Falling For You

Chapter 4

Illicit Desires

\"In a great romance, each person plays a part the other really likes.\"

-- Elizabeth Ashley

‘The anti Christ has risen, and he is now attending my high school,’ Breanna thought to herself bitterly as she slammed her English text book closed and let out a long, heavy sigh. Fingering the ends of her hair, she glanced around at the perpetual neatness of her bedroom and sighed again. ‘I’m so screwed…’

Puzzled blue eyes glanced at her curiously. “Are you ok, Bre?”

Forcing a cheerful smile in the direction of her concerned looking boyfriend, Breanna nodded and replied brightly, “Yup, I’m fine. Just a little tired of studying, know what I mean?”

‘Liar. You’re so strung out you can barely sleep at night and you know why…’

‘Shut up. It’s not like I can tell him that! Oh God, I can just see how that conversation would go… No, Brent, my boyfriend of two years whom I love, I’m not ok. Would you like to know why? Really? Ok, well let me fill you in on a few things I’ve been keeping from you… Well, for one, I haven’t slept in three days because every time I try, my dreams are plagued with images of an encounter I had the other day involving a certain gorgeous, amber eyed SPAWN OF SATAN in the science lab. What were we doing? Oh, silly, silly boy… What do you think we were doing? And two, now everywhere I look… yeah, there he is!!! Watching me. Waiting for me to give in…’

‘You do realize you’re going to hell, right?’

‘Yep. Straight to the fiery pits of hell…’

“Breanna?” an amused male voice cut in, snapping her out of her troubled thoughts.

“Oh, sorry. Did you say something?”

Brent chuckled and pulled her from her spot perched on top of her desk into his arms. “You’ve been so distracted lately. Is there anything you want to talk about?”

Guiltily averting his inquisitive gaze, Breanna buried her face in his t-shirt and mumbled into the fabric, “No… I’m just a little stressed out, I guess.”

‘And Devon’s the devil? Ha… At least he’s up front with his evil-ness…’

“Well… maybe there’s something I can do to help… alleviate your tension,” Brent murmured softly as he nipped gently at the skin on her neck. Sighing contentdly, Breanna melted into his familiar embrace and closed her eyes only to be bombarded with memories of a much more passionate tryst in the hollows of a darkened classroom.

Frustration secreting from her very pores, Breanna twisted herself until she was straddling Brent’s lap, and then proceeded to crush her lips to his in a kiss meant to erase all the confused feelings she had for Devon Pierce from her mind.

Pulling her tightly to him, Brent groaned against the sensual onslaught of her kiss. His lips parted as she claimed his mouth with a fierceness he hadn’t known she possessed. She sighed and he swallowed her breath, taking all of her into him. Their tongues tangled together in a wild dance of two very different types of need. Breanna’s desperate need to eliminate any and all thoughts of the man who’d single handedly managed to make her question her way of living, and Brent’s need to comfort his girlfriend in any way he could.

‘She says there’s nothing wrong, but I can tell she’s lying. I wish she would let me in, let me help her instead of always insisting she can do everything on her own…’

All coherent thoughts were driven away as she clung to him, fingers digging into his shirt until he could’ve sworn he felt the heat of her touch branding his skin right through the material of his shirt. And it wasn’t enough. Wasn’t nearly enough.

Brent wanted all of her. Everything. Not only did he want to feel her smooth, soft skin beneath his palms, hear her sighs, watch her eyes glaze over as he slid his body into hers; but he also wanted a chance to see inside the places she hid from him. All he wanted was to be close to her, to have her let him share some of the burdens she dealt with day after day. But, he couldn’t love her like he wanted to unless she decided let him in.

‘Why? Why can’t I stop thinking about him? It just doesn’t make sense! I love Brent! I want to be with him, not with someone who only wants to add me to the long list of naïve girls he’s already bent to his will…’

Breanna wasn’t stupid. She knew what Devon’s intentions were. What he wanted from her. But, some part of her kept asking questions she knew she shouldn’t think about. Questions she knew could destroy all the walls she’d built around herself to keep people like him out. People who could expose things about herself that should never be revealed…

‘What if…? What if you do tell him? That you want him. That you want to feel all the things he promised to show you. What if he does, and what if… you like it…?

‘It doesn’t matter’, she told herself firmly as she attempted to lose herself in the kiss she was sharing with the only man she should ever have such feelings about. ‘I’ll never give in to him. Never.’

‘Always pretending, Breanna. You can lie to everyone else, but you can’t lie to yourself. Brent’s kisses have never made you feel the way Devon’s did. Face it… with him you felt something you’ve never felt before. Something you’ve been searching for, but until you met him, never found…’

‘And what would that be?’ she asked herself sarcastically.

‘Fireworks, Breanna… That spark that should be there, but never is.’

Tearing his mouth from hers, Brent dipped his head and kissed her neck, running the tip of his tongue along her flesh while she shivered and whispered his name. That broken hush of sound sent new ribbons of heat snaking through him until he felt as though the flames would simply engulf him. And it still wasn’t enough. For either of them.

‘You’re wrong. I love the feeling of being in Brent’s arms, of making love to him… I do!

‘Oh, sure, it feels nice and all, but it’s nothing compared to the heat and passion you felt when Devon had you pressed up against that teacher’s desk, now is it?’

“Breanna,” he murmured, his moist breath dusting her skin. She tipped her head to one side, to give him easier access, and then leaned into him completely, silently offering everything that had suddenly become so desperately essential.

“Brent,” she mumbled softly, “Love me. Show me how much you love me.”

Brent shook his head, and reached up to disentangle her arms from around his neck. His hands slid down their length until he was holding her hands in his. His thumbs stroked her palms, torturing them both… yet, he couldn’t quite bring himself to let her go all at once.

“I can’t.”

“What?” Dazed herself, Breanna shook her head and leaned back a little to look at his pained expression.

“I can’t love you unless you let me, Bre. Using sex as a way to run away from yourself is no way to live, and I can’t help you with something I know nothing about.”

Scooting off his lap, Breanna turned her back on him and ran a hand through her tangled obsidian tresses. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Brent. I told you that I’m fine, didn’t I?”

Brent exhaled heavily and nodded in agreement. “That you did, that you did. But, your mouth and your body are telling me two different stories.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your mouth always tells me that you’re happy, that everything is ok. Your body on the other hand… I can feel the tenseness in your muscles when I touch you, the way you flinch involuntarily when I get too close to something you don’t want to share.”

“It hurts me, Bre. To be so close to you, yet so far away. I love you, and I want to know everything about you, the good and bad. Why? Why won’t you let me in?”

Flinging herself into his arms once more, Breanna buried her face into his chest and whispered hesitantly, “Because I’m afraid of what you may find.”

“Please don’t push me, Brent. I love you, but… there are things about myself that even I don’t want to face. Just be happy with what I’m willing to give, ok? Please?”

“Do I really have a choice?” he asked, tilting her chin up so he could look into her eyes. “I don’t want to lose you, Bre, and I’ll do anything I have to do to keep you by my side. Whatever you’re willing to give… I guess I’ll just have to accept and be happy with it.”

“Thank you,” she whispered, guilt at how willing he was to accept her little half truths torturing her even as she took his mouth in another fervent lip lock.

‘Oh God, what am I doing?! I can’t do this to him! Deceiving someone who loves me so completely… I’m such a horrible person…’

‘Yeah… yeah, you are…’

But, despite her guilty thoughts, Breanna couldn’t help but wonder as she surrendered herself to a kiss that always seemed to be lacking that ever elusive spark …

‘What if…?’
