You Can't Prevent What You Can't Predict
Thankfully, Principle Connor only gave Pete a warning. I guess it pays to have your principle and father being old college roommates sometimes.
Pete walked outside towards his bike and saw Bethany sitting next to it on the ground reading a book. Pete slowed his pace; just watching her read.
He didn’t understand why guys didn’t throw themselves at her. Maybe it was because of the rumors of them being a couple. But whatever it was he liked not having to beat guys away from her with a stick. Of course, he would have used a stick, perhaps even a bat. Pete was incredibly protective of Bethany, everyone knew that. His reasons for being so protective were always a little blurred though. Was it because he saw her as his little sister? Perhaps it was because she was so fragile from her family life. Or was it was because of something more? No one really knew.
“What are you staring at?” Bethany asked as she brought Pete out of his daze.
“Oh, umm, I just was thinking how much you owe me.” Pete smirked a little, and then reached for her hand to pull her off the shimmering pavement.
“What do you mean?” Bethany’s confusion rang loud and clear in her glowing golden brown eyes.
“I got a role in the play.” Before Pete could reach for his or Bethany’s helmet he was engulfed in one of Bethany’s bear hugs.
“Oh my gosh! What part?” Pete loved making her happy; she had this spark in her eyes that lit up her entire face making her absolutely radiant. Pete felt like he was on fire from her radiance at times even.
“That dude named Jim or whatever.” Pete really didn’t want to talk about the play. It only reminded him of his little ‘chat’ with Mr. Turner.
“Oh my god! We’re both leads! This is so great! Aren’t you happy?” Bethany could always tell when Pete was sad or upset. One of the down falls of being friends with a girl he guessed.
“I just had a long day. Ready to go?” Bethany nodded and took the helmet that Pete was holding for her.
Pete and Bethany hopped onto the bike and drove off, away from the school, and away from Mr. Nathan Turner… at least until the bell rang tomorrow.
Bethany didn’t feel like going straight home, so Pete brought her back to his house. It wasn’t unusual for Bethany and come home with Pete for dinner and finishes homework. In fact Pete’s family had always thought of Bethany as one of the family so it was never an issue nor was it ever questioned.
Once they pulled into the driveway it started rain. They pulled into the garage and ran into the house as fast as they could.
“Bethany! Oh honey I’m so proud of you! I heard about your transformation into a leading lady!” Mrs. West greeted them as they ran through the kitchen door and out of the rain. Despite Bethany being soaked from the down pour, Mrs. West enveloped Bethany in a huge motherly hug.
Pete watched as Bethany drank up Mrs. West’s praise and affection. He loved that he could bring her home; that he could offer her some peace, safety and a small taste of a real family life. He hated what her real family life was like. As a child he had always wished that they could have adopted Bethany into his family. Away from her father and away from her witch of a mother. He honestly couldn’t decide which one of them was a worse parental figure.
“Thank you Mrs. West, but there is even better news.” Bethany smiled and glanced over at Pete.
“More news? What is it?” Mrs. West looked back and forth between her son and his best friend.
“Tell her Pete!” Bethany smiled gently at Pete, giving him the strength to allow Mr. Turner to re-enter his thoughts.
“It’s nothing; I got a part in the play too that’s all.” Pete shrugged it off; attempting to make his mother agree that it wasn’t a big deal.
“He got the male lead actually, so it is a big deal!”
“Oh Peter, I’m so proud of you! Congratulations sweet heart!” Mrs. West gave her son a great big hug. “Well, I guess this means I’m going to have to cook a huge dinner to celebrate then.” Mrs. West looked lovingly at both Pete and Bethany. “You two go and finish your homework. I’m going to the store to pick up some things for dinner.”
“Mom, the weather is horrible out there.” Pete was always worried about his mother and her driving. 4 years ago Mrs. West was in a terrible car accident. It was odd how she didn’t even fret at the thought of driving after being in a coma for 2 weeks from that wreck though.
“I’ll be fine honey. Now, you two march up stairs and finish your homework! I’ll be back shortly!” Mrs. West kissed both Pete and Bethany goodbye, grabbed her umbrella and ran out the back door to the black mini-van waiting in the driveway.
Bethany looked at Pete as he stared at the door his mother had just run out of. She knew that Pete was still worried about his mom; hell, she was still worried about Mrs. West.
“Pete, she’ll be ok.” Bethany gently placed her hand on his shoulder letting him know she was there for him.
“I know.” Pete smiled; thankful for his sensible friend. “So want to do homework or watch TV?”
“Cable?” Bethany loved watching cable at Pete’s house. Ever since her own cable was shut off she always made excuses to watch it at Pete’s.
“Of course, would I give you anything less?” Pete faked looking hurt and clutched at his heart dramatically.
“Nope, and that’s why I love you!” Bethany giddily hugged Pete, than ran off into the living room to find the remote. Pete stood there for a second, getting his grip on reality back. When Bethany hugged him something always shook inside; he never really understood why.
After an hour of watching cable Pete’s cell phone rang. ‘Baby got back’ echoed through out the living room.
“Hi mom, where are you?” Bethany giggled at the choice of ring tones for his mother.
“Oh honey, it’s going to be awhile till I get home. The storm is getting really bad and the power at the store went out.” Pete sighed in relief that his mother wasn’t going to chance it in this weather.
“Well, the power is still on here.” As if by magic, the lights and television shut off. “Scratch that, it WAS still on here.”
“CRAP!” Bethany screamed and ran towards Pete’s outline, clutching his tightly. Even since they were children Bethany hated storms.
“Stay safe okay? I’ll be home when the storm passes. Remember to keep Bethany close; you know how she hates these things.”
“Beth, it’s okay.” He pulled her close and sat back down on the couch. “I’ll keep her safe mom, don’t worry. Just be safe yourself, alright?”
“Always worrying about your old lady, huh? I’ll be fine sweetheart. I’ll talk to you when this all passes over. Love you, bye.”
“Crap, crap, crap, crap.” Bethany was still freaking out about the storm. Pete needed to get her mind off the rain, and quickly.
“Hey Beth, we do have some time before my mom gets home.” Pete stated as he gently petted her hair while she leaned against his chest.
“Yeah, and?” She mumbled quietly.
“Wanna get high?” Bethany leaned back and looked up at Pete’s face. He, of course, was smirking.
