“Alex, nice to see you come on in.”
Mr. Gordon led Alex into his office and took a seat. Alex had requested this meeting, so Mr. Gordon was curious to know what the reason for it was.
“So how has your first week here been?”
Alex smiled, a week already. It seemed like longer than that to him, but he guessed it was because of Lukas. After he had come out of his closet for him things had been a little different. Lukas talked to him a little more, but wouldn’t delve into a lot of his questions. And they had even managed to raise some of his class grades from F’s to D’s.
“Very good sir.”
Mr. Gordon looked pleased to hear that, but wanted to cut to the chase.
“So what is this all about Alex, I hope it’s nothing bad.”
Alex shook his head.
“No sir, I just wanted to request something of you.”
Mr. Gordon studied him but allowed him to continue.
“I was wondering if it would be too much trouble to give me the same classes as Luke for the rest of the year?”
Surprise danced in Mr. Gordon’s eyes but only for a moment. The man wasn’t easily shaken.
“Why do you want to do that?”
Alex went serious to explain.
“Well, he has some trouble taking notes, I think it’s because he’s getting some unwanted attention in his classes. I want to be able to see for myself the issue and hopefully stop it. He’s been working very hard with me sir to raise his grades, he wants to do better.”
Mr. Gordon thought a moment and sighed as he stood.
“Wait here and I’ll set up your schedule for you. We can talk more when I return I have some questions to ask you about Luke while we’re on the subject.”
Alex listened as Mr. Gordon gave the secretary the information she needed to reset his schedule before returning and closing his door.
“Now then, how has Luke been doing?”
Alex smiled.
“Well he’s been Luke sir. He’s been doing alright, I’m still trying to get him to walk the halls to his classes sir, but he’s so certain something bad will happen if he does.”
Mr. Gordon sighed, a small tinge of sadness in his voice.
“He’s been through so much Alex, I can understand his fear. What has he told you about himself?”
Alex stared out the window past Mr. Gordon, Luke has told him so little about himself.
“Well, he told me about his homosexuality. Or more like the student body did, he just agreed with them really. And he’s told me that his family had disowned him but he won’t tell me why, he just gets really quiet and changes the subject.”
Mr. Gordon nodded his approval.
“And what have you told him about yourself?”
Alex smiled.
“More than he’s shared with me. I told him about my brother and my other school. And some other, more happier things about my life.”
Mr. Gordon stood and walked to his door with a smile.
“Excellent. I’m so glad I’ve finally found someone who won’t persecute him for being the way he is. It sounds like you’re doing a wonderful job. Keep up the good work.”
He showed Alex out of his office. The secretary handed him his new schedule on his way out and he rushed to get to class and surprise Luke. He arrived just before the bell rang and spotted a shocked Lukas sitting near the back of the room by himself. He walked back and sat next to him as class started.
“What are you doing here?”
Alex only smiled and whispered back to Lukas.
“I got my classes changed, see.”
He handed the boy his new schedule as he read over it, a confused look on his face.
“Why?”
Alex took his paper back.
“Because you need the help, and I want to see what happens every day in your classes that you can’t always take notes.”
They quieted and paid attention then, Alex making sure Lukas took his notes and no one else disturbed him. Their next two classes passed without incident, but lunch was a different story.
“Lets eat outside, it’s nice out today Alex.”
Alex gave him this ‘you’re not tricking me’ look that silenced him. Alex was good at seeing through him, even when he was trying so hard to seem sincere. They stood in line silently and got their trays of food before sitting down alone to eat. Everything seemed to be going all right, but it didn’t last long. Lukas flinched as a cup of applesauce was thrown at his back and splattered all over his shirt.
“Hey faggot boy, how’s the date going?”
Alex stared at Lukas in surprise; he didn’t even try to defend himself. He just sat there, continuing to eat, as if he hadn’t just been threatened. Alex clenched his jaw, if Lukas wasn’t going to defend himself he would do it for him. Alex stood and repositioned himself to where he was seated facing Lukas’ tormentors, leaning back on his elbows on his table. He had pushed Lukas’ tray out of the way in the process so his arm rested in front of him on the table.
“It was going just fine until you spoiled it.”
His cold words stopped their laughter as one of the jocks stood up.
“Are you a little homo too?”
Alex laughed low in his throat, a more threatening sound that Lukas thought it should have been. He sat tensed, unmoving, if a fight broke out he wouldn’t be their target anymore, Alex would be.
“Did it take you that long to figure that out?”
Lukas nearly choked as he turned his head just slightly to look at Alex. He was so cold serious, a small smirk on his lips that made him look deadly. But it was his eyes that nearly killed Lukas; steal cold and heavy upon his tormentors. If a look could kill, the jocks would be dead.
“You’re a little fucking liar, you don’t even look like a faggot.”
Lukas wanted to hit him, pinch him, scratch him, anything to make him stop. Why was he doing that? Why was he lying to them? They were going to treat Alex the way they treated him just because he lied to them. Alex only shrugged at his words.
“Fine then, we’ll just be going.”
With that his hand went up to Lukas’ face, caressing his cheek and jaw ever so lightly, forcing him to face him. His fingers tightened at the back of his neck as he leaned in. Lukas closed his eyes as Alex’s warm lips touched his. It almost seemed sincere, even as he deepened the kiss and allowed Alex’s tongue to explore his mouth, it almost seemed like he meant it. Lukas was lost in wishful thinking, if only he meant it, he tasted so good. Their brief kiss was broken abruptly though, Alex hadn’t gotten lost like Lukas had. As soon as he heard a jock coming over the table at him he broke the kiss and kicked him hard in the stomach, sending the boy to the floor. He threw Lukas away from him, as a second jock came at him.
“Run Luke! Go to Mr. Gordon!”
Lukas was rooted to the spot as a fist hit Alex squarely in the jaw. Lukas’ own bruise was finally gone, just in time for Alex to earn one. Alex was on the ground on his back with another larger boy on top of him. His forearms were crossed over his head and chest, blocking some of the blows raining down upon him.
“Luke I said RUN!”
Lukas found his feet then as teachers were ripping past students to break up the fight, he ran as fast as he could from the scene. His legs didn’t let him stop until he reached Mr. Gordon’s office. He must have pushed himself because when he reached the secretary’s desk his legs collapsed under him and his breathing was too deep and fast for him to speak whole sentences. Mr. Gordon came out of his office, fear and worry clear on his face as he pulled Lukas to his feet.
“What happened, what’s wrong?”
Lukas’ chest was still heaving.
“Alex…fight…”
Mr. Gordon tightened his grip on Lukas’ shoulders.
“Where?”
“Meal hall.”
With that he released Lukas who had luckily found his feet again. As he rushed out he shouted orders to his secretary.
“Lock Lukas in my office and give him something to drink. Don’t let anyone in or out until I get back.”
The woman obliged, ushering Lukas into his office.
“I’ll be right back with something for you to drink sweetie, just rest here and catch your breath.”
Lukas listened as she locked the door behind her and he collapsed onto Mr. Gordon’s couch. She was gone for only a moment before she came back with a Dixie cup and water.
“We don’t have any real cups, but I hope this will do.”
Lukas nodded to her and thanked her. She stopped before leaving though and blinked at him.
“You have applesauce on you.”
Lukas had almost forgotten about that, what a mess that would have been on Mr. Gordon’s couch.
“Sorry, I forgot about that.”
She smiled to him.
“Don’t move, I’ll be right back with a clean shirt for you and a bag to put yours in.”
He thanked her again as she left him. He gazed out the window, watching the students leave the meal hall and head to their classes. The secretary returned with a shirt for him.
“I hope this fits you alright.”
She handed it to him. It was a simple white T-shirt with the school logo on it. It was large enough, but was short sleeved and wouldn’t hide the scars on his arms. He would have to make due and hope that Alex didn’t see him before he could change again.
“Thank you it’s fine.”
She smiled and left him for good. He quickly changed, not wanting Mr. Gordon to walk in on him and see the scars he knew were there. He hated them; they were wide pale scars that would remind him forever that he was different. Even if Mr. Gordon knew about them he still hated for people to see them. He slipped on the clean shirt and placed his in the bag she had given him for it before sitting down on Mr. Gordon’s couch again. It wasn’t long before Mr. Gordon returned. He only unlocked his office door to peak his head inside.
“Are you alright Luke?”
He nodded.
“Yeah they didn’t hit me.”
Mr. Gordon sighed in relief.
“That’s good. If you want to come with me, Alex is in the infirmary.”
Fear must have crossed Lukas’ face because Mr. Gordon was quick to reassure him.
“He’s just being looked over, nothing serious. His cheek is going to have a nice bruise on it and so are his arms but nothing worse than that.”
Mr. Gordon blinked at him as he noticed he looked different.
“Did you change clothes?”
Lukas nodded.
“I had to change my shirt it had applesauce on it.”
He furrowed his brow at his exposed arms and the hundreds of delicate scars for all to see.
“Do you want to stop by the dorm and change before we see Alex?”
Lukas had wanted to, everything inside him told him to hide his scars from Alex, but for some reason he felt that it was alright for him to know. He shook his head.
“It’s alright, I want to see him.”
Mr. Gordon nodded and led him out of the office and to the infirmary. Alex wasn’t asleep or badly hurt like Mr. Gordon had said, but Lukas was still worried. He was in the infirmary because of him, he felt like he had been the one who beat him.
“Hey Luke, good to see you’re alright.”
Lukas smiled and shook his head at him.
“Can’t say the same for you.”
Alex blinked at him and raised his forearms. They were black and blue, scratched, welted, even bleeding in some places.
“Eh, it’s not so bad.”
He lifted his shirt to show Lukas his chest. It was only slightly bruised.
“At least they didn’t get to my chest or else I’d be in big trouble.”
Lukas laughed and sat down on the bed next to him. Mr. Gordon took that as his leave, walking out of the room to let them talk. Alex’s gaze rested on Lukas’ bare arms.
“You changed your shirt.”
Lukas nodded and tried to hide his arms but Alex was too quick for him. He grabbed his wrist and forced him to let him look at the scars he tried to hide. Lukas watched him as his eyes ran over his past. His lips were thin and his eyes soft but stern. He wondered if Alex was angry.
“When did this happen?”
Lukas couldn’t look at him as he spoke; instead he talked to the floor.
“It was before I came here, when I was depressed.”
Alex ran his fingers over the marks lightly, sending goose bumps over Lukas’ skin and up his arm.
“Did someone do this to you?”
Lukas shook his head.
“You did this to yourself?”
He didn’t answer, but Alex knew what it was he couldn’t say. They were quiet for a moment until Lukas couldn’t take it anymore.
“Why did you kiss me?”
Alex smiled evilly at him.
“Hey they didn’t hit you did they. They hit me.”
Lukas stood, anger rising in him.
“And that’s a success to you?”
“I’m trying to keep you safe, if they’re angry with me more than you they aren’t going to target you anymore.”
“No they won’t, they’ll target you!”
Alex quieted as Lukas’ anger boiled. He was standing now, facing Alex as he sat on the bed.
“I don’t want you to keep me safe by using yourself as a human shield. I don’t want you to save me by sacrificing yourself.”
Alex, for the first time, dropped his gaze. He understood why Lukas was pushing him away. He had gone about the situation wrong.
“And that kiss was a stupid idea.”
Alex laughed.
“Whatever you liked it.”
Lukas blushed a deep red and turned around, his back facing Alex as he laughed.
“I did not, I don’t like straight boys.”
Lukas caught a pillow to the back of the head and whipped around to see Alex rolling.
“I think you still liked it.”
Lukas clenched his jaw and crossed his arms.
“Whatever.”
Alex stood and threw the pillow back up on the bed.
“It’s almost time for seventh hour to start, let’s get to class before the bell rings.”
The boys left the room and gathered Mr. Gordon on their way out.
“You sure you’re alright Alex?”
He nodded.
“Yes sir, I’m fine. We’ll be off to class now.”
Alex started to pull Lukas away with him as Mr. Gordon stopped them again.
“Lukas, you might want this.”
He tossed him a dark long sleeved shirt that he hurriedly pulled over his white one.
“Thanks Mr. Gordon.”
The boys practically ran to their last hour and made it just as the bell was ringing. They took their seats and set to their work, they had enough make up work to do that night.
