Chapter Three: Cyleco
I ran through the bushes, chasing after a squirrel at an incredible speed, sweating right through my clothes. I was getting closer...closer...but still it ran ahead of me, its mere prescence taunting me unknowingly. Tuomos dashed a few meters away, observing my progress. I was learning to hunt animals. For a half vampire, human blood was not mandatory, but I needed to get blood of some sort every day.
I ran faster, faster still, and finally lunged at the squirrel. I reached out and grabbed it and saw Tuomos skid to a halt out of the corner of my eye. He walked over to where I was, crouched on the ground like a hungry beast, grasping the squeaking, sturggling animal.
\"Bite it,\" he said quietly.
I reared my head backwards and then brought it down again, with my fangs fully bared. I sunk them into the squirrel\'s neck, instantly absorbing the red liquid. Blood. It was sweet and strong against my tongue and mouth, and it felt wonderful. It was wonderful to drink a fellow animal\'s blood.
I had done it. I had made my first catch, my first successful catch. And now that I had a taste for blood, there was no turning back.
When darkness came, Tuomos and I set out for Club Cyleco, whatever that was. I suspected it was a vampire hangout of some sort. When we finally reached an old alleyway with a door so hard to see it was almost invisible, Tuomos finally said, \"This is the place. Take note of the engraving.\"
I noticed words carved above the door, nearly faded away. They read: Yadrestey erohw a deckuf mij.
\"What\'s that supposed to be? \'Jim fucked a whore yesterday\' spelled backwards?\" I asked, starting to get weirded out.
\"No,\" Tuomos laughed, \"It\'s old vampire language. It\'s scarcely used today. Remember it, because they ask to see newcomers\' fangs and sometimes ask them the \'password.\' That\'s the password. If you don\'t get it right...you don\'t want to know.\"
We stepped inside, and what I saw was a dark dance club and bar packed with people - all vampires, I assumed. Rob Zombie\'s song Dragula was blasting over the loudspeakers. Hm. I managed to think of something humorous - these people danced to metal songs!
My good mood took a plunge when a seven-foot-tall black guy with what looked like three hundred pounds of muscle stepped in front of Tuomos and me, blocking us from stepping any farther. He nodded at Tuomos to show that he could pass. \"Show me your fangs, girl,\" he commanded me in his booming, deep voice.
I pulled my mouth into the position a cat would hiss in. The big guy pulled on one of my fangs, and it didn\'t budge. \"Yep,\" he said, \"The real thing. Now, what\'s the password.\"
\"Er...Jim fucked...no, I made a mistake, that\'s not my answer! Um...er...yadrestey erohw a deckuf mij?\" I asked hopefully.
He moved aside to show that I could pass. I stepped forward and was beside Tuomos again. \"So, now that we\'re in, now what?\"
\"You should meet Jagga,\" Tuomos said, \"He\'s the most well-known vampire in the state...very important. He has his own morals and values...he never drinks the blood of children or defenseless women. It\'s mainly men he goes after, because he believes that true honor is only taking from those who can match your strength.\"
Shortly after we began to walk to the other side of the room, a crowd of girls in different sorts of small clothes gathered around. \"Whoa,\" one said, \"Tuomos is back!\"
\"Never thought we\'d see him again!\"
\"It\'s really him?\"
\"Oh my God!\"
\"It\'s really Tuomos!\"
I suppressed a laugh with difficulty. I didn\'t know much about Tuomos\' past, but apparently he had been some sort of vampire pimp back in the day.
But...this was infuriating. Couldn\'t those sluts see that I was standing right there? No, I was still nonexistant. Fast running, a taste for blood, and some fancy fangs hadn\'t changed the fact that I was a nobody. But I couldn\'t take their stupid pretend swooning anymore...
\"Just ignore them,\" Tuomos muttered, but it was too late. I turned around and hissed at the Tuomos Fanclub in a catlike way. They scuttled off like a colony of ants under a hiker\'s foot.
Tuomos didn\'t have time to react to what I had done in any way, because we had reached the bar by then. He sat down and motioned for me to do the same. Instantly, another overlarge black guy walked over, taking a break from filling glasses. \"Tuomos!\" he cried, \"Good to have you back! And who\'s this...?\"
\"My name\'s Victoria,\" I said quickly, \"I\'m half-vampire. Tuomos is helping me get used to it.\"
\"Oh!\" Jagga - or at least I suspected this was him - said, \"So you\'re the one. He\'s been talking about finding you for years now. Looks like he\'s done it.\"
\"Yeah, I have,\" Tuomos said, \"So, Jagga, what brought you down from being so notorious to being one of the guys working here? Before, you usually just came to drink and pick up girls.\"
\"I think the humans were starting to suspect me,\" Jagga said, \"So I have to go undercover. You know, fit in, look like the most normal guy you can find. Anyway, do either of you want anything to drink?\"
While Tuomos said that he had had too much blood earlier and couldn\'t drink anything, I was thirsty as hell. It had seemed like forever since the blood. \"It doesn\'t happen to be...all alchoholic beverages on your little menu, does it?\" I asked.
\"Yeah, it is,\" Jagga said indifferently. Before I could explain that I was underage, Jagga slammed a beer bottle down in front of me. I had no choice - I would have to drink it. It was only polite. But then one thing led to another, and I was drowsing off in front of five empty bottles. My head collapsed onto the bar.
Since I was completely conked out, I don\'t actually have any memory of the next few hours, but Tuomos later explained what had happed. I had had way too much to drink, and he had to carry me back to my house, since neither of us happened to own a vehicle. I slept in, and finally awoke at noon.
I found myself on the living room couch. Tuomos walked in from...I didn\'t knpw what room it was, I was too hungover.
\"Ugh...what happened last night?\" I asked sleepily.
\"Well,\" Tuomos said thoughtfully, \"I don\'t have a very good memory due to all the drugs I snorted, but if I remember right, you had lot to drink and we ended up fucking for three hours or something crazy.\"
\"WHAT?!\" I sputtered, sitting up faster than lightning.
\"Nah, I\'m just kidding. You had too much to drink, so I had to carry you five miles back here. And now my arms are killing me...\"
\"You\'d better be grateful that didn\'t really happen,\" I muttered, \"Or else I\'d only be killing you right about now.\"
