Smoke

Smoke
A War without End fiction by Setsuna-Jikan

Braced against a slab of concrete, I darted a look before leveling my gun and firing. I listened to the sounds of screams and rock shattering, but I couldn't tell if it was my shots or someone else's.

She was hunched over next to me, spitting curses along with dirt and blood. She pulled out a grenade, peered through the wall, and lobbed it, screaming "Firaga!" A joke. A stupid little joke that her side got and my side--what had been my side--found simply horrifying. For her it was a call back to an old game; for me it still meant death. Horrible, burning death. She had screamed that, the first time we fought. She wiped out half my squad in one blow, and riddled the rest of us with shrapnel.

My cheek ached with the memory, along with the isolated spots on my chest.

The concussion from the blast knocked us flatter; I jumped over her as debris and shrapnel pelted over the wall. Her hands were clinging to my coat, forcing my head down, protecting me as I protected her. Smoke rolled over and hid us, thick with the smell of burning asphalt and skin and death.

I choked, pressing my face into her shoulder.

Silence. There were a few groans, but they were silenced with fast bursts of bullets. Neither of us attempted to get up, to move, though I knew I'd have to let her go soon. She was our leader, she had to make the decisions on what to do with any prisoners, any supplies, any secrets...

But no one came for us, and I didn't want to let her go. She didn't say anything, just clung to me as tight as I was clinging to her.

I pulled back slightly, looked down at her. She looked back at me, her ice-blue eyes staring into my grey-blue ones. A cut was bleeding on her forehead, a burn mark near her eye. An ugly bruise was forming on her jaw and right cheek, and she was all there. She hadn't freaked this time, she stayed with me, near me. Helpless, I crushed my mouth against hers, kissing her deeply before pulling back.

"Sorry, Sir," I panted, licking my lips and tasting blood. "Shouldn't have done that. I'll let you up now." Moving awkwardly, I forced my limbs to listen to me, to get off her. She grabbed me, running thin hands over the scars, dirt, and stubble on my face into the dirty greasy mess that was my hair, knocking a light-brown chunk into my eye.

"Egan..." She whispered softly, just looking at me. When she pulled my head closer, I let her. "Don't apologize. Please." And we were kissing again, softer this time but it still hurt. I cradled her face gently, kissing her deeper when she let me, tasting blood, grit, and stale smoke...

"Shingaisha! Durihan! We need your help!" We didn't jerk apart at the call, but it was damn close. I stood up, licking my lips again as I offered her a hand. She rolled her eyes and heaved herself up, beads clacking in her green and red hair.

"We better get going," I told her calmly, looking over at the rest of the squad. She sighed and nodded.

"Right. Can't let the dumbasses blow themselves up." Despite the gruff and antagonizing tone, I knew she was serious. I followed her out from behind the pitiful shelter, shifting my mind back to where it should be. When she stopped suddenly, I shifted, confused.

"Sir?"

"Don't think I'm just going to drop this, Egan," she murmured, lips barely moving. I smiled and touched her shoulder.

"Of course not, Shingaisha. Now, sir, we really have to get moving." She snorted and complied, scrambling over the obstacle course of broken buildings and blacktop, shouting orders. I followed, like I always followed, feeling better.

The sick smell of burning flesh barely bothered me anymore.

AN: Watching BoB on tv AGAIN. Yay! I have no idea what sparked this one. I like Egan and Shingaisha, and for once I don't think anything spectacularly bad happens to them. Of course, now that I've said that one of them is going to die a horrific death. Thank you brain. But for right now, they're good.
