Chapter 4
After I made a quick call to my parents, the trip to the north went perfectly. We arrived at about 7:30 pm and quickly unloaded. Zeus was happy to be out of the car and running around relieving himself on everything he could find. I unpacked my things in the big room that my parents usually use while Gabriel moved into the room I used.
“What do you want for desert?” I asked because we’d gotten dinner on the road.
“You covered in chocolate,” Gabriel answered matter of fact.
“Don’t make me tell you again. You remember what I said right?”
“Yes, I remember it perfectly, but you better get some simple clothes on.”
“Why?”
“If you’re going to turn you’ll want clothes that come off easy, and no under things,” he said uncomfortably.
“Under things? You can’t say underwear or bra and panties?”
“Yes, I just choose not to. Now do you want to be changed or not?”
“Of course I do. Let me change into some sweats real quick.”
“Where your pendant too.” I heard Gabriel call after me. Lets see what does one where when one is going to be turning into an animal with four legs? How about some black and gray flannel pants with a navy blue hoodie. Sounded good to me. Once I was dressed complete with pendant I walked out into the woods with Gabriel leading the way. I swear we walked for hours even though it was for only 30 minutes. We reached a small clearing surrounded by tall pines trees. During the day I’m sure they looked beautiful, but at night they seemed to be silent giants closing us in.
“Okay Bronwyn, I’m going to change. After I’m done if you have any doubts all you have to do is turn around and walk away from me, but if you want me to bite you all you have to do is get undressed and bend down so I can reach your arm. Are you ready?”
“Yes love, I’m ready,” I said. He stopped when he realized I had called him love. He smiled, stripped (I blushed again), and got down on his hands and knees. At first I didn’t notice anything but soon I saw ripples moving over Gabriel’s skin. His nose lengthened into a snout, his eyes moved back, his legs and arms shortened, ebony hair sprang forth, and a tail began to grow at the base of his spine. I couldn’t look away; it was beautiful in a strange way. The change ended with a large midnight wolf giving a great stretch and yawn. He looked my way and waited. I didn’t even hesitate. I started undressing, relishing the caress of the cool night air. I kneeled down and held out my arm. The wolf gave me a tongue-lolling grin and walked up to me. Gabriel clamped down on my forearm, it hurt and it broke the skin in too many places to count. Soon I felt a tingle then a burn start at the bite marks and spread to different parts of my body. A spasm of pain started at the bottom of my spine and traveled to the base of my neck and threw me forward on my hands. I could feel my organs moving and changing, my arms and legs were remolding, dark silver tipped hair was sprouting from my changing arms. I didn’t notice the pain, no, that’s not right. The pain wasn’t a bad pain, it was like getting your back cracked or when you stretch and your joints pop. It was a refreshing freeing pain. Soon it was over and there I stood in my new form, on my own four legs.
My senses were amazing. I could hear a mouse rustling in the leaves over 50 yards away. I could see only black and white but I was so much sharper than my human sight, and the smells. Oh the smells. Then I heard something strange, like someone talking in my head.
“Bronwyn…can you hear me sweet?” I heard Gabriel think.
“Yes, this is amazing. How could I ever have second thoughts about this?”
“Yes, it is rather unbelievable. Now for your first hunt…” I heard Gabriel say in the background. I was focusing in on another sound. Where those footsteps, if they were there were an awful lot of them. I caught snippets of thoughts.
“Move in slow, we’re not to hurt the female.”
“I’ll take the left side. You get the right.”
“We’ll flush her towards the ravine and cut her off there.”
“Bronwyn did you listen to a word I just said?” Gabriel’s thought voice cut in. But before I could respond wolves leapt out of the brush and surrounded us.
“What the hell!” Gabriel exclaimed. “Bronwyn run, they want you.”
“No, I won t leave you.” I say.
“Damn it I said run!” He yelled kicking me with his hind leg. I saw an opening between two of the wolves and made a break for it. I didn’t know where to go.
I knew the ravine that they had been talking about; there was only one way in and one way out. I couldn’t go there. I can’t be caught. But where could I go? Where could I hide? Then it hit me, I could go to the caves. Well they weren’t exactly caves they were really old mineshafts, but I knew them better than the back of my hand, well paw now, but anyway. I could lose my pursuers in there for sure, they could track my scent but they didn’t know where the weak spots on bridges were or where the tunnels ended in a wall.
First thing I had to do was get my bearings. I had just passed the tree that was struck by lightning and I was heading west, I needed to head north of the tree, the mines were only a mile away. I made a sharp turn to the right and ran as fast as my new body would let me. I covered ground in yards per bound. I could faintly hear my pursuers behind me. Soon we were in a clearing and I could see the opening of the mineshaft. I glanced behind me to make sure my followers were still there, they were and their numbers were fewer than I thought, only three. I dove into the mines and ran toward the center of them. There was an old shack there and in it my father had put some supplies incase we ever got caught in a storm while we were out we could hide in the mines. The supplies included spare clothes and a shotgun with shells, you could never be too careful in the wilderness. I took the long winding way down, crossing underwater streams and the like trying to slow my pursuers down anyway I could. I reached the shack and realized that I would have to change back in order to get in, but I didn’t know how. Gabriel hadn’t taught me that yet. I sat down and decided that I would try, but I had to hurry. I closed my eyes and concentrated on what my body felt like in human form, and soon I felt myself changing and molding once again. When it was over I opened my eyes and was shocked that I could see in color once again. My sense of smell was still strong and my hearing sharper but other that that there was no way to tell that my body had just been a wolf’s.
The door of the shack was unlocked and I walked right in. I opened the chest that contained the spare clothes and started to get dressed. Just as I was pulling my bra over my head I heard the sound of claws on stone in the distance. My shirt lay forgotten as I rushed to the closet and grabbed the shotgun. It was loaded but I grabbed the ammo box anyway. The sound was closer now and I knew that they would be at the door in less than a minute. I stationed myself at the window at the front of the shack and made myself visible and made my gun visible, and waited. I didn’t have to wait long; soon two wolves ran into my cavern. I took aim and fired. My bullet hit its mark and the lead wolf went down and didn’t get up. I sure hoped that whole thing about only a silver bullet can kill a werewolf wasn’t true. It seemed it wasn’t because the wolf didn’t move and shuddered back into human form. The remaining wolf stopped on a dime and looked for cover, there was none. I racked another shell into the chamber and put the gun to my shoulder to shoot again, the remaining wolf looked helpless and scattered looking for a place to hide. I shot him and down he went becoming human as he fell. I racked another shell and walked out of the shack.
They didn’t move, didn’t breath. They were dead. I guess those extra weekends at the shooting range did serve a purpose after all. I had to get back to the house. It would be quicker if I traveled as a wolf, so I went back into the shack. Made my clothes into a bundle I could carry in my animal form, and got down on my hands and knees to change. It came easy and I soon had my bundle of clothes in my mouth running towards the cottage.
“What do you want for desert?” I asked because we’d gotten dinner on the road.
