“Man, your ass got huge.” Bliss shuddered and wished this had not been the way she would have greeted her ex-lover and cousin. She did not intend to be in a store, buying a pack of condoms that tasted of chocolate, to go with the edible panties, the massage oil, and other eccentricities that would be perfect as gifts for Rhapsody. Could she afford it, of course not, but Shai and Kyoei had been kind enough to let her embarrass her friend and given her the money she would need.
“Hello Link,” Bliss said, afraid to turn to even face him. She did not want to look into those blue eyes of his, what would she see? She held her breath and hoped he would keep moving. She should know better.
“How’s your boyfriend?” he asked, reaching past her and grabbing a pair of red silken underwear that had no crotch, easy access. Bliss had been tempted to buy them, but would Rhapsody ever be brave enough to wear them?
“Brian is great,” Bliss insisted. “You planning on wearing those yourself?”
“No, of course not,” Link laughed. “These are for my girlfriend, who’s ass is just a little more in shape than yours.”
The picture of Bliss belting Link across the face that ran through her head was too tempting and she had to take a step away from him before looking at him. “Why are you in this store?”
“Bachelor party souvenirs,” he said simply.
“You are going to buy your brother crotch-less panties?”
“Don’t be daft,” he snapped, “I just told you not two seconds ago that I was going to buy them for my girlfriend. I’m dating Rhapsody’s friend, Lisa.”
“I’m sorry,” Bliss apologized, deciding she would buy a pair of red crotch-less panties, and perhaps wear them herself. She could pretend that Link would know, that he would watch her with another man, and his jealousy would consume him with rage. Sure, she knew that it was not his way, but that was why they were fantasies.
“Rhapsody will never wear them unless it is Ashe that is fucking her,” Link said crudely.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Bliss snapped, turning towards Link and wrapping her arms around herself. Her fear twisted in her stomach for a few moments.
“You’ve been gone a long time,” Link said with no emotion. In a way that was a stronger dagger to her heart than anything else he could have said or done. “There are many things you have been missing in the amount of time you have been in New York gallivanting around.”
“I’m not gallivanting,” Bliss retorted.
“Oh, then what is it you are doing with Brian?”
“I’m in love.”
Link did not seem to be expecting this response. For a moment he was quiet, his blue eyes the color of cold steel, his hatred flowing off of him like the aura he used to carry in high school. “When did you fall in love with him?”
“I’m not doing this.” Bliss gathered her things and began walking up to the counter, even if she was terribly embarrassed to be buying such extravagantly sexual things, things she herself had never used. Why did new brides always receive the best toys? They were the ones who would never use them!
“I just want to know why I was left behind so easily.” Link followed her to the counter.
“No one ever said it was easy, Link,” Bliss snapped, turning on him and trying not to shake badly enough to drop her things. She threw them on the counter at the very astounded girl and turned on him, ready to continue arguing, her blood boiling now that he would not let it drop.
“Then why?” His hurt astounded her and fought back the anger she felt. She felt weak.
“I hope you have fun tonight.” Bliss threw her cash at the lady behind the counter and stormed out, not waiting for a moment for her change. She stormed out of the building and out onto the sidewalk. Link was only two steps behind her, carrying the bags she had forgotten.
“Why won’t you tell me why you left me? It’s all I’m asking for you snobbish priss.”
“That! That right there is why,” Bliss told him, whether it was true or not. “You were always yelling at me and calling me the worst names. Who wants to deal with that forever?”
“This from the girl who knew how to throw it back at me easily?”
“Bliss, there you are!” Thank God for Tiera. She walked up to the store and looked over at her older brother, then once again to Bliss to see both their cheeks blooded with rage. She wanted to hug them both but she knew for sure this was a bad situation to be in the middle of.
“I’m sorry,” Tiera said, knowing she was interrupting a less than happy reunion. “Bliss, I… I think I found the perfect outfit for you to wear tonight.”
“Tiera, don’t tell me you were out shopping with her?” Link asked cruelly. Bliss was now awaiting the biting words that often dribbled from his lips when he was around her, the cruelty that had tainted her heart and made her love him, for however long it had lasted.
“Link, grow up!” she demanded. She snatched her bags from his hands and began her trot away, flipping her hair over her shoulder, and hating herself for the too feminine trait, and only turned her head slightly, so she could glare his way through a veil of long locks. “Everyone else has, you would think the smart one would be the first to move on.”
Bliss turned away and stomped away, just as swiftly as they had met up. Her heart ached the whole way down the street towards the store Tiera had spotted with the ‘perfect’ outfit. Tiera would never understand, who could Bliss explain things to?
”Bliss?”
Bliss looked up at Yuki with the round eyes of someone innocent and naïve. She had come home for Christmas and was enjoying it thoroughly. She had missed everyone like crazy, but it had been good to come home and see not many things had changed. Darrke had finally reappeared and gone to the academy his mom had condemned him to, Waza was still an asshole, and Shu was falling deeper into the drugs that she had left him in. The more things changed the more they stayed the same, wasn’t that the saying?
“Yes, Aunt Yuki?” Even before Bliss had known that she was truly Yuki’s niece, when speaking to the older woman she had always called her ‘aunt’. In many Asian customs it was procured to call an older woman ‘Aunt’ or ‘Uncle’ when having a close relationship with that person. Bliss had always believed it was because Yuki wanted to hold on to her Japanese customs, but had learned just a few months before that Bliss was the only one who followed that custom, and now understood why.
“Bliss, I’m going to ask something very hard of you, but I think it is best for both of you.”
Bliss had that deep feeling of dread that shimmied down her stomach and took a deep grip somewhere along her spine. She sat up straighter; she looked up at Yuki, and waited for the blow to come. “I want you to break things off with Link.”
