Memories.

“Auntie Kewy, auntie Kewy!”

Raising my head from my paper work for the day I see my godchild running towards me. I have to brace myself as he jumps over my desk into my lap. To this day it still surprises me that he can leap that high without hurting himself. Wrapping his tail around my wrist and his little arms around my neck he hugs me with as much strength as he can muster.

“Hey squirt. What are you doing here?”

“We’re getting groceries!”

“So, what are you doing here then?”

“Hehe. I wanted to see you.”

I look up as I hear the door chime. Just as I suspected there stands Kris. Her eyes scan across the room and land on the little bundle in my lap. I just sit there and grin as Dylan bounces on my lap telling me about the latest toy he had received. She walks over and leans on my desk smiling at her son’s excitement. Since he was still busy talking to me he didn’t notice that his Mapa was poised to tickle.

“Why you little runaway.” I hold on to the squealing little fox kit as she tickles him mercilessly. “You scared me by running off like that.”

“Eeeehhhehehehehehe Mapa! Stop!”
“You didn’t say the magic word.” She says as she continues her attack.
“Pewees?”
With that she stops tickling him and holds out her arms to him. He hops into her arms and hugs her tightly. I still remember the day she picked him out at the orphanage. There were five little cubs crawling around the playpen. It was so hard for her to choose one of them. They all looked so cute. Dylan, however, was different from the rest. Instead of just crawling aimlessly around he sat there and stared deeply into Kris’s eyes. She reached her hand down into the playpen and before we had time to react he had jumped and clung to her arm. That decided it for her. With him still clinging to her arm she filled out the adoption papers and took him home for the first time.

“So Kells, You coming to the party tonight?” She asks as she shifts Dylan in her arms.

“I don’t think your cousin would let me get out of it even if I wanted to. If I didn’t show he’d probably come over to my house and drag me by my tail kicking and screaming.”

“Yep that sounds like Tom alright. You remember where to go?”

“That little Italian place on eat street right?”

“Yup that’s right. Well, I guess we should finish our grocery shopping. Come on Dylan let’s go see what mom’s up to.”

“Can we get ice-cream?”

“Sure, and if you’re good for the babysitter tonight we’ll take you to the zoo tomorrow.”

“Yay! Zoo!”

I shake my head and chuckle as they head out of the spa. It is always fun seeing those two. Sometimes you can’t really tell that she is his parent. They act more like siblings. When they go to the park you can hear the delighted giggles as they play. Some days I wish I were in that place. Seeing the smiling face of a little child as I play with them as much as possible. For now, however I tend to spoil my godson as much as I possibly can. Last year, with his parent’s permission of course, I bought him a puppy. Those two are pretty much inseparable now. I’m surprised I didn’t see that pup come running in with him.

“Well looks like that’s that. Mike I’m heading out.” I lock my desk and head to the back.

“Have fun tonight Kell.” Mike calls to me as he is locking the door for the night. “I’ll see you on Monday.”

“Ya. See you mike.” Putting on my jacket and helmet head out the back and onto my bike. There is no way in hell I’m going to go to the dinner party dressed in my work cloths. As I dodge traffic on my way home I think about this mystery woman that is coming to the party. Tom never told me about her before, so I didn’t know what to expect. Would she be human, hanyo, or youkai? I guess I won’t know till I get there.

As I walk into my house Midnight decides to pounce at my feet. “Hey you crazy cat, you miss me?” He purrs and rubs his back against my leg. I bend down and pick him up. Rubbing my face against his I echo his purrs. “Well I guess I should check the messages and then get ready.” Putting Midnight back down I walk over to my blinking answering machine.

“You have one new message. Hey Kell. Just calling to wish you a happy birthday and I hope you didn’t get too plastered last night. Jeremiah, the kids and I are planning on taking mom and dad to Florida this winter for their anniversary. I know dad won’t approve of it but I’ll send you the number to our room when we get there.”

My father, it has been years since I’ve seen him. I guess the last time I saw him was when I decided to finally tell my parents about my sexuality. Mom was ok with it as I suspected. My dad, on the other hand, flipped out on me. I always knew telling dad wouldn’t be a good thing. At first he just sat there with his mouth hanging open, but that was short lived.

******************Flashback*****************

“How dare you?!”

“What?”

“How dare you come into my house and pull that horse shit on me.”

“Horse shit? Dad I…”

“Get out! Get the hell out of my house you fucking Dike!”

“Honey!”

“No. Don’t honey me. I want her out of my house and that’s final!”

“But……”

Sighing I put my hand up shushing my mom. “It’s ok mom. I was expecting this. Fine I’ll go.”

****************End flashback*****************

That happened about a year after the incident with Rachael. By that time I realized that it wasn’t helping me keeping that a secret all my life. Yes I knew there would be consequences to telling people, but I just didn’t care anymore. I was really glad that by that time I already had a place of my own set up so I didn’t have to worry about coming back for my things. The only way I would have been able to do it would have been when dad wasn’t there. Because of that incident I don’t really even see mom anymore unless she is visiting Carman and her husband. Mom is very understanding about everything and is still there for me when I need her.

“Well I guess I should get ready so I’m not late.” Knowing Tom this party won’t be too formal. I decide to look nice but not too dressed up, so I pick out one of my favorite outfits. Black leather pants with a hole for my tail, a red silk shirt, a black choker, and my black cowboy boots make up the outfit. Leather has always been one of my favorite things to wear. It always makes me feel more confident, that and I like the restrictive feeling I get when wearing them. Who knows maybe this mystery woman Tom wants me to meet won’t be so bad. I’ll never know till I meet her. Once I get the outfit on I give myself a once over, grab my jacket and head out the door. Little did I know that this would be a night to change my life.
