Chapter Four
Out of the Dust
Chapter Four
Lacey knew it was risky move but she couldn’t carry on the way things were. It wasn’t fair to the kids having to live like rats in the sewers. As long as they were careful and didn’t make to much of a show that they were there then everything should be fine. Moving into the main building was proving to be a bigger task then she thought though. They had precious few possessions but getting what they did have up and sorted in room that didn’t face the street was becoming tiresome. Sandy couldn’t do any lifting so she was co-ordination the move from a chair in one of the leading passageways. It suited her best and she felt like she was helping.
The kids were peacefully bringing up the few toys they still had and hadn’t broken. Lacey had decided which rooms would be best for each of them. Herself placed at the front of the building. It was easier for her to keep watch from there. Plus it was the first door from the stairs. If anyone got in they would have to go through her first. She would be able to protect them from any harm. Hopefully. Lacey had few possessions of her own. Just a few photos and clothes to keep her happy. That was all she needed. They were lucky enough to have dragged a few mattresses in when they had first moved in. although they were a little dirty from the street they were comfortable and that kept the children happy.
‘Have you got all your stuff ready to be brought up Sand?’
‘Yeah! I should help.’ She made a move to stand but quickly gave up. Lacey knew she wasn’t right but Sandy would never say she needed help or didn’t feel right. Even though Lacey had only known her a short while she knew she hated being a burden. No matter how much Lacey had explained that she liked to help Sandy would only let her do minimal things for her. Placing her things in the back room Lacey joined Sandy in the hallway. Sliding down the wall she sat on the floor next to her.
‘How you feeling?’
‘Not good. I tried so hard not to show it but I have this pain in my back and it won’t go away. I’ve tried everything and it just wont let up. It keeps getting worse!’
‘You should have told me you need a lie down and some food. Come on I have made your bed up. You sleep I’m going to go back out see what I can get it’s quieter out there now.’
Taking her friend by the arm she led her into the room she had chosen for her.
‘I know it look a little messy still but with a little work I think it could be liveable. What you think?’
‘It’s better then a corner in a basement. What’s under the blanket?’
‘A surprise. Come look!’
Lacey led her over to the cloth and dragged it off. Underneath was a cot she had found in one of the alley ways. Lets face it none of the gangs really needed it. Lacey had hidden it in the passage to the basement. Sandy had been unable to leave so she would never have seen it.
‘ I love it!’
Sandy hung on to her friend as the tears started falling from her eyes. She had never been given anything that meant so much to her. Her child would be safe and protected from all that would try to harm it. It would have people around it that would love and cherish it in a world that had gone so wrong. It was a fresh start a new beginning. Lacey then realised that her friends hold had tighten dramatically. It was then that a low scream passed her lips. Sandy was clutching her stomach.
‘What is it?’
My waters have broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
He rounded another corner and he could hear a scream low but enough to send shivers up his spine. He had heard that scream once and once had been enough.
‘SANDY!’
