chapter 3

To my fans...or fan. Sorry I'm taking so long to add chapters. My days and nights have been very busy.

Maria woke up the next morning, pulled on the same clothes she wore the day before, and snuck a peek at her watch. 8:47. She ran a brush through her hair, and was at the breakfast table in no time. Grandma took one look at her, and asked, "Didn't you bring any clothes with you?"
"What's the point in changing your clothes if you've yet to shower?"
"Good point. Shower and change after breakfast. And brush your teeth. I don't want your parents thinking I let you run around dirty all summer."
Maria looked out the window to see her grandpa pulling a hose across the grass. "Is Sara coming today?"
"She could be. This isn't her job, you know. She comes and goes as she pleases. But she usually comes every day. She likes to help feed the horses."
Maria finished her toast and orange juice, and jumped from the table. "I'm off to shower before Sara gets here."
"Is it really that exciting around here with Sara? Last year, you didn't get your ass out of bed until noon."
In the shower, Maria washed her hair and listened for any knocks on the bathroom door. After shaving, she dryed off, wrapped a towel around her head, and put on new clothes. She then opened the bathroom door to find her grandma in the hallway, cleaning a window. "Is Sara here yet?"
"Yes, but remember to give her some air, girl. You've got to me annoying, hanging around her all the time." Maria took off down the hall, down the stairs, slipped on her shoes, and ran out the back door.
Grandpa was there, starting a ride on mower.
"Nice towel."
"Is Sara around?"
"She's changing some light bulbs in the barn." Sara didn't want to seem as excited as she was, so she calmly walked to the barn, and through the doors.
"Sara?" She looked to her left, and saw Sara on a ladder, a package of light bulbs at her feet, arms in the hair, twisting a new bulb in.
"Yes?"
"Whatcha doing?"
"Sheering sheep." The bulb lit up, and Sara climbed down. She looked at Maria, and busted up laughing. "Nice towel."
"Thank you. I've got to say, you've no idea how glad I am you'll be hanging around here. I was the only kid around all summer before, you know." Sara nodded.
"Why do you think I hang around all day, helping two old people? It's boring around here." She winked, then sat on the lowest rung of the ladder. Maria walked closer, then leaned up against the wall.
"So, do you read?"
"Oh, yes. My favorite is the Scarlet Pimpernel."
"Is that a joke?"
"Not at all."
"I read newer books. Like Harry Potter."
Sara sneered. "Is that a joke?"
"No, it isn't."
"You look like you're joking, with that towel on your head." She stood up, and unwrapped the towel. Maria didn't fight her, of course. Sara sat on the barn floor, with the towel in her lap. Maria slid down the wall, sitting in front of her. She took this time to stare at Sara's chest. Not too bad.
