Chapter four.
I never trusted any one but my team after that; even then it took a fair while for me to get to trust them. I never really got over it; some times the memory just hits me at a random point of the day and I feel my stomach lurch and the need to scrub every inch of my body until I removed at least a layer of skin leaving it red and raw. Hazelton was stripped of his title of Master and exiled. I made my self a promise that day that I would train harder so that I would never be made to feel helpless and I would never scream for any one.
After we turned 16 each of us started coming into our powers, all of us had the standard mind reading skills some stronger than others but that was standard for all elves. James was pretty talented with putting people to sleep; Jimonbell with Healing but my powers were strong and at times uncontrollable. They put this down to the rough beginning of my life. My ESP would make walls shake and fires burst out of no where. I took extra lessons to control it.
At the age of 22 we graduated, each of us presented with our favourite weapons made especially for us. When they were presented to me I was afraid to even touch them but the metal beckoned me. I picked the twin Katana’s and stared in awe. I was in full battle dress, As tradition I raised both duelling swords in a salute once to the head master, once to the rest of the teacher, once to the rest of the school, once to the parents who had come to watch and once to my team who saluted me back. We were told to hold out hands out and we all obeyed weapons still in out hands, words were shouted an incantation over the blades and each of us handed our weapons to our teachers. Master Dagon then pressed them to my back where the holsters would have been. I did not scream, I would not break my promise to myself I just grit my teeth my eyes fixed on my masters as the blades merged with in my skin, soon the Katanas had fully merged with my body only leaving a medium sized dragon tattoo on my back, When I called them they would emerge from my body for me to use but the first time was the only time it was painful.
After the ceremony my team mates families rushed to congratulate them, including Jimonbell’s. I stood awkwardly off to the side having no family myself. I watched feeling lonely and neglected as my friends were given gifts, hugs and kisses, I felt a rage inside me I could not understand, a rage of jealousy. I soft tap on my shoulder caused me to turn. Master Dagon stood there with a box.
“Kadoria out of all my students I couldn’t be more proud of you, you have improved immensely. I have taught for 600 years and thought I’d seen it all, but you surprised me. I thought I’d lost you when you were sixteen, when you’d gone into yourself.” I watched as his eyes travelled to my wrists and the scars there. After Master Hazelton had rapped me I had become withdrawn and depressed and tried to kill myself but some thing with in me snapped and I knew I couldn’t die this way. “You have a fighter’s spirit Kadoria and I feel like a proud father”
I smiled and hugged him nearly crushing the gift between us I knew that was the biggest compliment I would ever receive from any master or Ma’am in the school. My rage faded forgotten for now. I open the gift and found a silver whip and he took it from the box.
“With your permission” he said holding it up I blinked but nodded. He took the thin end and held it against my stomach then wrapped it around my waist several time before the handle came to my stomach, with a slow movement he hooked it on. I looked like a normal belt.
“Kadoria!” I was now aware of some one calling my name. Bell was calling me as she the team and their parents waited for me. “Come on! We’re going to eat”
We sat on the ground as food was shared out when Lukens mother spoke up.
“So Kadoria, where are your family?” For a moment I thought I went deaf because the pleasant chatter and laughter from my team went completely quiet. I was just about to answer when James spoke up.
“All around her” James said with a soft smile.
“huh?” Rain said “I thought she didn’t have any? With her parents being dead and all”
I was pretty sure every one winced and there was an uncomfortable silence for a few seconds that seemed to stretch for a life time. Jimonbell put her hand on mine and smiled looking at Rainroe.
“He means us. Rain. Because we are” Bell said. Rain nodded obviously understanding and agreeing. I felt myself swell with pride and love for my team, my family.
“Thanks Bell, guys” I hugged Bell quickly and the pleasant conversation started up once more.
The day after my friends would be going to their home towns with their parents and I would remain in the school to either get a job there permanently or until I find some thing outside of the castle. It would only be temporary as me and my team would be going to the north boarder of our lands to be its protector. Three months alone. I could deal with that but when it came to saying good bye my heart was heavy and my eye burned with the effort of holding back tears.
The team left with their family one by one, until it was just me, James and Jimonbell. Out of the team it was these two who I was closest too, these two I would miss the most. I hugged them both tightly.
“Be good” I said with a mischievous smile,
“K we’ve been talking” James said, I froze usually nothing good came after that sentence. “Me and Bell live less than a mile away and we’ve spoke to our parents and Bells parents have offered you their spare room.”
I blinked my brain slowly trudging through this information.
“I’d love to!” I squealed hugging them both again.
”We figured you’d say that so we packed your bags for you and told Master Dagon. He was saddened by the fact he would loose his apprentice but he wishes you best of luck” I grinned hardly believing my luck. The next three months were bliss and no one foresaw the life changing storm ahead of us.
