Four

They spent about an hour comparing the computer reports and reservation cards, it looked as if it was going to be a very good show, and the park was almost sold out for the weekend. All the business talk had taken both Kerry and Grant's attention away from each other. They sat next to each other at the poolside umbrella table, mulling over papers and books, never once remembering that the other was hardly clothed. It was a true business meeting.

It was only after they had all the paperwork figured out and taken care of, that they both remembered the setting, which they were in.

Grant leaned back in his chair "It looks as if Kerry did a good job breaking you in, I don't really see where you need a crash course in running this place at all. It must be that psychic link I've heard so much about between twins."

Kerry shot him a nasty look "Oh please! That is such a bunch of junk! If it weren't for plain old gossip and bitch sessions, neither one of us would know a thing about what the other was up to."

This comment caught Grant's attention, and Kerry saw the recognition in his eyes "So, how much do you two gossip and bitch to each other? I'd imagine being sisters as well as twins you tell each other everything."

Kerry knew immediately that Grant was fishing. She could hear just the tiniest waver in his voice; try as he might to sound ordinary and everyday.

“Oh, you know,” Kerry began, “I guess it’s the usual amount of griping. Frustration at work, frustration at home, too much stuff to do, and not enough time to do it at either place! This thing broke or isn’t working, that thing just completely died and we don’t know why. The dreaded but inevitable phone call to a repair shop.” Kerry ticked off as many mundane, daily happenings as she could think of, wanting to lull Grant into a false sense of security. It seemed to be working as his body posture relaxed further into the chair. He brought his hands up and lacing his fingers together, placed them behind his head. One foot came up to rest on the base of the table, and he began to tilt back in his chair.

Nodding in agreement he spoke, “yea, I imagine it’s tough. Do you live alone or do either of you have roommates?” The conversation was taking a decidedly routine turn, Kerry decided she’d try and skid it out of control.

“`Kerry´ and I both live alone” she began, “we like not having to share space with others, but we also agree that sometimes it’s nice to have a man around the house. I guess if you had to divide our bitching up into percentages, the majority of the time we’re complaining about or comparing guys.”

Grant’s face just about lost all color while he simultaneously lost his balance on the two chair legs. He flailed his arms around in circles, like Pete Townsend doing a warm up, trying to save himself. It was no good, as if in slow motion Grant felt himself falling backward. Kerry saw him falling too and in her mind’s eye she could also see the puddle of blood that would seep from under Grant’s head when he hit the concrete pool deck.
