Chapter 3
Grown-Up Christmas List
My legs were frozen, almost to the point of numbness as I walked back, my pace slow and even. I looked down at the ground as I walked, already missing the snow and trees. I was too bust admiring the nature around me, that I didn't hear the soft crunching of snow behind me until it was too late.
“Let me go!” I swatted at the arms around my waist, hearing a deep chuckle next to my ear.
“Do I have to? You're my first catch of the day...” I rolled my eyes, laughed softly. The arms around my waist loosened and I turned around to see the smiling face of Charlie, one of my 'close' neighbors. He leaned down slightly, giving me a soft kiss.
“How are you, chicklet?” I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck and pressing closer against the warmth his body was providing.
“A hell of a lot better now, thanks to you.” he grinned. And tightened his arms around me.
“Family's that bad?” I rolled my eyes.
“I believe, sir, that you have just made the understatement of the century.” he gave me a sympathetic look.
“So, how long did it take this year before Sister cracked?”
“The third day. Shortest time yet. She accused me of being jealous of her because she's married to a man with no backbone and that I vent my jealousy into anger towards her.” Charlie looked at me in amusement.
“Three days?” I nodded. “Wow. Is her memory bad, too, or can't she remember your childhood?” I shrugged.
“I don't think she can or wants to. She wants to create a new explanation for everything, you know.” he rolled his eyes and pressed impossibly closer, one hand coming up to take one of my headphones and put it in his ear. He smiled as he recognized the song. I smiled softly, closing my eyes as he started singing along into my ear softly.
“We'll do it all. Everything. On our own.” his breath teased my skin softly. “We don't need, anything. Or anyone.” his hands delved into my back pockets, bringing me closer still.
“If I lay here. If I just lay here, would you like with me and just forget the world? I don't quiet know, how to say, how I feel. Those three words are said too much. They're not enough.” I felt his lips curl into a smile softly. I pulled back slightly and started into his dark green eyes. He smiled softly and kissed me as snow began to fall again, coating the world in another layer of whiteness.
My fingers twisted with the hair at the nape of his neck. He kissed me softly again before pulling back.
“Should I walk you home, my lady?” I smiled.
“Why, thank you, kind sir.” his arm around my waist never loosened as he walked me back home, daring to kiss me once more outside the back door. I sighed and looked down.
“I don't want to go back in there.”
“Explain to me again why they come here every year?”
“Because I'm the only one in the family with a house big enough for them to stay in. All of them.” Charlie sighed.
“I'm sorry, chicklet.” I shook my head.
“Don't be. This is their present to me so I just have to deal with it.” he smiled sadly.
“You shouldn't have to deal with it if you don't want to.”
“Charlie, I'm the middle child. Number three. I have no say over anything in my family. And if housing them for two weeks a year means that they leave me alone the other three hundred sixty one days of the year, then fine.” he sighed again and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. He opened the back door and gently nudged me inside the warm house.
“Well, I hope they behave this year.” I smiled softly.
“Me, too.” he closed the door and I watched him through the small window as he walked away, towards the hidden path and disappeared. I sighed and turned around, toeing off my boots and looked at the kitchen. It looked like Mother gave up on the pudding and just left the bowl there. I sighed and walked over to it, mixing it a few times more before pouring it into a new bowl and placing it in the fridge. I left the kitchen and walked pass the living room.
Boyfriends and Boy/Girlfriend were all laughing and talking happily. I walked up the stairs, hearing everyone else in their rooms laughing and talking happily. I reached my room greatfully, slipped in side quietly and locked the door behind me.
I leaned against the door heavily. Why couldn't my family be normal?
