Initiation Day

Evan decided that if he waited until everyone was asleep, he could make a break for it, and continue his journey to Rocowen. It wasn\'t that he was ungrateful for the aid he had received from the group that had taken him in, he just didn\'t know if he could trust them or not; that had become his mantra for the past three hours, after nightfall had come, when Nersa had left for supplies. Unfortunately for him, Evan found that there was always someone guarding the entrance to the cave, making an unseen escape impossible.

Nersa found him asleep near the cave entrance the next morning, slumped in a sitting position. Shaking Evan awake, Nersa smiled jovially.

\"Today\'s the big day!\" Nersa declared in a tone that Evan found annoyingly cheerful, \"Thought you\'d skip out, did you?\" Evan rose to his feet, stretching and glaring at the other man.

\"I don\'t want any part of your stupid adventure, whatever it is,\" Evan stated icily, \"I thank you for hospitality, but--\" Nersa shushed Evan, wrapping his arm around his shorter companion and walking him to the entrance of the cave.

\"No \'buts\',\" Nersa interjected, \"I want you to understand something. This journey of ours really has a quite noble cause. We\'re looking for something to save a young woman\'s life, Evan.\" By now, they were out in the snow, walking toward a large ship-like craft. Nersa continued, \"Now, we have to find a very rare item in order to cure her; an item that requires a map to find. And you are going to get is that map.\"

\"Why me?\" Evan wanted to know, eyeing the ship as it grew clearer through the heavily falling snow.

\"Because you are small and quick. You are also very silent. The guards were surprised how close you were to the cave entrance,\" Nersa noted, before he realized where Evan was looking. \"Oh, that. We won\'t be taking the Windsong; too noticeable. We\'ll be taking sulics.\"

Evan was about to explain that sulics didn\'t really exist. Before he got a chance to open his mouth, Evan saw (not more than a couple yards from the airship that Nersa and he had been approaching) two very real sulics. They were exactly how he had seen them in old drawings by adventurers. They were long as pythons, with cat-like heads. Large eagle wings were folded against their bodies, and would have covered their elephant-like tails had the appendages not moved so restlessly. One of the sulics was covered with dark brown hair and feathers; the other was more auburn in color.

\"Eui is mine,\" Nersa motioned towards the darker beast, patting it gently between the shoulders, \"You\'ll ride Mita.\" The reddish animal walked slowly towards Evan, bowing its head once in curiosity. Evan had never imagined sulics to be so tall, but Mita\'s shoulders easily reached chest-level.

\"Where are we going?\" Evan asked, trying to watch Nersa and Mita at the same time. Nersa was busy putting the reins on the sulics.

\"Ever hear of Tirantin Manor?\" Nersa queried in return. \"The map we need is there. One of my men had easy access to that estate a while back, but left it all behind to join me. We didn\'t know anything about the map until someone more familiar with the legend joined up.\" Evan shrugged in acceptance.

\'After all,\' Evan thought to himself, \'What\'s a legendary treasure without a legendary treasure map?\' He watched Nersa placing blankets and saddles on the sulics. Running a hand through his hair, he looked away. Evan had not intended to stare at the man, but he was very handsome with his long hair pulled back like that. He was almost repulsed by the attraction he felt for Nersa at that moment.

\"What is that ridiculous thing you wear on your face?\" Evan sneered, trying to hide his fluttery stomach. Nersa looked up as he tightened Mita\'s saddle one last time.

\"These?\" Nersa asked, taking the item in question off. \"These are spectacles. My eyesight isn\'t exactly what you\'d call perfect.\" Nersa handed them to Evan, and sat next to him.

Evan examined the frames carefully. \"It\'s just a couple of glass rectangles held together by wire,\" He observed, handing the specs back to their owner.

\"Odd, isn\'t it,\" Nersa agreed, \"How a little bit of glass can help me see better?\" He put the glasses back on and stood up. He strode away a few paces before noticing that Evan was no longer beside him.

\"Come on, we haven\'t much time to loose,\" Nersa called. Evan scrambled to his feet and mounted his sulic somewhat awkwardly.

\"Well, good luck,\" Nersa stated reluctantly, tying Mita in a hard-to-see spot. He opened his bag and gave Evan a tunic and a cloak. \"Put these on. They have lots of hidden little pockets; become familiar with them before you enter the mansion.\"

Evan nodded, dreading the task before him. As he put on the cloths that Nersa had presented him with, Evan began to once again contemplate his chances of escape.

\"Also, take this,\" Nersa continued, as Evan finished fastening his cloak. In Nersa\'s hand was a small, egg-shaped device with a grey bump on one side. \"Conceal it, and use it only if you must. I don\'t want you to kill unnecesarily.\" Evan\'s eyes furrowed in confusion, but he nodded once and concealed the item in his left sleeve.

\"I still don\'t know your name,\" Evan stated suddenly, as Nersa headed back to Eui. \"If I\'m going to die looking for a map, shouldn\'t I at least know the name of the man who got me into this mess?\"

\"Nersa Lirtau,\" stated the selender man. He gracefully mounted his dark sulic, and saluted Evan. \"Again, good luck. I\'ll be waiting for you in the clearing.\" Nersa said, and Eui carried his master southward.

A/N- This will most likely be my last update for a few months as I am heading for basic one week from tommorrow, the 15th. When I get back and have some time, I\'ll get to work on finishing the story. Until then, it\'ll be on hold.
