on the road again

CHAPTER FOUR: ON THE ROAD AGAIN.

I awoke in a carriage and it was slowing down. Why does this always happen… there was something different about this carriage. Why were there windows and a door and who the hell is holding me? I slowly looked up slightly so it seemed as if I were still knocked out. The setting sun shadowed the face of my captor.

“I see you are awake.”

“Samuel! What the hell?”

“I am setting you free.”

“How comes it feels like you are kidnapping me…”

“I am bringing you to an old home of my nanny as a place you can stay.”

“I have a home.”

“Where?”

“At the fields in your kingdom. I am a slave. I have been freed once before and I hated it. It is not my kind of life.”

“You mean you want that life? Never being able to rest when you want? Or get a real paying job? Or...”

“Why the hell do you care?” Samuel seemed taken back and looked at me with something in his eyes.

“Because no one should be a slave.”

“Then what about the other slaves? Why take me instead of the others?”

“I tried but they wanted to set you free… something about your tattoo.”

“Have you ever heard of the Goddess Linnia?”

“I have heard some of the slaves talk about her.”

“They believe I am the bringer of freedom to the slaves. My tattoo is that of a phoenix and,
according to legend that is the sign of the Goddess Linnia, the goddess of freedom.” Samuel was stunned. “You are staring again.”

“Oh! Err… sorry. Again.”

“It is fine.” They pulled up to a large castle but it was slightly smaller than the castle that the prince lived in. “So what now?”

“Well we’ll rest the horses and you can stay in one of the guest rooms.” The driver opened the door and held out his hand for her to take it. She jumped out.

“Thank you anyway.” Samuel got out behind me. I asked one of the butlers where my room was and thanked him. “What is your name?”

“My name is Henry. May I ask yours?”

“Shauni.”

“Well Lady Shauni your room is up the stairs and to the left.”

“I am a slave no formalities please.” I walked up the stairs and to the left. I found a large room with red curtains and sheets. I drew back the curtains and bathed in the moon’s light. I smiled.

“Hello Selena.” I knew that Samuel had come to my doorway but I ignored him and began humming. I then began to sing I heard sung so long ago. “Screaming Believing This is not how it was supposed to be Painful Regretful Why was it you and not me? Living in this battle zone Calling out your name Tuning out this dying moan Hoping this is just a game Screaming Believing This is not how it was supposed to be Painful Regretful Why was it you and not me? Help me find the reason why Please don’t leave me behind You just know how hard I try To this place my soul’s confined Screaming Believing This is not how it was supposed to be Painful Regretful Why was it you and not me? Screaming Believing This is not how it was supposed to be Painful Regretful Why was it you and not me, not me?” Samuel listened and the servants stopped to hear the voice singing to the moon. When I finished I looked up at the moon again. “Selena, what am I to do?”

The next morning I was up before the sun. I decided to check on the horses. When I arrived at the hill before the stables I saw smoke. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me and bursts open the doors. The crackle of the flames and the cries of the horses were deafening and the smoke was thick. I ran to the first horse and untied him. One by one I freed the horses but one wouldn’t leave. She had given birth and the cult wasn’t moving. I lifted her cult up and ran off to the exit. The smoke filled my lungs as I panted from carrying the cult and freeing the horses. When the horse ran out I followed soon after. Servants were trying to calm the horses. I saw Samuel and he ran to me.

“Are you ok?” my face was covered in soot and I was on my knees trying to find my breath. I shot him a look.

“Peachy.” He laughed and when I was able to I did too.

“Come, let’s get you cleaned up.” He helped me up and led me to the house.

The shower was needed. Years of dirt and pain seemed to wash away. My fingers gingerly danced across the scars that covered my body. The ones from my first whipping still were deep and noticeable. I turned off the shower and was met by a fluffy white towel. It was quite large and showed my entire back, scars and all.

“Shauni I…” Samuel stopped mid-sentence. He stared at my scars and I tried to cover them up. “Is that what they do to slaves?”

“Only those who disobey.”

“Did you?”

“I stole food for our villagers, took whipping for others, went against the guards, and running away.” I lied about that last one.

“You ran away? But you keep saying to bring you back.”

“It is a long story.”

“I have got time.” I told him that in the fields certain slaves were chosen and given a window of opportunity to be free. They would run and one hour later the guards would bring the dogs and hunt them. If you were found you were hung. I was one of the selected.

“But you aren’t dead.”

“I wasn’t caught. I got whipped for coming back. Apparently they don’t want dead slaves. I ‘fell of a cliff and became lunch for a wolf pack’.”

“So what happened after that?”

“I don’t want to talk about that.”

“Was it that horrible?”

“Like I said, I don’t want to talk about it.” I stood and walked over to the window. “How are the horses?” I asked to change the subject.

“They all made it out alive. Thanks to you.”

“When do you think you can bring me back?”

“You really are set on going to those fields aren’t you?”

“Like I said, I am a slave.”

“In the fields I saw you running to a house and you were crying. Why?”

“I was freed.”

“Were they tears of joy then?”

“No. My one food source and lively hood was just torn away from me.” Samuel looked at me.

“So what if I gave you a better life?”

“I don’t disserve it.”

“Why?”

“I am tainted...” He looked at me with sympathy. “I am not worthy of anyone’s sympathy.” And with
that I walked to the bathroom and dressed in my sooty clothes and walked out the door to what was left of the stable and checked on the horses. I climbed upon one’s powerful back. I grabbed a fist full of its long mane in my hands. “Take me away….” I whispered into its ear.

I don’t know how long I traveled or where I was. All I knew was that in the distance I heard Samuel’s voice calling me. For some reason it felt like my heart was being grabbed at and pulled back. I had to get away. I had to leave this place. The Horse seemed to read my thoughts and brought me to a cliff. It seemed like familiar scene. Then I thought back to when my mother told me of how her and my father met.
