Devin finished Garry Andrews Chemistry homework and picked up the next sheet. English this time. Looking at the name Jimmy McBride he felt like writing nursery rhymes with swearing added in place of the poem one was supposed to compose.

Maybe it’s not her fault, he thought. Maybe Jimmy pressured her or something. Maybe –

“Hi, Dad”

“Devin! How’s that homework going, eh?” His father liked to punctuate his speech with ‘eh’s and ‘em’s and an occasional ya’ll. It didn’t match too well with his Yankee accent.

“Okay”

“Listen, I talked to a physical therapist today, and he’s doing some fascinating experiments in muscle building, I’ve set up a meeting for next Thursday. Now on another matter,” he continued, “I’ve had a… complaint.”

Devin gave a questioning look.

“Jimmy found you in the locker room with his girl, yes?”

“Dad, she was waiting for him and I was waiting for you…”

“Yes, Devin, I see. But you have to understand, a man feels extreme possession of his woman, or in this case girl. You can’t just intrude like that – no, listen – I know he’s being a little unrealistic here, worrying about you, but a man is irrational about these kind of things. There are just a few possessions real men keep, and those… you have to respect that”

“Possessions?”

“Oh, you’ve been listening to your aunt again, huh? She’ll be turning you into a homo if you’re not careful. Now, Devin, while we’re on the subject, you remember a few years back when I talked to you about… ‘bees and birds’” he laughed uproariously.

“Anyway, you need to know that there are three kinds of women in the world. There’s your mother, a good, upstanding Christian wife who keeps this house beautiful and smelling nice” he took an appreciative sniff of the smell of baking bread. “That’s the kind of woman you marry, you better hope you find one, they’re running out. And then there’s my sister, with her degree and lab and God defying beliefs. That’s the kind of woman NO one marries, she’s a true spinster.

“And then,” a sigh, “there’s the kind of women that Regina Jackson is going to grow up to be. It’s no surprise, really, her families pure trash, and if she marries she’ll marry more trash.”

Devin tried to keep his temper under control. “Jimmy McBride seems to like her enough”

“See that’s the thing, boy,” another attempt at being southern, “that’s the kind of woman you… well, you know. A man’s got to sow a few wild oats – well, not literally. But before you settle down with a good Christian girl, a man has to get the wild urges out of his system. And that’s why God put woman like Mary Jackson on earth”

“Mary Jackson?”

“Why sure, I never told you we dated in high school? Mary Van Dan then. We had a helluva time, she was the purtiest girl in high school. So you see where Regina gets it… Anyways, we went to the prom together and all. But then I went to College and when I got back I married you mother, right out of cooking school. And old Mary married Lyle Jackson, the epitome of trash. And now her daughter is dating Jimmy, and then Jimmy will go to college and then he’ll settle down with a nice girl while that Regina will marry some other trash. Like mother like daughter. And those are the facts of women. You’d better hope you find a nice girl and settle down with her. And while we’re on this, you’re not cheat on her unless she’s pregnant, all right? And if she is, you do it discreetly.”

Devin thought he would explode. Keeping his voice steady, “Did you cheat on mom with Mary Jackson while she was pregnant?”

His father was shocked. “No! She was alreay married. You know it\'s a sin to steal another man\'s possessions, it\'s right there in the Ten Commandments boy\"

“Yeah. Right” Devin said agreeably. “I’m going to go over to Mikey’s now, I’m done with these”

“Ah, yes, go one. That Mikey, I think he shows promise… Lose the baby fat, build up some more muscle… you tell him I said so”

“Yeah” Devin just wanted to get out of the house.
