regrets

His fingers set a cigarette between his lips and clicked a lighter to life beneath it without even thinking as he walked along the alley. Smoke curled around him and hung in the air, taking on vague nightmarish shapes as it slithered around his head. He sat down hard on a crate, taking a deep drag from the cigarette and leaning back to blow the smoke into the overcast sky.

"Can\'t you just...go away for a little while?" Maybe it\'ll rain later. Smoke doesn\'t like rain. Although that means he\'ll be under his skin instead of in his breath, but at least he won\'t have to see him and hear his little sounds. Drake\'s cigarette perched half-falling from between his lips as a hand came up to rub at his eyes. "Can\'t you just leave me alone? I don\'t care so much if you come back. Just a little while to myself, that\'s all I ask."

The smoke darted around him, motions halfway akin to a playing kitten and a hunter circling its prey. No answer came but vague pangs of hunger for things other than food and a roiling darkness welling up in his belly. He leaned forward, hand slipping back into his bangs as the other plucked the cigarette from his lips and flicked the long ash off of it unconsciously. A few flecks of blood were released from his fingertips as well. He didn\'t want to see the demon right now, didn\'t want to see how it linked the cigarette tip and his lips with a faint trail of smoke, so he stared emptily at the ground between his feet while the fingers in his hair massaged into his scalp.

Some days, when the demon was sated with blood and whatever the hell it did to the people it killed, it was almost easy to walk near other people. Well, not easy, but he could do it if he bent his will to holding the demon under his skin or in his breath. Other days he had no choice but to go looking for someone who wouldn\'t be missed, or someone who was walking alone, or a couple who just had the bad luck to cross his path. And he didn\'t even mind most of the time. It was actually fun sometimes, the shock of adrenaline and the chase - if the demon let him have it - and the interesting things people said and did as he came up with new ways for them to die. He never would have thought that there were so many ways to kill someone, never would have realized just how fragile the human body was.

But sometimes he just wanted it to stop. Sometimes he wanted to be able to look at his skin without seeing the dark patterns roiling underneath it. Sometimes he wanted to be able to walk among the crowds. Sometimes he wanted to argue over a bill with a waiter in a restaurant. Sometimes he wanted to be able to make love to someone without having to sacrifice them.
