When BLake arrived at work she was early enough to have a cigarette and change without a rush. She sat on the balcony, smoke floated up from her lips and was whipped away from her face by a sharp breeze. She thought of Whimsy and tried hard to let it make her smile instead of frown. She told herself that she could make it better if she just thought, ‘at least if she’s not real she can’t really leave you.’ The thought brought a smile to her lips but not to her eyes. She finished her cigarette, threw the butt down, and crushed it under the toe of her shoe. She walked back inside with a smile on her face, but not a real one.

She rushed into room 311 at twenty ‘till five. The people that were there waiting for her to show up brought their fingers to their lips in protest of noise. One of them came over and whispered into her ear, “she’s sleeping”. Blake nodded and went to sit down on the chair at the other side of the room.
The help gave her a list before they left, it applied only to the next twenty-four hours. The first note was that she was not to wake the patient at any point unless absolutely necessary. The second one said that she would need to introduce herself to the girl. The third was her name; Hope Ashland. The fourth was to feed her when she woke up, and to get her lots of water. The fifth, not to be surprised if she cried out in her sleep.

Blake was confused at this last one, she would have figured they would want her checking her if she were crying out. No, the paper had said not to be surprised, she would check on her. Blake sat and considered her options now. She would sit here as a sort of watch until Hope woke up, and when she did, she would check up on her and feed her. She decided that she would also attempt conversation to keep them both occupied.

Hope was behind a curtain when Blake walked into the room, she thought that moving it might wake her, so she would wait until she woke to move it. She got curious fast as to how Hope looked, but that didn’t make her take a chance in waking the girl up. Blake sat tight for about an hour, she found a book to read and waited patiently to find out about this mystery girl. Then Blake heard her name called, she went rigid. What she had heard was a soft high-pitched whisper. “Blake.” It was louder that time, “Blake!”, the voice sounded worried and had gotten louder again, Blake thought it was Hope.
Blake went to the curtain, hesitantly because she still wasn’t sure she had heard it. But then there it was again, “Blake!”, that time it was loud, she was afraid not to see what was going on. The pulled back the curtains to find herself staring at a pile of lumped up covers. There was someone under there, but they were sleeping soundly. Blake shook herself and went back to her chair. She must have been hearing things, it wasn’t like sleeping people to shout. The help had said she was prone to it though, but then why her name. That’s what she must have been hearing, Hope was not calling her name, the help said the girl didn’t know who she was. Blake couldn’t stop thinking that there just might be a chance that the girl was calling to her. For a moment she considered going back and checking again and then she realized what was going on.

Blake almost yelled at herself out loud. How could she for one moment try something so hurtful to herself and others as making Whimsy real? How could she think for a moment that it was okay to make such a mistake at the expense of another persons well being? Blake was on the verge of break down again when she realized that the calling had started up again. It wasn’t ‘Blake’ this time, it was just a cry. Just a sobbing noise, but Blake couldn’t honestly ignore it for any amount of time. She rushed back into the room. She rushed over to the curtain and drew it open.
What Blake saw then almost made her faint. That and at the same time she started to cry and smile uncontrollably. A small blonde girl lay there, propped up against the pillows, tears rolling down her cheeks. A face with what Blake imagined was a mirror image of the surprise on her own face, plastered across it. The girl emitted a surprised squeak and then whispered in awe, “Blake…”, she girl proceeded to reach out to her.

In this very same instant Blake found her breath and nearly couldn’t find her words as she reached out to embrace the other girl. “Whimsy!”.

“I missed you”, the small girl whispered in her ear as Blake held her close.

“I love you”, Blake murmured in to Whimsy’s ear. The sentiment was returned with a kiss. And as the two embraced, both realized that in the most literal way, their dreams had come to life.

- Even love shall one day pale, but hope will find you even in your darkest hour.-
