4. Up the River

Talan’s phone was vibrating on the night stand next to his bed. He was watching television in his room with the light off. He reached over and slid it up.

“Hello?” He said into his phone.

Talan pulled his maroon Subaru into Lucas’ driveway. Lucas was sitting on the hood of his car flinging his keys around his finger. Talan parked and got out.

Talan got into the car and so did Lucas. They pulled out of the driveway and headed down the street.

About an hour later Lucas pulled the car off the road and down a dirt path.

“Where are we?” Talan asked.

He stopped the car. They got out.

“Follow me,” Lucas said grabbing Talan’s hand and leading him further down the path. There was a wooden table next to a large river.

“A river?” Talan asked.

“Yeah,” Lucas smiled. “I thought it would be really fun to come here with you. I’ve always wanted to bring someone I really liked. This is where I come to think when I’m really down or just want to lose myself in myself.”

“Really?” Talan said, “You’re really interesting. Who knew you had this cool place to come to.”

“I’ve never ran into anybody else here either,” Lucas said. “So I think of it as my private getaway. But I like you a lot. And, I wanted to share it with you.”

“After only two weeks?” Talan said, “You’re such a charmer.”

Lucas put his arms around Talan.

“I have to try hard,” Lucas smirked. “You are a college student while I’m only a lowly high school student.”

“Not too hard,” Talan said. “I’m barely a year older than you. So you aren’t that young.”

“And my future roommate,” Talan said. “I’m living with a junior next year.”

“Don’t go falling for him now,” Lucas said. “I hate rejection.”

“Now let’s go swimming,” Lucas said pulling his shirt off.

“I don’t have my trunks,” Talan said.

“Neither do I,” Lucas winked. “We can just swim in our shorts.”

“Okay,” Talan said pulling his shirt off. He took his phone out of his pocket and sat it down on the picnic table.

Lucas walked into the water.

Talan followed him in. The floor was rocky and sandy. They walked into the center, where it was waste deep and faced each other.

“K,” Talan said.

“You have to promise that too,” Lucas said. “If I’m gunna promise not to break your heart, then you have to promise not to break mine.”

“I promise,” Talan said.

“Good,” Lucas said. “Now I’m hungry.”

“Hungry?” Talan questioned, “Don’t you want me to…”

“Nah,” Lucas said. “Another time. Not just because I did it for you.”

“Okay,” Talan said.

He and Lucas walked out of the river and up to the picnic table.

“Where are we going to eat?” Talan asked, “And more importantly. What are we going to eat?”

“Hold on,” Lucas said walking to the car and pulling out a picnic basket.

“You made us a picnic?” Talan raised his eyebrow, “Seriously? A picnic?”

“You don’t think its super romantic?” Lucas said, “I made it earlier this morning.”

“Its super romantic,” Talan said. “I just didn’t know you were this romantic.”

“Well I can be,” Lucas said. “For the right person.”

“And I’m the right person?” Talan said.

“It’s possible,” Lucas laughed.

He began unloading the basket. There were sandwiches, chips, fruit, veggies, and sodas for each of them.

“Sit down,” Lucas said putting the basket on the ground. “Let’s eat some of this.”

Talan sat down. He picked up a sandwich and took a bite. Lucas had started with an apple.

“Good huh?” Lucas said.

“Very,” Talan said as he continued to eat…
