Chapter Eight

Later

Rowan was sitting alone, her notebook resting in front of her. Cat and Tristan had just left to talk. She had ordered a coke. Then she saw him. He was walking towards her purposefully. She sighed looking down at the notebook she had sitting in front of her.

When she looked back up his eyes met hers. “Hey, angel,” he smiled straddling the chair in front of her. She looked back at the notebook. Pouting, he slid into the seat in front of her. “Don’t I even get a hello?”

“Nope.”

“That’s cold.”

“Go away, I’m trying to study.”

“I wanted to talk to you.”

“Talk?”

“I want to be with you.”

“That’s nice. I want a first edition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. What’s your point?”

Garret sighed. “You know what I feel, you know what you feel. Why won’t you be with me?” He reached out and took her hand in his rubbing the soft skin gently and staring at her hands with something akin to adoration.

“I don’t want to hurt Jesse.”

He rolled his eyes heavenward but didn’t let go of her hand. “Damn it, Rowan! Aren’t you already hurting him?”

“I-”

“Set him free, sweetheart. It’ll save both of you a lot of grief.” He then simply kissed her hand and walked off. She growled under her breath suddenly having a very strong urge to hurt him.

The next day

“Rowan!” Cat called as Rowan came in from the bathroom after taking a shower.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“This is for you,” Cherish said tossing Rowan something. It was something wrapped in brown paper. Rowan frowned opening the paper. Inside rested an old book. she looked at the spine and gasped. “What is it?”

“I don’t believe this,” she murmured.

“Believe what?” Cat asked. The pages were yellowed with age but other than that it was in impeccable condition.

“How did he find it?” Rowan breathed looking the book over in awe.

“Who found what?” Cherish demanded crossing her arms. Rowan blinked looking at her friend.

“Oh, sorry,” she said. “It’s a copy of Dracula.”

“You have one,” Cat said nonplussed.

“Not like this,” she murmured. She opened the book. Inside was a card, which simply said: ‘there are ways to get what you want, angel, and I never give up.’

“Who gave it to you?” Cat asked.

“I... don’t know,” she lied.

“You said he,” Cherish pointed out.

Rowan almost winced. “I assume,” she shrugged with indifference she didn’t feel. “What girl would spend this much on me?”

“Good point,” Cat nodded. She looked down at the book shaking her head lightly. /Why had he done this?/

A week later

“Got everything?” Cat asked helping Rowan load her last bag into Nova’s car.

“I think so,” she said. “I’m going to miss you guys.” She hugged Cat, then Cherish.

“I’ll see you after break,” Cherish said shutting the trunk to her convertible. Nova shut her door after loading her own bags.

“Ready?” she asked twirling her keys idly.

“Yeah,” Rowan nodded walking to the passenger side and opening the door.

“Rach,” Cat said suddenly. “Be careful.”

She smiled, perplexed. “Always.” She and Nova got into the car. “Thanks for the ride.”

“Hey, it’s not a problem,” Nova said starting the car and pulling out. “Get some sleep, you can take over later tonight.” Rowan laid her head on the window and slowly dozed off.

Dream sequence

“Rowan.” Rowan opened her eyes to find herself face-to-face with Garret.

“Hi,” she murmured groggily.

“This must be your dream.”

“Why?”

“Well, if it were mine-” Suddenly we were on the big bed with the satin sheets again. Garret wasn’t wearing a shirt and she was completely naked. She could feel his hot breath on her neck as he kissed his way down her neck and towards-

“Stop that!”

He blinked obviously startled. “Um, sorry.” They were still on the bed and he still wasn’t wearing a shirt but now at least she was wearing clothing. “So, what’s on your mind?”

“On my mind?”

“Obviously something is. What’s wrong?”

“Wrong?”

“Okay, my little parrot, just answer the question, please.”

“Nothing’s wrong.”

“Lying to me in the dreams. Now that’s sad. If you can’t talk to me, whom can you talk to?”

She frowned. “Pretty much anyone.”

“That’s cold.” She glared at him. He merely smiled stretching out on the bed. His chest was finely muscled with only a little hair sprinkled across it. “Someone’s calling you. I’m close if you need me.”

She snorted. “Fat chance.”

The real world

Rowan awoke seeing Nova’s worried face. “You are a hard vamp to wake up,” she commented.

“Why can’t I move?”

“You’re tied up.”

“And you?”

“Enchanted handcuffs.”

“Who did this?”

“I’m not sure.”

Rowan sighed stretching the rope and not finding it give at all. “Okay, so what exactly happened?”

“The brakes to the car went out first. Then I lost control of the steering. The car itself actually brought us here.”

Rowan struggled with the rope some more. “Did you see anything useful?”

“No, we’re in the woods, I know that. They also said something about a sacrifice.”

“Well, we aren’t exactly human.”

“Actually,” Nova said slowly. “It’s a virgin sacrifice.”

Rowan laughed, she had to; the whole thing was completely ridiculous. “Yes, of course it is.”

“We need help. I can’t use my magic with these on.”

/Call if you need me./

“Nope, not happening.”

“Rae?”

“Um, sorry.”

“We’re going to die here... well, you are.”

“Thanks, Nova.”

“Sorry, I’m just nervous.”

“I can understand that.” /I will not call Garret. I will not call Garret./

/You rang?/
