Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Jamie opened her eyes a crack. She felt horrible. Her throat was dry, her head ached, her left wrist throbbed and she could feel something sticking out of her right one. There was a beeping noise from a machine somewhere to her left, and it sounded extremely loud to her sensitive ears. She could tell without looking that there were wires taped er cer c, an, and that she was not wearing her own clothes. She didn't have to look, but she wasn't sure if she would have been able to if she tried, she was so weak.
She opened her eyes a little more and realized she was lying in a hospital bed. The beeping noise was from a heart monitor, and the thing sticking out of her right wrist was an IV. Suddenly, the memories came rushing back to her, flashing in her mind. The knife on her wrist, the blood and the pain, someone picking her up, and she dimly remember someone saying something about closing a wound. She looked down at her left wrist and barely held back a sob. People say that life always has to get worse before it gets better. It will get better, I was just to stupid to see it. She thought, thank God someone was there, they saved me... they saved me.
It was then that she felt something brush her right hand. She slowly turned her head, wincing as she did so, and her eyes widened slightly at what she saw. Who is that boy? No... he's not a boy, he's definitely not a boy. He thought to herself as she studied him. Is he the one who brought me here? He was leaning on the bed, his head pillowed in his arms, his face was turned toward her. Oh! I know him, I go to school with him. What is his name? My head hurts so much I can't think. Is it... Brent, no maybe Ryan? Then his name came to her. "Bryan?" She heard herself ask in a choked whisper.
He stirred for a moment and then his head lifted off his arms, his hair hiding part of his face. They just looked at each other for a moment, and then Bryan stood from his chair. Her eyes followed his movement as he walked toward the door. He only opened the door enough to poke his head out into the hall, and she heard him speak with someone. "Nurse Anne... She's awake."
A woman with graying blonde hair, and wrinkles beginning to show at the corner of her brown eyes, pulled the door open and rushed past Bryan. She came to a stop next to Jamie's bed and looked her over. " How are you feeling?" She asked quietly. Jamie was thankful she was speaking in a voice near a whisper because her head was still throbbing.
"I'm thir" Ja" Jamie managed to croak. She felt like she had swallowed a bucket of sand. "And my head hurts." She said after a short pause.
Anne nodded her head. "I'll get you a glass of water, and I'll ask the doctor if I can give you aspirin. I'm not promising anything though." She said, "I'm glad you are doing better, get some rest now and I will be back with your water as soon as I can." Anne turned away from Jamie and looked at Bryan. "And you! You better sit your ass, and yes I did st agt again, in that chair and stay there. If you move, even one inch, I swear you will wake up with your liver missing."
Bryan plopped down in the chair and looked at Anne. "Promise? I don't know how good my liver is though... smoking's a bad habit." He gave her a lopsided grin, and Anne sighed and walked out of the room, vingving Bryan and Jamie alone.
"Thank... Thank you." Jamie said, her voice still scratchy, though not as much as it had been before. "I... I don't want to think about what would have happened if you hadn't been there."
Bryan just looked at her. He was hunched over, his elbows resting on his knees and he was just staring at her. Jamie was sure that if she had the energy, she would have been fidgeting. Finally, after what seemed like forever to Jamie, he spoke. "Just answer one question for me." He said and she nodded. "Why?"
That one word made Jamie shiver. "Because... Because I was confused and thought it would be the only way for me to make people care. I'm still confused, now more than ever, I don't know how to live. Every day of my life I have wanted someone toe, me, my mom is gone, my dad works all day and then drinks until he passes out at night. I don't want to live like a person just begging for acceptance anymore. The thing is... I don't know how." A few silent tears ran unchecked down her cheeks, "I only know your name, but you cared. You cared."
The last two words were spoken so quietly Bryan almost didn't hear them. He words stirred a feeling down in the pit of his stomach that he supposed was compassion, but what would he know? He usually blocked out all emotions. He was confused too now. This girl, who he barely knew, was stirring feelings inside him that he had thought to be long dead, and he had wanted to keep them that way. Damn her. He thought, but as he looked at her those words, that he kept repeating over and over in his head, lost some of their sting. And, he couldn't help but wonder if that was a good thing. He had been distancing himself from everyone for so long that he wondered if he knew how to be sociable anymore. Damn her. He repeated in his head again, but the annoying little voice in the back of his head told him that he didn't mean it. And, he had to agree.
AN: Oh My God! Another update, I\'m spoiling you people. *All the readers nod their heads and silenagreagree* Sorry, I was planning on making it longer, but I just felt like this was the best place to end this chapter, and, over the years, I have learned to trust my instincts. Everytime I think it\'s going to take me forever to update something happens to make me write faster. For example- two days ago I wasn\'t going to write anything and then I remembered that it was my dog\'s sixth birthday so I was in the mood, and I wrote even though I wasn\'t planning to. Then today, my younger sister, who happens to be the artist of the family, read my story and decided that she was going to draw an anime style picture of the two main characters, so I decided that I just had to write more. The pic\'s not finished yet, but when it is I\'ll tell you where you can find it on the internet. It looks really cute so far! And... I got another review!!! *SQUEE* Okay... There will definitely not be an update tomorrow because I have to go on a field trip with my Biology class... International Museum ofSurgical Science here we come! Any Chicagoans who want to join us feel free... we\'ll be the group of girls watching a portrayal of a Civil War amputation and just looking bored in general
To my other reviewer:
thelittleannoyingone03- you scare me... no I\'m not depressed... and no you can not have Bryan but yes, he is hot
