She held her self with her arms, and never took her eyes off the floor. She was stiller then a statue.

Closing the door behind him, Chief Dagwood slowly walked over to a brown chair. Grabbing it, he takes a seat in front of Michelle. He tries to look into her blue eyes, but her brown hair also fell over them. “Michelle,” Chief Dagwood whispers, “I—I just want to say that I’m very sorry for your loss.” Michelle stays still, so Chief Dagwood continues with some moreover happy news, “I hear that your mother is going to be fine. However, she’s pretty beat up and the doctors don’t know when she’ll reawake.” Chief Dagwood watches as Michelle slowly raises her head, “They say it could take weeks, maybe months even. She’s most likely dramatized, and she may not be herself once she awakens.” Chief Dagwood watches tiny tears drip out of Michelle’s eyes. “Michelle,” Chief Dagwood leans closer, “We found someone who is willing to take care of you, but he lives far away—all the way in Japan.”

“J…” Michelle begins to speak, but softly, “Japan?”

“Yes,” Chief Dagwood continues, “It appears you have a Japanese cousin living there. Do not worry. I’ll talk with your teachers about homework issues. We won’t make you attend a new school in Japan—I know this all a lot for you to take in.”

“Why…” Michelle sniffs, “Why can’t I stay here? Why—why can’t I stay at my home, or with you?”

“Me,” Chief Dagwood laughs, “I’m sorry, but you must stay with a family relative or go to live in a Take in Home. Would you rather stay in one of those?”

Take in Home’s are like orphanages or retiring homes for people with no home, money, or family. They’re a special business that has buildings all over the world. There have been businesses like these before, but this special business didn’t begin running until the year of 5068.

Michelle let more tears fall. She’s heard scary stories of Take in Homes. She rather live on her own, or with this cousin she just now heard of. She slowly shakes her head at Chief Dagwood.

Chief Dagwood nods. “Do not worry Michelle. This man, you’re cousin, I’ve chatted with him, and he seems very nice. He lives in an apartment with a spare room available for you. He even told me it may be fun having someone to talk to.” Chief Dagwood can see Michelle is listening closely now. “Michelle, this cousin of yours, he’s been an orphan since he was a small child. His mother, your mother’s sister, was murdered. He had nobody, but now he’ll have you.”

The room grew silent. Michelle’s arms had loosened around her body as she stares over at Chief Dagwood. She slowly wipes her nose before asking: “What’s—what’s his name?”

Chief Dagwood is happy to hear Michelle ask this. He gives her a smile before answering her question. “His name is Kiyoshi Endo. Now Michelle, are you willing to go over to Japan and meet him?”

Michelle thought this through. She was almost intrigued about having a foreign cousin. She didn’t know she had any other family. Her mom and dad were all she had, and now she’s going to meet her cousin. She gives a small nod. “Sure, but can I just see my mom first?”

Standing to his feet, Chief Dagwood helps Michelle to her feet, all while keeping a smile on his face. “Of course you may.”

--

Keys jingled in the door lock before it finally opened. The person entering the building had his or her face hidden by darkness. The person removes the coat on their body before turning on a light. With the face still not visible, though body indications and muscle tones show the figure is male, he slowly walks into his apartment, and sinks into the couch. His hands are brought up to cover his hidden face as he gives a sigh.

“I can’t believe I agreed to take her in,” the man whispers, “This is—this is unbelievable.” The man lowers his hands as his blue sparkling eyes are shown, “I have a cousin.”

--

Chief Dagwood led Michelle down the hospital hallway. They passed many doctors, nurses, and sickly as they finally began approaching the door that would lead Michelle to her mother.

Michelle had butterflies flittering in her stomach. Her mother was in that room, but would Michelle be able to recognize her? Michelle began feeling nauseous. She stood there now, unsure if she could go through with this. She looks up at Chief Dagwood, who only stares concerning at her.

“Michelle,” Chief Dagwood said, “You don’t have to see her.”

Shaking the dizziness out of her eyes, Michelle stood tall as she grabbed for the door knob. “No, I—want to see her before I have to leave.”

Chief Dagwood nods, though he could still see Michelle was shaking almost uncontrollably.

Soon Michelle got the door to open, and she slowly walked into the quiet room. She sees only one bed; only one person. It was her mother. Michelle holds back a gasp at the sight. Her mother lay there with many bruises covering her body. Splotches of black, purple, and red covered her body. Her eyes were closed shut, and she was still. Many machines Michelle could not name sat on either side of the bed her mother lay in. Michelle did her best to be brave. This was her mother, not some stranger. Michelle did her best to handle staring at her mother’s lying form.

“Mommy,” Michelle makes her way over, “Mommy, it’s me, Michelle.”

Her mother never stirred. Michelle can only cry as she takes her mother’s hand. It was ice cold. Just touching it made Michelle’s entire body shiver. Her mother appeared dead, and Michelle thought for the worse. She, however, was happy to see her mother’s chest slowly rise, and then fall. She was breathing.

“Oh Mommy,” Michelle falls to her knees and begins crying, “Please wake up! I don’t want to go to Japan. I don’t want to leave school, my friends, or you! Please Mommy, please open your eyes!”

Michelle thought she saw one of her mother’s eyes twitch, but the eyes never opened. Michelle let her tears fall freely. She did not want to leave her mother, her friends. She did not want to leave America! Life seemed unfair at that time. Michelle hated life—she hated how everything was turning out. She only hoped that it would not get worse.

--

After seeing her mother, Michelle was immediately driven back to her and her parents’ house by Chief Dagwood. He told her she should pack all her greatest clothes and belongings, for it may be a long while before she returned.

Michelle sat there. She sat just staring at her room; at all her stuff. An opened purple suitcase sat on her bed. It was already filled with many clothes. Michelle thought of what else to bring. One particular item caught her eye.

Standing on a white dresser was Michelle’s white carousel horse. This precious item was a gift to her from her mother. Slowly picking it up, Michelle cradled the carousel horse and rubbed it to her soft cheek. It was her most delicate, her most favorite possession. Wrapping it in bubble wrap, Michelle sets it carefully into the suitcase between soft clothing before locking the suitcase shut.

--

Michelle stood there in the airport. Many other people rushed past her to get craft tickets, their bag, etc. Michelle stood beside Chief Dagwood, too, who was busy buying Michelle her ticket to Japan.

As she stood there, Michelle thought of the miserable past. Her parents got in a terrible car crash, her father was dead, and her mother was in a coma. Michelle had to say goodbye to Robin by telephone, and promised her weeping friend she’d call every night. She promised to write, too.

Chief Dagwood soon appeared again, and he held a ticket in his hand. He handed it over to Michelle, and gave her a smile. “Everything is set. Your flight will be leaving an about fifteen minutes, so if I were you I’d head in line to depart.”

“What? Wait a minute,” Michelle frowns, “Aren’t you coming with me?”

“I’m afraid not Michelle,” Chief Dagwood smiles, “But do not fear. Your flight should only take two hours. Your cousin promised to pick you up at Tokyo Airport at precisely 4:00.”

Michelle wanted to cry again. She did not want to get on that flying craft alone. Her suitcase was already being boarded onto the craft, and people were heading for the line. Michelle gasps as Chief Dagwood hugs her. “Be strong, little one,” Chief Dagwood shoves Michelle toward the line, “You will get through this. Everything will be alright!”

Michelle could only nod as she went to get seated. She gave Chief Dagwood a wave as she vanishes around the corner once the lady checked her ticket.

--

Holding tightly to her seat, Michelle felt her whole body shaking. She was now high in the air, flying over the beautiful blue ocean. She was on her way for Tokyo. There, she would meet him; her cousin. She was afraid to meet him. She kept asking herself questions such as, “What does he look like,” “What’s his apartment like,” and “What is he like?”

Michelle knew that her questions would all be answered in good time.

--

Tokyo Airport was not nearly as crowded as the one Michelle flew from. Michelle took this as a good sign. She may find her cousin easier, but once she gets her purple suitcase and looks around the waiting room, she feels hope has left her. She looked to a clock, which luckily was also in English (the second language of the world in the future. English was everywhere.) The time did not read 4:15. Michelle knew there was a major time difference between America and Japan. She only wished she would get used to it. What would be about the time to start making dinner at her house was a time she’d be sleeping in bed here.

Michelle felt very dizzy, then, and went to take a seat. However, she felt as if she were being watched. Turning her head, Michelle saw a young looking man walking towards her. He was a little taller then her, and had short black hair that stuck to the back of his neck. He had one surprisingly large bang that fell in between these sparkling blue eyes. His skin was peach.

Michelle gasped. Was that him? Was that her cousin?

“Hello,” the man speaks with a very childlike voice, “Are you, by chance, Michelle Ackley?”

“Y—yeah,” Michelle swallows a lump in her throat, “Are—are you my cousin?”

“I believe that’s me,” the man bows, “My name is Kiyoshi Endo. Welcome to Japan, Michelle.”
