The Battle
Sitting in clovers we watched the sky, the clouds form and embrace, the birds chirp and sing a song of love, just for us so it seemed, and yet we were troubled, how could we explain this night, how can we go to my brother and tell him of our glorious news? Would he accept it better now that we were with child? Or would this be another reason for him to doom us? I clutched the amulet around my neck, the same one that mother had given to me as a child…
“Guard it well sweet baby, and you will never have to live without me.”
A sweet and loving inscription laid in silver on the back of my precious jewel. Oh mother how I needed you now, I needed some words of comfort to go forth to my brother and tell him, I needed more strength than my lover could provide. A sound like a clap of thunder turned my eyes upward, and I knew without barely a glance who it was soaring above us.
“My dearest, run, till Crystalla flying overhead, that means that my dear brother knows where we are and by the powers im sure that he knows of the news that we bring.”
I turned then to face my lover and saw only the patch where he had once lain.
“No, not like this brother, you can not have him, I will not let you take him, I know tis you that has called him to your side and I know that you will hide him from me, return him here for face me yourself, are you so coward as to take him when I cannot see? Face me now and show me that you are as powerful as you claim…..I COMMAND YOU SHOW YOURSELF!”
I staked my staff into the earth, to show a challenge, a mark that many great one’s can recognize, to call one out and force your great weapon in the earth herself, shows great aptitude and boldness, not many would dare this feat, not around my brothers that is, but I had a great and worthy purpose, he knew now that I meant business….
“How dare you! “ a booming voice from the skys called out to me,
“How dare you speak to me in such a manor, even you sweet sister know the laws and ways of us siblings you know better than to call each other out, you know that wrath that we all endure and you know what father would say. You feel this is a worthy fight? Coward is it? Allow me to show you just how coward I am sweet one.”
A flash of lighting struck the tree beyond my head, the patch of clovers where our child was conceived now lay ablaze with the might and force of his great majics, like a blew Zane stood before me staff in hand ready for battle.
“Is this how you want it sweet sister? Is this what you have been waiting for? A battle of wits, do not think that I wont strike you down where you stand, you havent got a chance dear one, don’t stand there as if you have the power to defeat me, don’t stand there with the intent to harm in your soul, your black heart, you know what you have done with my warrior was not to be done, you know that soul that you carry within your womb may belong to you and he, but can never be brought in this world, you are of noble birth, he a creation that I myself made to better my army and yet you still go and do that which I bid you not, you were spoiled as a child and you are spoiled now, and I dare say young one it is time to put you in your place…..”
Crash of lightning, clap of thunder, all the great feats of my darling brother Zane, spells at the ready, fire balls being thrown, the winds called and the earth all a flutter. Trees seemed to bow and try to climb away from the fate that lay before them, the song bird vanished and cried as they soared away to safety. Miles away stones could be heard crashing to the ground, waters crashed into nearby shores, every creature of the magical nature’s blood ran cold, senses flared and bodies tingled, now was the time when most people would flee in fear of their lives, but not we, a fight till the end was customary in our family, a duel was called and now was the time to finish it. He came in for a fatal strike and all went black, a bright light was the last that I recall, my brothers face twisted in anger and pain, a look of knowing what must be done and yet knowing in his heart that this cannot come to pass…..yet silence and night filled my eyes and head…….
I awoke with many a lady in waiting at my bedside, face peering over me, so many faces coming in and out of this place, I didn’t recognize, I called out to my father, and heard no reply, I called out to my brother and the same silence filled my ears, I cried like a child knowing that she was all alone but the any faces that didn’t spark a memory, a scuffled sound of padded sandals filled my ears, a voice of a child came to my ears….
“Daddy tis that you?”
“Yes my sweet baby, im here, are you well? “
“No father, I cannot feel my legs, father what has happened to me?”
“How many times little one have we told you not to play around the organ? How many times have we told you that going behind this creation would only lead to hurt and sorrow and yet you still did not head our warning?”
“Father, Brother, I cannot feel my legs, tell me what am I do?”
A flash of myself going beyond the safety of the minstrel lady gently stroking the keys on the organ, her sing song voice in my ears, a sweet song of lovers and happiness, a stern warning not to travel beyond the legs of this sweet voiced siren, I never did listen to my father nor my brother, always too adventurous, always willing to get into trouble at a moments notice and now I had to pay the price…..crawling beyond the point I could hear the song she played more loudly, I could hear the sweet cords strike and the melody of her voice play louder in my head, I gazed above me at the great metal pillars, watching them go up an down with every different key that was struck, and then it was too late, I saw the pillar above my head coming down, I tried to get out of the way, but I was too late, the pillar came and struck me in the back on my escape out, I lay there twitching and crying out to my father, the organ stopped, I heard a scream of my name and people scurrying about to find me, I tried to call out to tell them where I was and wiggled to get out from underneath my capture.
“Here, mistress, she is here, beyond the organ, fetch her father and brother, the lady of the house is in dire need of attention.!”
All went black, I could feel my arms being pulled, a sweet voice telling me all was well, a few more moments and safety will prevail….
“I cannot feel my legs father, what am I to do?”
A moment later my brother’s, Zane and Mic, and my father circled me, clasping hands around my broken small body, a chant in a voice and language I couldn’t understand escape their lips, a circle of light in colors of blue, yellow and white surrounded me, the chant continued and my body started to lift upwards, my arms extended, I felt weight less, I could feel all the senses in my body tingle, the pain that I felt in my body started to ease, and my toes began to tingle, I slowly drifted back to the ground and eased back onto the bed that I lay in only moments before my family came to me….
“Dearest wake up, are you well?”
I stirred knowing the voice yet not seeing the face, my body ached from head to toe, but that’s what you get when you battle one of the most powerful wizards in all the land. I opened my eyes to see my beloved towering over me, Katherine was over by the window watching, looking as if she was waiting for something or someone.
“How is it that I came here? All I remember was a flash of light and now hearing your sweet voice my love?”
“Just take a wild guess who might have come and rescue you young one?”
With just those few words, I knew who it was, only one person in all the land would call me that and live to see the next day. It was my beloved father standing just inside the door way.
“I should have known better father yes, who else would have the power and ability to stop a battle between my brother and I?”
“My dearest Sethraie, don’t try to cover this all up, I have spoken with Nikktalia here and I know what has been going on, I know good well what the battle tween the two of you was about and I made sure that it was ended just so.”
My blood ran cold, I know that my love would never betray me, but when father asked you a question you answered it or faced a great price, I clutched my belly and stared with hopeful eyes that my father would understand and know what I was feeling and what I was thinking at that time.
“Clam your head dear one, im not here to harm any of you, and I would never harm a woman of your condition, you know me fare better than that dear daughter, though I am a folrgving one, your borther im afraid is not, you know well his warning of involving yourself with one of his army, you knew what would happen were he to find out and here you sit in the hospice room, lain with child and still you fought him, what was going through that pretty little head of yours?”
I knew I need not speak, one of my fathers many talents was to tell when a person was lieing and what was the thoughts in their head, a talent that when I was a child was useful and got me into plenty of trouble at the same time. He gave me the look of a scornful nature and one of a loving father, I knew that were it not for my father I would not be here in this bed, that my belly swollen with pride and child would never come to pass at this time, I greeted his smile with one of my own and waited to hear the judgment that was come to pass.
“I know of your plans to wed this warrior and I also know that your brothers will not allow it be, you are a woman of the highest stature, and he a mere warrior not even a nobleman, but I know when my daughters heart is set and I am not one to try to change that, I bid you well on your choice and know that no matter what happens I am only a spell away.”
With that he was gone, a shimmer of light and a little dust, though only for affect of onlookers, was all the trail that he left behind, the scariest thing that I had to endure now was my brothers.
“Guard it well sweet baby, and you will never have to live without me.”
A sweet and loving inscription laid in silver on the back of my precious jewel.
