chapter four
Alys laid Brandon’s body on the sand and pulled water out of her canteen. She placed a small drop into his mouth. She licked her chapped lips and Emily was running closer. “Alys.” He voice dry and cracked.
“Hush, don’t talk save your strength.”
“No, Alys you must tell Emily the truth… before it is to late.” Emily came running and was at his side.
“Brandon!”
“My Dear Emily… Please stay as sweet as you are now. Never let anyone change you. No matter the cost.” He coughed and the sisters flinched and they did not know what to do. “I am not going to live.”
“Don’t talk like that Brandon. We need you!” Emily cried to him.
“I know I am not going to survive this, I am an old man. I have outlived the laws of the Divine One. I am 5 years over due to death. Please stay together.” He coughed again and his eyes fluttered shut. Emily cried his name over and over again for a while. The tears running down her face, calling for him to wake up until she looked over at her twin who didn’t shed a tear.
“How can you be so cold?” She looked at her sister with tear stained cheeks. “Brandon is dead!”
“And it is his fault… the bastard.” Emily slapped her sister across the face.
“You are the bastard!” Alys stayed quiet. She just touched her cheek where her sister had slapped her. “When did you become so cold-hearted?”
“When Mom gave us up to the furnace.” She had said it. The secret kept for 15 years. Emily looked at her in shock.
“F…Furnace?”
“The smoke that you saw when you were at the satellite crash sight, that is the smoke of babies being burned alive. Population control. Mom gave up both of us to the furnace’s fiery mouth. Brandon took us in. he disobeyed the laws. Sooner or later he was going to be punished. Those are the rules. Now if you want to keep weeping over his dead body, be my guest but I am going to get revenge.” She wrapped her face in a cloth that was slightly burned by the fire. Only her eyes were seen. She jumped onto the sand runner and flew off in the direction of the two figures that had done this. Alys rode faster than the wind and came across two horses with riders. She slid in front of them scaring the horses. It was 2 men in uniform. The older one spoke.
“What are you doing out in the forbidden land?”
“I could ask you the same thing” she responded. She did not recognize her own voice. It was cold and evil sounding.
“We are here on business ordered by the Divine One.”
“To kill a man who broke one rule?”
“What do you know?” said the younger officer. Alys pulled out a knife she used for hunting and threw it into the older officer’s heart. She turned to the younger officer who looked in horror and drew his gun. She kicked it out of his hand, caught it, and pointed it at him.
“Send a message to your Divine One. The Sands are unforgiving to the crimes it sees he has committed. The Runner will be the deliverer of the price for the sins he passes off as laws.” She clicked the gun and off rode the officer with the older officer’s horse trailing his body.
Far from her sister to hear only the sands heard Alys collapse onto the sand, sobbing for the death of the one person other than her sister that understood her pain. The tears flowed freely. She waited until she had calmed down and then returned slowly to her sister. She came to the charred remains of the house and looked around but couldn’t find her sister.
“Emily?” She looked around. “Emily?” Her voice was in a panic. “EMILY!!!” Alys ran around the trees calling for her sister when she saw her. She had placed Brandon in a hole and buried him. She was praying. “Em… I”
“Don’t even. I know what you are going to say.”
“Really, then mind reader what was I going to say?”
“You are just going to say we can’t do anything about what happened now and we should go on with our lives.”
“Actually I was going to suggest a field trip to home.” Emily looked at her sister.
“ You must be joking. Because then you really do have no heart.”
“Em please. What I said was the truth. It was his fault he died. The reason that he was a bastard is because he knew he was going to be killed for it and didn’t bother to tell us. He told me to keep the reason we were out here in the middle of the desert with no one around from you. He wanted you to stay so pure and innocent but since I am a hard ass he told me straight forward who he really was.”
“What do you mean?”
“He was going to throw us in the furnace. That was his job. Hundreds of babies passed threw his hands into the furnace. The only reason he kept us alive was because I knew about the furnace behind where we stood the day we met him and the fact that we were to big. If we were brought a year before we would have been able to fit. We were too big for the children’s and to small for the old people.”
“Lies!”
“Believe that if you want or don’t but that is the truth.” Alys looked her sister in the eyes. “I am going to the city to find out what I can about this ‘Divine One’. You can stay and gather supplies if you want. I don’t think we both can go due to the laws we will be shot on sight together.” With the sand runner right beside her, Alys stood upon it and got ready to ride.
“Wait Alys.” Alys turned to her sister. “Be careful.” Alys smiled and waived at her sister.
“I’ll be back by sunrise or before that!” and with that she rode off to the city. She reached the city limits within a half hour. No one was in the streets. She slowed down and rode on the dirt path of a road. Something was not right. That was when something moved in an ally. “Hello?” it moved again and she moved closer. “Hello? I’m looking for information.”
“I know nothing. Nothing I tell you!!” it was a young man in clothes to small for him.
“Are you ok?” The young man kept repeating. ‘I know nothing,’ over and over again. She took a step closer. “I’m not going to hurt you.” He tuned to her. She removed the cloth from her face to show that she wasn’t going to hurt him.
“You are not from here.”
“That easy to tell?”
“Eyes… emotion… soul.”
“My eyes show emotion... Do they not show emotion here?
“No…Are sent by the ‘Divine One?”
“No. I am looking for information about him. I want to know about him. Can you tell me anything?”
“I can’t. I can’t”
“I understand. But can you tell me why no one is in the streets?”
“Danger”
“What danger?”
“The ‘Loyal Pure Ones’.”
“The what?”
“Them…” he pointed a shaky finger at a group of people that were all dressed in white robes. In a low voice the young man whispered. “If you are found in the streets with out a purpose by them… no good happens.”
Alys watched them walk past with glaring eyes. ‘They must have sent out the officers… Speak of the devil.” The young officer that she scared off ran to the ‘Loyal Pure Ones’ and bowed low and she heard her message repeated exactly to the LPO as she had said to him. The man that was beside her shrunk to the words that he heard and saw her smirk. He looked at her in confusion.
“Do you know of something?”
“Only if you tell me where I can find the Divine One.”
“He lives in the castle just 30 miles from the Slums outer housing.”
“Thank you,” She pulled up the sand runner and the man looked in awe. “You never saw me.” And with that she took the route to out of the city and to the desert again. Thirty miles on the Sand runner was a short ride that lasted a little under fifteen minutes. When she arrived it was dark and the city lights came on. She hid in the shadows avoiding the LPO. She ducked into another alley and was met face to face with a familiar yet strange face. Dressed in white robes, elder woman looked her in the eye. “Mother?”
