Lily shivered as she stepped out of the cool shower. It had taken nearly a half an hour under the cold spray to get the flush from her body.
Why did he have to do those things, when he knew she was getting married?
He just didn’t understand. It was easy for him to make women swoon, take them home and have his way, then forget about them. He could fall in and out of love as he pleased, but she didn’t have that luxury.
Tom was well liked by her parents and a respected accountant for a large company. She could believe her life would be comfortable, that he would give her a quiet life with a house and children.
Lily pulled out a sleeveless blue jean shirt and matching pants, topping it off with small work boots that fit her little feet. Nothing too revealing.
She dried her hair with a towel and headed downstairs to look for Shawn.
“Where is everybody,” she mused when she found an empty house. She turned at the sound of his voice.
“Shawn’s visiting his girl, and the rest of the band went out to get a drink.” He smiled mildly, making her want to run. “Just you and me, babe.”
She put her hands on her hips. “Well, in that case, I’m going back upstairs, because I have nothing to say to you.”
He crossed his arms, his stance widening as if for battle. “Why do you fight me, Lily?”
“I’m getting married, Sebastian.”
He sighed, all cockiness gone to be replaced by irritation. “Bullshit, Lil.”
She started, looking up at him. “What is it with everyone lately? First Tom, then Shawn, and now you!” She dragged a hand over her face, matching his irritation. “Does everyone have to give me a hard time?”
The annoyance was gone in an instant, replaced by his indomitable, everlasting charm, as he stepped closer. “I don’t wanna give you a hard time, babe.” His face was close enough that his sweet breath ghosted over her lips.
A voice inside her head screamed incessantly that she should back away, just turn and run up the stairs, but she was riveted to the floor.
That moist, sensual mouth scaled some of the distance between them toward her own. “I just wanna give you some lovin’,” he murmured huskily, ghosting his lips over hers in a fluttery kiss that left her breathless. “You want me to love you, Lil’?”
She’d been of a mind to shout a loud, reverberating, ‘YES!’ but instead followed her first instincts and fled up the stairs.
Making sure she locked her bedroom door tight, she fell across the bed, and screamed into her pillow in frustration. She flopped onto her back and shoved her hair out of her face. “I hate him.”
She lay there for a while in silence, milling over what to do about Sebastian, until her stomach rumbled loudly. Should she chance going downstairs?
Yes.
She wasn’t going to let him get to her.
Flinging the door open, she headed downstairs toward the kitchen.
She pulled out the ingredients for a turkey sandwich and laid them on the counter. She sliced a tomato and was pulling lettuce apart when she heard someone come up behind her.
Her fingers wrapped around the handle of the knife, lifting the tip heavenward. “Not now, Sebastian. I swear, I’ll use this.”
“Glad I’m not Bastian.”
She breathed a sigh of relief. “How was your day, Shawn?”
He grinned incorrigibly and snatched a piece of turkey from her unfinished sandwich. “Got laid,” he said, popping it into his mouth and chewing.
“Over-share!”
He chuckled. “What were you and Bastian up to while everyone was gone?”
She finished making her lunch before answering. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
Shawn’s smile was suspicious.
She lifted a brow. “Why do you ask?”
He shrugged. “Just being conversational.”
Lily brushed him off and ate her sandwich, taking it with her to the office. Writer’s block had been hovering in the shadows for a few days and if she didn’t put pen to paper, she’d be stuck for ideas indefinitely.
That night, the guys decided to start a bonfire in the back yard and grill out for dinner. They’d invited the guys from a couple of local bands and, of course, quite a few girls.
Shawn, Bastian, and the rest of Six Guns were gathered near the big blaze. Shawn had a Crate combo amp set up on the lawn and he and Bastian were plugged in, running through cover tunes to amuse the guests.
“How about Once Bitten… Twice Shy?”
The rockers, metalheads, and bimbos around them clapped and whistled.
Bastian was in his element. He’d once confessed that the best part about playing music wasn’t the money or the groupies. It was jamming with other musicians.
They started the song, Jack joining them on bass, and eventually had most of the guest singing along loudly.
She and Frank were left to the grilling and they took in the show from closer to the house.
After a while, the music stopped and Shawn sidled up to the grill to watch the steaks so she and Frank could take a break.
Lily sat on the grass amongst the little group and sipped a bottle of Pepsi. She closed her eyes and let the cool air clear her mind.
She could handle Sebastian. She just had to resist him.
Her mind was dragged back to here-and-now when the familiar strains began to come from Bastian’s guitar.
His lips were parted and he moved to the rhythm, a little frown of concentration appearing.

There\'s a feelin\'
Little left of heaven
Shook me when you looked my way
Can\'t believe it
Legs that run forever
Love to know you better any time, any place

He spared her an intimate glance that made her skin heat up.

Fallin\', fallin\'
I\'m fallin\' under your spell
Callin\', callin\'
If you leave me lonely
And you take away the things that I love
Got a bad emotion
Tangled in the web of your love

Lily bit her lip, turning her face toward the ground. Why was he doing this? He knew he had her cornered. If she left or made a scene people would talk.

Hypnotisin\'
My temperature\'s risin\'
Sweat rolls from my head to your lips
No surprises
No, now nothin\' disguises
The dangerous curve of your hips

She squeezed her eyes shut, wanting him to just stop. It wasn’t fair.

If you see me comin\'
Better run and find a place you can hide
Got a bad desire
Burnin\' up my lovin\' inside (yeah)
Oh, burnin\' up my lovin\' inside
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Tangled in the web of your love

She sipped her Pepsi and headed back to the grill, taking the spatula from Shawn. She just needed to stay focused on something and she would be okay.
She avoided Bastian for the rest of the evening, but her dreams that night were hot, dangerous.
