Chapter 4
Thanks for all the reviews. I love hearing from you all.
A solid week of hot, humid weather in the city-well, the inner city. See, the skyscrapers trapped winds from the coast, making the people that lived above and away from the city’s center feel the world about ten degrees cooler than those in the inner city. Wonderfully cool up there. Hot as an oven down in the Slums, but that was life.
You had to go with it.
So when the dark clouds began to form, swirling and crowding the sky, everyone was relieved. The first few drops sent children back into the streets to play beneath the heaven sent spray. As the sky shifted from a bruised blood orange hue to a completely bruised appearance, all welcomed it happily.
Thunder clapped and lightening flashed.
Joe Vic needed home knowing Rue wouldn’t be there. There was a shift in their routine. There was dinner already on the stove waiting for Joe Vic to take the initiative to heat his own dinner. She was back at the shop for another two hours. He’d never admit this being that he was used to a life of solitude and temporary people and temporary lodgings, but not having Rue around when he came in made him realize, though he wouldn’t dare vocalize it, that he was lonely.
He ate, pondered whether to shower and go to bed or head out and grab a few beers; instead he watched some sports on the television before hauling his bored frame to bed.
He listened to the rain pour. His hearing caught the sweep of the door as it opened; Rue was home.
A loud boom of thunder and a sudden flash of lightening. Joe Vic turned over, getting comfortable for the night. The rain pelted down in its own rhythm. The type that automatically lulled you to sleep and demanded silence.
Joe Vic closed his eyes falling in line with all other things. Thunder clapped, shaking the entire building. The apartment creaked; soft noises squeaked and popped all over the apartment.
A noise. Joe Vic sat up. A soft knock on his door.
He slid his big frame out of the bed and padded heavily over to the door. It cracked slightly. “Hey.” Rue stood there looking unsure and a little nervous.
“Hey yourself.” He opened the door wider. Now, he could see a pillow and blanket grasped in one hand. “What’s going on?” He folded his arms over his massive chest.
Rue shifted from foot to foot. She didn’t meet Joe Vic’s eyes. She shrugged, turned on her heel and began walking back to the other side. “Never mind, “She grumbled.
Joe Vic rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Wait! Come on, you didn’t walk over here for nothing.”
Rue stopped. Her back still to him. Another flash of lightening, she visibly jumped and gasped. “I was um wondering if I could stay with you….cause--” her voice trailed off.
“What?”
“I’m terrified of thunder and lightening. I know I won’t be able to sleep tonight, so I was wondering if I could sleep with you?”
Joe Vic thought about it. Then, he opened the door wider. Rue passed inside and kicked the door closed. She waited, watching Joe Vic round the bed, shifting and pushing his pillows over to accommodate Rue.
She crawled in between the body-warm sheets, finding a good position wasn’t hard. Just feeling the motions of Joe Vic settling and shaking the bed kept her awake longer than she planned.
He faced the other direction while she stared at his broad back. The view made her think about Mr. Bordereaux who cut yards every Saturday for the ladies back home. He was huge like Joe Vic always offering a smile to little Rueben Delacroix. Those memories of sweaty brows, bulging muscles and bright smiles couldn’t enter her mind without the well remembered heaviness of Rueben’s father’s fist striking him whenever he got caught looking.
Joe Vic stopped moving. Another flash of lightening and she jumped again, just barely, but enough for Joe Vic to notice. There was a huge gulf of space between them. She wished there wasn’t but it had to be. Well, it made sense, Rue thought. Even if she was ‘all there’.
Rue turned over. “Night.”
A clap of thunder. “Night.”
And they settled into the quiet.
