...once again...

“I just I am just a little upset” the voice said quivering.

“Lacee… this is you right.” Matt said

“Yea it’s me.”

“What’s wrong? Why are you so upset? Are you hurt?” matt said in a concerned voice.

“Well umm I’m sorry I shouldn’t have called… you have other things on your mind I am sure. I’ll let you go,” she said getting ready to hang up the phone.

“No please no don’t hang up. I could use to not think about my problems for a bit… sorry that sounded a bit mean didn’t it,” he said. She laughed lightly and told him it was not at all mean. It was very sweet.

She started talking to him about the events of her night, about how her and her husband Jim had gotten into a fight. He said she was cheating on him…he saw her with matt in the store. She told him it was just a grade school friend, but he just wouldn’t believe her. She had tried to tell him she loved him… tried to hug him and say sorry if he thought she was cheating on him. He wouldn’t listen he became irrationally angry and stormed out of the house.

She told matt she figured he was at a bar right now drinking away what little money they had. Then he would drive home, not wrecking if he was lucky, and try to snuggle up to her and tell her he was sorry for the events of the evening.

What she didn’t tell matt was that he wouldn’t only be saying sorry for yelling at her. He would be sorry for giving her a black eye. And she would have to accept his apology and act as if nothing had happened or it would be worse then before. She wanted to leave him… but she couldn’t. He would kill her, of that she was sure.

“Lacee you can always come over here if things get too bad. You know my house is always open for ya.” Matt said

“Thank you so much matt. Thank you for letting me gets this out. I really appreciate it. But I really need to go lay down. I need to be in bed when he gets home. It will be a lot easier to deal with it.”

“Alright lace be careful. And remember what I said…. Night” matt said getting ready to hang up the phone.

“I will I promise. Night matt, Be good!” Lacee said then hung up the phone. She walked to the restroom and looked into the mirror. Her eye had went from bright red and swollen to a purplish color. It was still a bit swollen.

She took off her shirt and pants and looked at herself once again. Bluish purple marks covering many places on her stomach legs, and back. He was smart enough not to leave marks on her where it would be visible. But tonight he had slipped. She looked at one on her left ribs, “you should know not to spill my beer you stupid bitch!” she whispered to herself remembering the words he had said to her.

She slowly slipped her satin nightgown over her head and walked into her dark bedroom. She lay down into her cold bed and tried to prepare herself for him waking her up. This had happened so many times she couldn’t count.

He would come in put his keys on the table stumble in to her, lie down, and shake her till she woke up. He would say he was so sorry while kissing her neck. He would start to make sexual passes at her. If she refused to receive him he would get furious and lash out at her, if he was even sober enough to be able to. She had learned to just take it. Close her eyes, act like she enjoyed it, and just take it. It was much better then the alternative.

Four years of marriage had taught her the ways of the world. She knew how things worked. She had married him right out of high school. She was now 22 and she had been with him and him only. At first it was good. She loved him, and he her. But then about a year into her marriage he got angry with her because she “embarrassed” him in front of his friends. He sure taught her a lesson he had said.

Matt sat down on the couch and looked over at Jeremy sitting in his chair.

“Who was that?” Jeremy asked.

“Lacee, she was upset. Her and her husband had a fight. She just wanted to talk…… I don’t like him.”

“Yea he seems like a real jackass.” Jeremy said to matt getting up from the chair and walking into the dirty kitchen. He opened the fridge and got a beer out. He looked at matt. Matt looked at him and put his hand out for it. Jeremy threw it at matt, matt cought it. Then Jeremy got another one out for himself, then closed the fridge. He leaned on the counter and looked at the TV. then the clock.

“wanna play a game of rummy?” he asked matt.

“Sure” matt said looking around for the playing cards. He found then in a drawer in the kitchen. Jeremy was already sitting in the living room with his beer on the coffee table. Matt walked in with the paper and deck of cards. He asked if Jeremy wanted to keep score and Jeremy said no unless matt wanted him to win on purpose.

Matt laughed lightly then dealt the cards. He didn’t pay much attention to the game at hand. He thought about Maria and how much he loved her and yet hated her at the same time. He missed her. The three of them used to play this together all the time. When Samantha Jeremy’s girlfriend was over they would play euchre. He loved those times… missed those times.

Then he though about Lacee, he wanted her here with him. He wanted to comfort her, to protect her. He had a horrible feeling about Jim her husband. He didn’t know quiet what it was. He was way to protective over her, and he had a feeling it was more. It pissed him off.

Needless to say he lost the game. He leaned back against the couch after the game was over.

“God matt you could have given me a challenge… I mean I got like 3 rummies in one hand. Your getting bad at this, and your not even drunk.” Jeremy said

“Shut up Jer.” Matt said taking a drink of his second beer. He closed his eyes and tilted his head up. Then he heard a knock on the door. His head snapped up and he starred at the door. His heart pounding… Maria… or Lacee he thought. Jeremy stood up and walked to the door.

He looked out the peephole and said “Sam.” Matt’s heart sank.

Jeremy opened the door and hugged the short woman. She was around five foot tall. She had died black hair and blue eyes. She was a petit girl. She wore a pink shirt and blue jeans.

Jeremy scooped her up into a big hug. Then kissed her. “Hey baby I am so glad you’re here.”

“Hey Sam, What’s going on” matt said once Jeremy had put her down and the door was closing.

“Hey Matt. How are you doing? I heard about you and Maria… sorry.” Sam said walking in and sitting on Jeremy’s Lap.

“ehh,” matt grunted. “I’m alright…cant do much about it I guess.” Matt said looking a bit more disappointed and depressed then before. Hating the fact this bothered him so much he slowly stood up and said “I think I’m gonna go lay down and watch TV.”

“Alright Matt night,” Samantha said.

“Night,” Jeremy said pulling Samantha into a kiss.

Sam giggled as his hand crept up her shirt. She grabbed his hand and whispered “Jeremy cant you wait 30 seconds you horn dog.”

Jeremy laughed as he kissed her neck earning him another giggle.
