Tales of the Baron
Chapter 4
The Sunnydale Survivors

We were traveling in an extra long; white stretched limo, and making great time towards our goal. I was looking out one of the side windows when I saw a large road sign that said “Welcome to Gilroy, the Garlic Capital of the World” as we drove pass it, I thought, what a great place to hide out in if you’re trying to avoid vampires. I might be able to use this town as a base of operations in the up coming blood war. This small rural town was located in central California, within a few hours of San Francisco a major supernatural hot spot. I would have my people start researching the area for some real estate. With any luck they might find a Winery or old farm for sale.

But there was time enough for that later, “Tell me again about the last report our agent sent,” I ordered Cassandra, the attractive forty-year-old Mexican woman sitting across from me. She was still wearing the short navy blue business skirt that showed off her nice dark legs and was putting her black lace bra back on after having just given me a very slow and relaxing blowjob. Cassandra is one of my many Coven witches and has served me quite well as the leader of the Coven for this area of the state.

“My Lord, my agent was able to call me from a pay phone early this morning. She didn’t have much time to talk, but what she said was ‘Their witch was going to cast a spell and transform all the potential slayers into real slayers and they were going to enter the Hellmouth and take the fight to the enemy’. She also mentioned that Buffy had some type of mystical weapon and that the vampire Spike was wearing a magical Talisman. But she wasn’t able to get a good look at either of the items or knew where them came from.”

“What else can you tell me about this group?”

“As you read in my reports, they call themselves “The Scoobies”. The group is made up of a middle age Watcher by the name of Giles, a vengeance demon named Anya, a powerful but struggling witch named Willow, Buffy Summers the true slayer, Spike a vampire working with them and a human construction worker named Xander. There are others but these are the core members. My agent was able to gain their confidence and has even seduced one of the core members. This has given us incredible intelligence on them and their inner personalities and conflicts.”

“Which one did our agent seduce?” I asked. Putting extra stress on the word ‘our’ to reminder her that the Coven served me first and foremost.

“The Witch, we knew that Willow Rosenberg is a lesbian and just recently single. She was still heart broken over the death of her lover and very reluctant to get involved with anyone. But our agent was able to gain her confidence and then her love,” Cassandra said being careful how she worded her response.

“How’s our agent Kennedy doing on her first major mission?”

“She seems to be performing very well. Even though she shows limited skill as a witch, her skills as a spy makes her more useful than wasting her as a breeder or marrying her off,” she told me hinting at the fact this girl might have earned herself a rise in status.

“True, and if her latent slayer abilities have been awakened, she may even be promoted to Elite status. In fact if we are successful in gaining control of these new slayers you might have just earned yourself a reward,” I told her, knowing that like most witches in my coven she seeks to improve her rank. I learned long ago that it was easier to use the carrot and stick method of leadership with the Coven, as apposed to the survival of the fittest that I often use with my criminal empire.

“Thank you, my Lord,” she preened, smoothing a lock of her hair.

“Now, give me some details about this group’s dynamics.”

“There’s a lot to go over. First, there’s a struggle for leadership. The Watcher and Buffy have butted heads more than once over what to do or what not to do. Her Watcher seems to be having a problem with Buffy’s struggle for independence and some of the mistakes she has made in the recent past. Plus the fact that she was recently brought back from the dead, that always seems to have an affect on people. Then the dark slayer showed up, and her and Buffy have been at each other’s throats. On top of that…”

“Wait, the dark slayer? Do you mean Faith?”

“Yes, the one and only. Seems that she broke out of jail to help her vampire friend with a problem in Los Angeles. Then made her way back to Sunnydale.”

“Interesting, I always had a interest in her.” In fact I have been monitoring her since she left Sunnydale. I had even sent one of my witches into the prison so that I could keep a close eye on her. I should have been notified that Faith had escaped, someone was going to be punished for failing me.

“As I was saying Master, on top of Buffy and Faith not getting along, the potential slayers have been pushed to the breaking point. Some of them wanted Faith to lead them and some wanted Buffy. Then you have an extremely powerful witch to afraid of herself to use her magic, Spike the vampire now has a soul and mental problems, Xander has lost an eye and Anya has been striped of her demonic powers again. Oh, and there’s another man, a wannabe vampire hunter, who wants Buffy. He and Spike don’t get along very well. But in spite of all their problems they pull together when confronted.”

“Yes, you’re right. They were somehow able to destroy the Hellmouth. So what can you tell me about their current situation?”

“From what I could gather from scrying, they’re holed up in a cheap motel on the edge of town. Most of them are exhausted; they’ve been running off adrenaline for the last couple of days. Some of them are injured and at least two of them pretty bad. And they seem to be close to maxing out their combined credit cards.”

“Sounds like they’re about ready for a change in luck and I think I just might be the friend they need. How soon until we get there?” I asked looking at my watch.

“About ten minutes.”

“Good, enough time for me to make some calls.”

Ten minutes later, we where pulling into the parking lot of a run down looking motel. It was an older, one story L-shape building with peeling blue-gray paint; the sign advertised cheap weekly rates. Taking a quick look out the window I saw a Sunnydale High School bus parked off to the side and a few open hotel room doors. Then I saw a few girls sitting in chairs outside one of the rooms, listening to a small boom box.

I sat in the limo and carefully extended my arcane senses towards the rooms, being careful not to alert anyone inside of my mystical presence. After a few seconds, I knew where the key players were. Willow and Kennedy were in a room away from the others and were enjoying each other’s company in the shower. In another room, two injured girls and an older severely injured black man were being taken care of by a third girl. In another room, I saw a nerdish looking teenage boy and an equally looking nerdish girl watching Star Trek reruns on TV. And finally, I found the leadership of this group in one of the large rooms. Everyone was accounted for except for the two that I hoped would be here. Spike the vampire and Anya the demon, although I knew I could easily recruit them.

“Lets go,” I told Cassandra. She quickly finished reapplying her lipstick and joined me near the door of the limo. We stepped out onto the worn asphalt and slowly walked up to the first room on the left. “Hello, ladies,” I said as we passed a few girls looking at us from one of the open doorways. It looked like three or four of them were crowded to a room.

We reached the door that we wanted and I gave it a quick but strong knock. A few seconds later the door was opened as far as the short, rusty security chain would let it.

“Hi, can I help you?” A tall skinny, dark haired teenage girl asked from the mostly-closed doorway.

“Yes, we’re looking for Buffy Summers,” I said as I motioned to Cassandra standing next to me.

“Can I let her know who’s here?” The girl who I believed was Dawn Summers asked.

“Yes you could tell them ... child protective services,” I said. As the door closed I turned and gave Cassandra an evil smile and quietly said, “That should get them to open the door.”

The door flew open less then a moment later,“Hello, I’m Rupert Giles, I’m the teacher in charge of this field trip. How can I help you?” Came from a tall middle-aged British man, wearing a slightly dirty pair of gray slacks and a white shirt with rolled up sleeves. He reached out and took my hand to shake it then froze when he felt my power. It took a moment, me staring at him and he staring at me for us to realize that we knew each other from many years ago.

I was the first to break the silence, “Ripper, how good to see you after all these years.”

“Giles, do you know this man. Is there something wrong?” said the short blond woman standing in the doorway. There she was, Buffy Summers, even though she wore no make up and was wearing torn jeans and a bloodstained shirt, she was still attractive.

“Yes, I know him. He’s very dangerous. Get Willow.”

“Wait, Slayer, there’s no need. I come in peace,” I said holding up my hands in front of me. “You’re not the only one who has changed over the years, Ripper.”

“I’m no longer Ripper, what is this about?” Giles asked with caution in his voice.

“We need to talk about the future of your girls, Sir,” Cassandra said in a serious voice, trying to break the tension.

“Yes, lets step inside and talk,” I added.

The slayer stepped back from the doorway and allowed me to enter the small cluttered motel room. As I entered, I took note of the young, dark haired man wearing an eye patch with a sword in his hand and the sexy looking dark haired girl aiming a loaded crossbow at my chest. They were standing in the rear of the room next to the bathroom.

“Faith and Xander, I presume. You may put down your weapons. I mean you no harm,” I told them as if I they could hurt me anyway, and looking past them, “The other girl can come out of the bathroom, if she’s done with the phone.”

“Are you with Wolfram & Hart?” Faith demanded.

“Good lords no, not those fools at Wolfram & Hart,” I calmly replied. “No, I’m my own man. I’m not with any group. Well, that’s not entirely true. You could say I’m connected with the Coven,” I said interrupting him.

“Ah ha, you’re with the Coven, I knew it!” Xander exclaimed, then with some embarrassment in his voice asked Giles, who was walking in behind me, “Who’s the Coven?”

“They are a secret society of witches, they mostly study and train the next generation of witches and gather mystical and occult knowledge. They have been around since the eighteen hundreds.”

“I actually started the Coven in 1752,” I said letting them get a small hint of my age and power. I sat down in an empty chair near a small table by the window and waited. The true slayer told the others it was okay and shouted for her sister to come out.
I took a moment for everyone to settle into place. Xander, Faith and Dawn were all sitting down on one of the two double beds, the one furthest away from me. They still kept their weapons near them. Buffy and Giles sat directly across from me on the other bed with Buffy closest to me. Cassandra was close to me, leaning against the narrow wall between the window and doorway.

“Alright, you got our attention. Now who are you and what do you want?” Buffy said, as she looked me directly in the eye.

This girl had balls, not many people can look me in the eye and not be intimidated. I was starting to become intrigued with this vampire slayer. “The quick answer is my name is Erick Modeus and I have come here to help you.”

“Giles, do you know him?” Buffy ask her mentor without taking her eyes off me.

“Yes, I’m afraid I do. I dealt with him during the days of my misspent youth. He’s a Half-Demon, a sorcerer, a warlock, and a crime boss. He calls himself the Baron of Crime and he is the reason I gave up sorcery and became a Watcher.”

“It’s true. I am the son of a Demon Lord, Master of several forms of magic and I do have a lot of underworld connections. But I have also been fighting the supernatural for over six hundred years. I have killed more demons and vampires than you could count.”

Buffy looked at me for a moment, most likely trying to figure me out, “Alright, I’m listening. Now, tell me what do you want. You say you’re here to help. What does that mean?”

“I like you, you get to the point. First, you can join us Witch and bring your friend,” I said looking up into the air where Willow was scrying upon us. “I know who you are, what you did and I am very glad that you succeeded, but I also know that you are unprepared for what lies ahead.”

“What do you think lies ahead, Mr. Badass?” Faith asked with attitude.

I took a few seconds to look at them all then said, “Have you even thought about what you’re going to do next? How you’re going to gather up the hundreds maybe thousands of new slayers? Where you’re going to house and train them? Or are you going to let them run around lose and unprepared, instinctively seeking out evil on their own. Actually, some of them might turn to evil—like Faith did. Or are you going to let some of them put on tights and spandex and play superhero? You are to small of a group; you lack the skills, manpower and resources needed to guide these girls.”

“How many slayers do you think there are?” asked Giles, taking off his glasses.

“I don’t have an exact number, but there are at least four hundred in North America and three hundred or so in Europe according to my sources,” I said with a smile. “I haven’t received the reports on the other America’s, Africa or the Asiatic continent and islands. Third world countries are more superstitious and more likely to hide their secrets.”

“That can’t be possible.” Xander said shaking his head in disbelief.

“I am afraid he might be right,” said the redheaded witch in the doorway. She was slightly taller than her friend Buffy but not as tall as Kennedy standing behind her. “When I evoked the spirit of the First Slayer and activated the potentials I was overwhelmed by visions of other girls from all over the place. I think he’s right, there are a lot more slayers out there than we know.”

I gave them a moment to absorb the information that just hit them.
“Look, I’m offering to help you. I have the people and resources to help you collect all the new slayers. I can provide you with facilities large enough to house them and provide you with people to help train them.”

“What, do you have an army base somewhere?” asked Faith, the dark slayer.

“No, my daughter and son-in-law have a nice large castle in Scotland, it’s somewhat remote and is protected by very strong magics, they would be safe there,” I answered her, but looked at Giles and then over to Buffy and added, “You know I’m right about this. You can barely take care of the twenty or so girls you have now. What are you going to do when there is two hundred or two thousand?”

“What do you get out of this? Why do you want to help us?” Buffy asked.

I could hear in her voice that she was attracted by my offer, but I could tell that she was still overwhelmed and distrusting of me.
“I’ll tell you the truth. I have been fighting demons, vampires and evil cults longer than anybody on this earth. And I still haven’t made a dent. If we are to protect mankind, then I need an army to fight this battle on a larger scale. Do you know that there are almost two hundred thousand vampires in the world? Due to their nature, they’re slowly increasing their number. You can’t slay them all, one at a time. We need an army so we can wipe out whole packs, we need an army so we can go into a city like Los Angeles and clean it out. That’s why it is so important that I help you and not waste this opportunity.”

The room was quiet, I paused for a moment to let it sink in. “Look, you don’t have to decide now, but you have to decide soon on what you’re going to do. Until then, let me help take care of you. I own a nice hotel in San Jose. It’s less than an hour away from here. Let me at least get you out of this … shit hole. You can stay there a week or two until you decide. No pressure. That way all of you can rest and recover and take your time to think about my offer. How does that sound?”

“I have to thank you for your most generous offer, but …” Giles started to speak.

“We’ll take it!” Buffy and Willow both exclaimed at the same time.

“Great, I will instruct my driver to take as many as he can in the Limo and the shuttle-bus from the Hotel is already on its way. I’ll make arrangements to have someone take care of your school bus. I know that you will want to talk among yourselves, so we will go to the hotel to make the final arrangements. But before we leave, we couldn’t help but notice that a few of your team are injured. As a sign of good faith we could heal them. It would make the trip easier for all of you.”

Faith jumped off of the bed and started to speak before any of the others could react, “That would be great, I’ll take you to them.”

The sexy, dark haired slayer led us to the room in which the injured were resting. She didn’t say anything, but by the way she was swaying her hips as she walked I knew I had her interest. After some quick introductions, Cassandra and I started healing them. I let Cassandra heal the large black man whose name was Robin Wood. We found out that his mother was a slayer and a watcher had raised him. I healed the two teenaged girls. The whole time we were doing this, Faith’s eyes never left me. I didn’t even have to read her mind to know that she was attracted to me.

I healed the two girls in such a way that it was somewhat pleasurable. I sent a slow warm wave of mystical energy into their bodies, as I sent soft mental commands into their minds, nothing strong or fancy, just the words ‘Trust’ and ‘Appreciate’. When I was done, I knew that these two would most likely want to accept my offer and I smiled knowing that they would have pleasant dreams of me tonight.

I turned and walked over to Faith who was standing by the door. “Is there anyone else who needs my touch?” I asked in a low, suggestive voice looking into her dark sexy eyes. In spite of her hard outer shell, she was still a woman underneath.

It took her a moment to focus herself, “No, everyone else is fine. Slayer healing and all.”

“Excellent, then I’ll see you at the Hotel,” I said, as I slowly looked down from her face to her hard nipples pressing against her tight white wife beater shirt and then down to the crotch of her tight black leather pants. I then looked her in the eye and gave her a knowing smile as I slowly took a step back, then teleported Cassandra and myself away.

A little less than two hours later, I greeted them as they stepped out of the elevators. “Welcome to the ninth floor, you will be the only guests on this level for the remainder of your stay. All the rooms are the same except for the two rooms by the elevators,” I said backing up and pointing at the two open doors. “This one has been set up to serve as a 24 hour snack bar and mini kitchen and the other as your living room. It has pretty much everything you’ll need; stereo, game systems, a large screen plasma television and a computer should you want to check your email or something.”

“As I promised Buffy, I’m taking care of everything. All your meals in the hotel’s restaurants down stairs, anything you need from the gift shops, you can order room service, make phone calls, whatever you need to make yourselves at home. The hotel staff is aware that you are “Very Special Guests” and will do their best to make your stay enjoyable. Each of your rooms has your name on it and in it you will find some extra clothes. If you have any other needs, Cassandra will be staying in room 1313 on the top floor, for the remainder of your stay.”

I paused for a second, “I have business I must attend to, and so I will let you get settled into your rooms. Oh, by the way, from what I’ve been told there are several nice malls in the area, so if you might want to go shopping. I left an envelope in each of your rooms with a little a thousand dollars in spending money, if you need more see Cassandra.” The words were barely out of my mouth when a stampede of excited teenage girls pushed their way past me and rushed down the hallway towards the rooms.

I smiled at Buffy and her friends, “Relax and get settled in. You’ll be safe here, I give you my word, and when you have a chance we’ll talk about the future.”
