Unsure Steps

---Hi everyone! Sorry this story is going so inconsistently right now. I’m working on longer chapters, better character development, better descriptions and better grammar. Lol. Plus, I just moved in for my freshman year of college so I’m freaking out tons with my incredibly horrible course load. I’m really working hard on making it better though. Everyone’s suggestions are helping out tons too, so please, keep it up! I love you all for it!! And if anyone would like to see something happen in the story, just let me know and I’ll see what I can do. Thanks!

Lissa: Thanks! I’m glad you like it! I’m working on making the chapters longer and someone suggested that I add some more to the earlier ones, so I think I might do that. Thanks again for the review, I wicked appreciate it!

Dee: Yeah, I’ve been really crappy so far about more characters and action. I’m hoping for some good plot builders in this chapter though. I really appreciate your reviews by the way, it’s really helping me I think.

Js: Thank you. I’m glad you find it interesting. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!!

Mistresskiwi: Thank you for reviewing! I think I will go back and do as you suggested with the earlier chapters, but I might wait until I have another one or two chapters up. I don’t know if the updates will come as frequently as before, my major has so much homework and its killing me. Lol. Thanks again!

Jason’s body stopped functioning. The second he saw Felix, his body froze up. He hated to sound cliché, but that moment would have been a perfect time to say 'Is it even legal to look that sexy?' That was all he could think of then, and even that wasn’t a too well-formed thought, his mind had gone blank at Felix’s perfectly pert ass in his impossibly tight girls’ jeans. To Jason’s dismay, the only two words that came to his mind as adjectives were: adorable and sexy. This night was already starting off poorly.

He must have been staring for a while because suddenly his view was blocked by Mike standing directly in front of him with a curious look on his face “you.. uh… up to anything?” Mike asked, it was more of a rhetorical question though, to let Jason know he’d been caught.

“N-no… I was just um, going downstairs.” He said quickly, turning to brush past Mike and then jogging down the stairs and into the kitchen. Mike stood at the stairs for a moment, watching Jason get flustered before he turned his attention to Felix, still checking himself out in the mirror.

“Hey, Felix!” he said from down the hall as he progressed towards the small boy.

“Heya, Mike!” Felix chirped. Mike was usually the quiet voice of reason in the house and tended to only talk to Felix when he needed a scolding, but the two had been close for years. “What can I do ya for?” Felix asked, still all bubbly despite the fact that he was probably about to get a lecture.

“uh… can we talk really quickly? I’m a little concerned about something.” Felix nodded and pulled Mike into his room before closing his bedroom door behind him and then taking a seat on his bed, his feet swinging off the edge.

“What’s up?” Felix asked, patting the spot beside him which Mike took.

“So uh… what’s up between you and Jason? Cause… I’ve known you for a while, but you never show off like that in front of people. You know you made Jason uncomfortable yesterday, so why would you purposely stand there with those jeans on just for him to see you?”

Felix tried to hide a smile. Was Mike jealous? Yeah they had their thing in the past, but Felix thought that Mike wanted that in the past. “Welllll…” the younger began. “If he doesn’t want me to come on to him, then I’m just going to make him want me so bad that he can’t stop himself from coming on to me!” he added a childlike giggle at the end, hoping that Mike wouldn’t be too upset with his evil web.

Mike nodded, but stayed silent for a moment. “Felix, I think there’s more to Jason. Like… have you ever looked into his eyes?” Mike spoke with a certain tone of voice at that point that Felix had only heard once before. Mike wasn’t usually this upset. Before Felix could begin to feel the sympathy that had begun to rise in him, he was suddenly struck by jealousy. Was Mike falling for Jason? Not only would that have just ruined his ego trip a few minutes ago about Mike maybe still having feelings for him, but now he might also have competition for his current love interest. Definitely not cool.

But Felix shook his head. In all honesty he never really had taken the time to really look into Jason’s eyes. He knew that they were silvery-grey, but that was about it. But now that Felix thought back on it, Jason had never been one to make eye contact. He didn’t notice it before, but now that he thought about it, Felix thought it was kind of weird.

“Maybe you should sometime.” Mike said softly, interrupting Felix’s thoughts. “They look scared.” Mike’s own voice sounded frightened just thinking about it. But Mike had always been good at empathizing with others, mostly to the point where he made himself depressed. That’s where he’d gotten himself into trouble with Felix just over a year ago. He felt so bad when Felix told him he was in love with him and he couldn’t return the emotion. Mike had felt so horrible in fact that he told Felix that he felt the same way just to make him feel better. The night had turned into what Mike thought was passionate love making, and Felix saw as just a fuck. The next morning Mike had awoken by himself in a cold bed, with a note written with terrible penmanship: 'Morning Mike! Look, I just don’t think this is going to work out between us. No hard feelings though, kay? You’re still like my best friend ever. – LY Felix xoxo'. Mike had literally thrown up after reading the note.

“Just… don’t do to him what you did to me, okay?” Mike added. He knew Felix was a good person, and he wasn’t even that sexually active, he just made a few really poor rash decisions here and there, and Jason just seemed… kind.

Felix nodded. Maybe Mike was right, maybe he was going about this in the completely wrong way. “But I can still look sexy tonight, right?”

Mike was about to roll his eyes when he looked over at Felix and realized he was serious. Mike half smiled. Felix actually wanted to look good for Jason. So Mike just nodded and got up. “I’ll meet you downstairs in a few, kay?” And Felix nodded.

Soon enough the five boys were cramming into Dane’s small Saab, Eddie bringing his girlfriend so there were one too few seats. Felix didn’t waste a second when they realized they were down a seat.

“Don’t even worry about it guys, I’ll sit on Jason’s lap. You won’t mind, right Jase?” the boy didn’t even wait a second for a response before he was cramming Jason in to the car with the others, and sitting right on his lap. Jason felt his anger rising. He’d specifically said to Felix that he hated physical contact. What was he playing at anyways?

The fifteen minute ride to the movie theater seemed agonizingly long for Jason, where Felix seemed to be bouncing on Jason’s lap like they were on a dirt road, when in reality, the ride was quite smooth. Everyone else was polite enough to pretend they didn’t notice, but it was impossible to ignore the complete over exaggerations Felix was making of every slight move the car made. Felix also took forever and a lot of wiggling to get out of the car and Jason was about ready to kill him.

Once they were all out and heading in to join the giant line at the door of the theater, Jason pulled Felix to the side and kept him by the car, letting the others know to go ahead.

“Felix, what were you doing in the car? Didn’t we talk about this yesterday?” Felix stared at Jason a bit surprised. The guy actually sounded upset!

“I-I was just fooling around…. I thought you’d like it…” he said confusedly.

Jason shook his head in disbelief, his hands going up in the air “No! you didn’t think I’d like it… I told you yesterday that I hate physical contact. You can’t mess that up! It’s pretty clear cut!”

“Yeah, but whyyy? It doesn’t make any sense. It’s not like your ugly or something. I mean, you really seem to be a sweet guy.” Felix responded, still insanely confused.

“So because I’m nice that means I want some kid to pounce my back and then bounce on my lap in front of four other people? I’m sorry, that’s messed up logic.” Jason still sounded pissed, but it was now Felix’s turn to return the emotion.

“Well gee, Jason. That makes a lot more sense. I’m glad I realize now that you just think of me as ‘some kid’. Yeah, that really makes me feel like a million bucks.” The amount of sarcasm in his voice could have killed anyone.

“Are you serious, Felix?! How long have you known me? For like what, two days? And not to sound terribly redundant, but you don’t know me. At all! And I don’t know what sort of bonding moment you think we had, but trust me, if there was one, it was only one sided.” It was harsh, but that was why most people tried not to get Jason upset.

Jason was already turning to walk towards the street while Felix was biting his lip, chin quivering, trying to hold back the tears. He’d really thought that Jason was interested in him. Even just a bit. “J-Jase… I’m sorry… I didn’t know… I didn’t know it was that s-serious.” The small boy said, the tears falling now, his voice shaky and weak “W-where are you going?” He called out after the older boy, scared and truly upset for the first time in a really really long time.

“I’m walking home. You go and enjoy you’re movie, I don’t want to be here anymore.” Felix got scared when Jason spoke, the anger that he was clearly showing a moment ago had left without a trace, his voice was monotonous again. It creeped the hell out of Felix and he began to vaguely wonder how often Jason masked his emotions.

Felix sat down on the curb hunched over, trying to stop his tears from falling. He felt like a complete idiot out there in the dark wearing his dumb girl jeans and skin-tight shirt. He’d tried so hard to look good for Jason, and the other boy hadn’t even noticed.

He looked up when he heard light footstep and saw Mike walking towards him. Felix had never felt so happy to see him. He stood up and walked over to Mike and hugged his middle, nuzzling in to Mike’s chest, the tears coming down more now. “Mike, I th-think I really like him this time.” He said between sobs and sniffles.

Mike nodded as he rubbed soothing circles in to Felix’s back. “Yeah, I don’t think you’ve ever cried over anyone before.” He said thoughtfully. “But you’ve never really known someone who didn’t let you in at the first chance opportunity. Most people open right up to you.” Felix nodded this time before Mike continued. “Mind if I impart some advice upon you?”

Felix giggled and shook his head “I love you’re advice.” Mike smiled softly at the compliment; he always thought it bothered Felix.

“I think that Jason has a big history, and I think it makes him want a simpler present. And something bad must have happened to him physically, cause really, no one gets that upset about being touched, especially by someone as cute as you.” Felix smiled when he realized Mike was trying to lighten the mood a bit. “So I mean, take it slow with him. What’s the rush any ways? You’ve got him for the whole year, yeah?”

“What’s the rush?!” Felix quickly was smiling again and almost back to himself “Dude, can you imagine what all the girls are gonna do when they see him in class tomorrow. I mean, he’s HOT! You know that, I mean, yeah, you’re gay.”

Mike’s heart began to pound. He’d never told Felix that he hadn’t been interested in him that night. In fact, the two had never even talked about the “incident”.

“Wait… Mike, you are gay, right?” The boy in question remained silent for a few moments before he shook his head.

“No.” He stated softly.

“B-but… then… what was that night all about?” Felix felt like he was breaking again. Could he handle two rejections in one night?

“I-I felt bad, Felix.” He sighed, removing his hands from around the boy as he went to sit on the curb. He motioned for the boy to join him which he did hesitantly. “You looked so heart broken when I hadn’t immediately responded the same way. So I thought if I did it would make you happy.” He said, sincere guilt in every word.

Felix nodded, but couldn’t deny the huge lump in his throat. “Kay.” He said in a cracked, uneasy voice. “um… I think I’m gonna follow Jason on his trek home.” He said weakly. Mike nodded solemly. He really didn't want Felix walking at night by himself, but it might do him good to clear his head.

“okay, um… I’ll see you when I get back later then, okay? There’s a bus that leaves every twenty minutes about a block away. I want you to take it. I don’t feel safe with you walking around tonight, okay?” Felix nodded and took the money for the bus that Mike was handing him. No words were exchanged before they walked their own ways.

--

It’d taken Felix only about a half hour to get back home at that point, the bus arriving at a very convenient time for him. The ride itself was hardly interesting. Him and one girl about his age were on, both minding their own business. There was about a five minute walk from his stop to the house, where Felix suddenly realized how curious he was about Jason. He was mostly silent, but seemed intelligent and kind. He was sexy, but seemed to dislike being touched. He clearly was emotional, but showed no emotion. At that moment, Felix decided that no matter how long it took, he was going to figure out Jason Briggs. For once, Felix actually cared enough about someone to take the time to understand them.

Once he got home he was curious as to whether or not Jason had gotten home yet. The house was silent and there were no lights on, and everything seemed untouched. He debated knocking on Jason’s door but figured if he was home, he should probably give him some space.

Putting the talking with Jason on hold, Felix made his way down the hall to his room, and pushed open his door. He changed into his sleeping clothes and curled up in his pastel colored bed. He wasn’t quite tired yet so he replayed the events from the evening in his mind. Soon enough the tears came down again, but this time Felix didn’t try to hold them back. It was okay to cry, after all.

He hadn’t thought he’d been loud, but a few moments into his sob fest, a knock came to his door. Felix figured Mike had come back feeling bad for him. “Come in” he called out, shocked to see Jason push open the door. Jason was only wearing his sweatpants, and for the first time, Felix really got an idea for how perfect Jason’s body was.

“You’re not crying about what I said earlier, right?” Felix was caught off guard by that question, but nodded.

“A little bit.” He stated simply. Jason sighed and sat at the foot of Felix’s bed.

“Don’t.” he said, the monotone beginning to bother Felix, but he said nothing about it. “Look, Felix. I’m just… I don’t know. Are you okay?”

Felix shrugged. “You really do suck at talking about emotions, huh?” he said with a smile, whipping away a few tears. Jason smiled and let out a breath of air and nodded.

“Yeah, I really do.” He waited another moment before continuing. “I think you’re a cool guy, I do. It’s cool that you’re… I dunno, happy about a lot of stuff, y’know, but I have to get used to that.”

Felix nodded and smiled. “I’ll be patient with you if you’ll be patient with me.” And Jason couldn’t help but smile wide.
