Chapter 4

Eric Eves: The Choice
is Made

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Night was fast approaching and I
hadn’t made my decision yet. I watched
the setting sun; the colors burned the city sky. Brilliant colors, my last sunset. I had been up all day and now would face my captor, tired and
alone. As the sun sank behind the
horizon and the sky was filled with stars I felt a hand land upon my
shoulder. I spun quickly; afraid of who
I would see there. It was her, e.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Good evening.” She said softly,
“Have you decided?” She asked, gently brushing a hand through my hair.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I bowed my head, “No.”

style='mso-tountount:1'> Quite laughter came from behind her,
“What are his choices Rayne?” A gentle, male voice, said softly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Adair, what are you doing here?”
She asked without even looking to see who was there.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “You are my…partner, so to
speak. Can I not visit you?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “You usually have a purpose when you
come to see me.” She smiled at me and turned to face him, “So what is it this
time? What has our lord requested of
you?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> He shook his head and stepped fully
into my view, “Not what he has requested of me but what he has requested of
us.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I must deal with him first.” Rayne
said, looking back at me.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair smiled at me, his eyes
flashing, “Of course.” He said with a small bow, “I wouldn’t dream of
preventing you from dealing with your…” He paused and scowled, “You have done
nothing to him yet. He is still very
much human.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “He hasn’t made a decision yet.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He has two options.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair smiled, “Make your choice
boy.” He said, “There isn’t much time left for you.” He turned to Rayne, “May I
make the decision for him?” He asked, brushing a fingertip down her cheek and
leaning in close. His lips brushed
against hers, “That is if he doesn’t choose.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She swallowed hard, as I looked at
them in fear, “Yes.” She whispered.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> He chuckled softly, “Well boy, what
do you choose?” He asked, turning to face me.
He flung his ankle length coat back so that he could put his hands in
his pockets, a very human gesture.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I bit my lip, “I’ll…” I stopped; I
wasn’t sure what I wanted.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Well?” I couldn’t find my voice;
there was something about this man, something very wrong, “Cat got your
tongue?” He asked with a laugh.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I looked over at Rayne and she
nodded, seeming to understand how I felt.
Finally I found my voice, “I’ll become a fledgling.” I whispered, my
voice barely audible.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair smiled, “Yes, you will.” He
turned to Rayne, “May I have the honor?
You may still raise him but my blood is stronger.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She looked apprehensive, “I don’t
know Adair.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “He resisted my abilities.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It took him awhile but I believe that my
blood within him would be a better match than yours.”

“You match blood?” I asked softly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair chuckled and removed his hands
from his pockets, “Yes human. In a way
we do. We see who’s blood would be the
best for a particular human. My power
would fit best with you, unlike Rayne’s, whose blood is slightly less powerful
than mine. The abilities that her blood
bequeaths differ from my own. My blood
would be better suited for your mind, your body.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What about my soul?” I asked
softly, unsure if I wanted the answer.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Rayne placed a hand upon his
shoulder and shook her head; he shrugged her off, “What soul?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> We have no soul. That is the one thing taken away in return for the powers that we
gain.” My eyes grew wide, “Don’t look so surprised. Something has to be lost for what we receive.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Adair, you may do it.” She said
softly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> He smiled, “Come here boy.” He said,
holding out his hand. I resisted him with
all my might, I feared this man. Feared
his power, “Do not force me to come get you.” Bowing my head I approached,
“Very good. Now relax.” He said,
wrapping me in his arms.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I felt myself relax without even
realizing what was happening. Slowly he
brought his mouth to my throat. I
cringed as I felt hisath ath upon my flesh.
Taking a deep breath I felt his teeth press against my skin.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I let out a soft cry of pain as he sank his
teeth in. He was sucking on the wound
he had caused, pulling the blood from my perfectly relaxed body.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I felt him pull away then a wound was held
to my parched lips. Hot blood poured
into me, rejuvenating my body. As he
finally released my body I slumped to the ground, unable to move.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Well Rayne.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He shall adapt soon enough.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> In the mean time there are things that we
must discuss.” He said, smiling down at me.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Like what?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “It has to do with Morlock.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She sighed, “That demon?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Why do we have to deal with it?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “We must leave the young one to
speak about this matter, let him adjust to his new form.” Adair said as he took
Rayne’s arm, “Come.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Together they left the room, leaving
me to myself, and my new world. Closing
my eyes I listened to my inner workings.
Everything had seemed to stop.
My heart ceased to beat, my blood no longer flowed, and my breath no
longer came. A choked sob echoed from
my lips. Softly I began to cry, blood
tears flowed freely from my eyes, staining my cheeks. Looking down at my shaking hands I covered my face.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I didn’t know what to think, I couldn’t
fathom what had happened to me. Slowly
I got to my hands kneeknees, trying to get to my feet.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I was weak, I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t
move. I lay on the floor and cried, I
couldn’t stand it. What had I agreed
to? It was an hour before they came
back and by that time I had found my footing and had managed to find my way to
a couch.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I see that you’re up and about.”
Rayne said with a smile, “I’ve decided that Adair would be the better of the
two of us to raise you.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I was speechless, I didn’t know what
to say, “I can tell that you don’t have the words to express yourself.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I look forward to teaching you all that I
know.” He paused, “I want your first taste of your new lio beo be memorable.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Feeding will come but for now I wish for you
to accompany us when we visit the demon, Morlock.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Are you sure that’s a good idea
Adair?” Rayne asked softly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “You gave him to me.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> If you wish to raise him I care not but know
this, you will be breaking laws if you go against your word.” He smiled, “Do
you really want to risk that?” He asked, placing a finger under her chin and
tipping her head up so that she was looking into his eyes, “You know what
breaking our laws means.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She swallowed hard, looking very
human as they stood there, “Yes.” She whispered, “I know.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Don’t worry, I will not go against my word.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> He nodded, “Come Eric.” He said,
hol out out his hand to me, “After we’re done with Morlock I shall take you to
see your sister.” My eyes brightened at the thought, “I thought that would make
you happy. But there’s a catch, if you
misbehave, do one thing against what I tell you then we shall not go see
her. Do you understand?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I nodded, “Yes, I understand.” I
said, thinking of the prospect of finally meeting my sister I forgot what I had
become.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Don’t forget that you are a
fledgling and she a blood slave. She is
lower than you. I don’t care how you
speak to her, how you behave, because you don’t know any better, but she is not
your equal.” He said, his voice calm, as though he were speaking to a child.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I bowed my head, “Very well.” I said
softly as I took his hand and got to my feet.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Slipping on a pair of shoes that
Rayne handed me the three of us left the house. I walked a few steps behind them; feeling depressed, dead to the
world, “Walk with us, not behind us.
Although you are newly made and not quite our equal we are one in the
same.” Adair said softly, without looking back at me.

I hurried to catch up, doing exactly
as he said so that I could see my sister for the first time in my life. style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The bright moon shone down upon us as we
walked through the seemingly empty streets.
I could feel people, sense others.
I didn’t know what they were, I couldn’t tell but there were four very
distinct presences. Ignoring them as
best I could I continued walking.
Finally we stopped before a decrepit building. Above the door was a large black mark, something that I had never
seen before. Adair and I stood back as
Rayne knocked on the door. After a few
moments of nothing the door swung open.
A demon stood in the entryway. I
knew what he was by the large black wings sprouting out of his back.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I knew you would come back Adair
but I didn’t know you’d bring others with you.
Please, come in.” The demon said, stepping aside so that we could
enter. I followed Adair inside, “So who
are the two with you? She looks
familiar but I have never seen him before.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “This is Rayne, a messenger, and
this is my fledgling Eric.” Adair said, introducing us to the demon, “Eric,
this is Morlock.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Hello.” I said respectfully, unsure
of what I should call him, what I should say.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Ah yes, Rayne.style="mso-spacerun:"> "> Not only a messenger, bute yoe you an
enforcer, so to speak. Your partner,
yes?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Yes.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What is it that you have come for?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I remained silent, watching the
demon and the two of my kind go at it was enough for me, “Your crimes still
have not been forgiven, you do know that.
What you don’t know is that there is a way to redeem yourself.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “How?” He asked, interested to
discover a way to get back into someone’s good graces.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “By doing something for the lord and
lady. What we came for is to inform you
of a meeting that you are to attend, if you wish to redeem yourself that is.”
Adair paused, “The meeting is in two days time at the residence of the
lady. Do you understand?”

n
sn
style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Yes, now if you will excuse me I
have to be going. There are things that
I must attend to, just as I’m sure there are things that you need to.” He said,
looking at me as he spoke.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair laughed softly, “I’m sure that
your daughter wouldn’t want you to die so soon after you found her.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> We shall leave though, goodbye Morlock, I
hope you accept their generous offer.” Morlock opened the door and ushered us
out, “That went well. Now then, I
believe that it is time to go see Divan and his blood slave, your sister.” He
said, looking at me. A smile spread
across my face, “He lives near Rayne so we shall spend the day there.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> We walked the rest of the way in
silence, the anticipation of meeting my sister driving me forward, “I’ll wait
for the two of you at home.” Rayne said before leaving us.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair and I continued onward.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Together we approached a large house, just
as beautiful as Rayne’s. Adair walked
up to the door with me close on his heals.
A single rap on the door and we waited.
Adair knocked again when there was no answer. Finally the door opened.
A man stood there with blood on his lips.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Why hello Divan.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> How is the blood today?” Adair said with a
laugh.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Quite good Adair.” Divan said,
licking the blood from his lips. It
seemed to call to me, I desired it, “Who’s the boy?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “This is Eric Eves, your blood
slave’s brother. Apparently he has been
seeking her out so that they could meet for the first time.” Adair said with a
smile, “May we come inside so that they can meet?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Of course, it shall be good for
her. He is your fledgling correct?”
Divan asked as we walked inside.

style='mso-tab-coun> > “Yes.” Adair responded simply.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Divan nodded, “Very good.” He
stopped in a large room, “Avae!” He shouted, “Come to your master.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> A door across the room opened and a
young woman, who looked a lot like me, walked in. Her black hair was down, curls trailing down her back.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> A gown of crimson clung to her slender
form. With head bowed, she entered.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What is it Divan?” She asked, her
voice short, angry. She didn’t sound
very happy.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I would like you to meet Eric, your
brother.” Divan said with a wicked grin.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She blinked twice and looked at me,
“You can’t be. My twin was killed when
my father and mother were, by vampires no less.” She said coldly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I shook my head before looking at
Adair. He nodded once, “It’s not
true. Mother and I survived.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> We didn’t know what happened to you but I
tracked you down, I tried to find you and this is what happened.” I said,
looking myself over, “Mother died last year.” I said softly, “Heart attack.” I
stopped; I was growing hungry and her blood filled form called to me.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Adair, I think he’s hungry.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You just created him, didn’t you?” Divan
said softly as he ran his hands down my sister’s bare arms.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What did you do to him?” She asked,
her voice short, angry.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Adair and Divan laughed, I looked
down at the ground, “He’s a vampire now.
Adair created him this very night.
He must be quite hungry, why don’t you give him a taste of your blood?”
He prom, pu, pushing her forward.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She stumbled into me, “Drink from
her.” Adair ordered, “I know that you’re hungry.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I shook my head, “She’s my sister.”
I said softly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “You don’t have to worry about
killing her, you can’t.” Divan said, “She’s my blood slave and cannot be killed
by feeding.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I’m sorry Avae.” I whispered,
nuzzling her neck.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Just do it.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I’m used to it now.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You don’t have to apologize.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It’s your new nature.” She said coldly.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Taking a deep breath I sank my teeth
into her. Her hot blood pournto nto me,
sating my hunger. After two swallows I
pulled away, almost ashamed of myself.
I had just taken my sister’s blood.
Licking the remainder of it from her throat I pushed her away.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I’m so sorry Avae.” I said softly,
I bowed my head, “So very sorry.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Don’t be.” Adair sneered, “You are
a fledgling and she is nothing more than a blood slave.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You have no reason to be sorry.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I shall teach you how to behave later, right
now don’t say another word without permission.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I nodded, “Very well.” I said
softly, not looking at anyone.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “He catches on quick, unlike his
sister. Shetilltill vicious and
uncontrollable.” Divan said with aet let laugh.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I think he has.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> That’s why I told him that we would come to
see her. I said as long as he behaved
we would come, he behaved exceptionally well.
I believe that he deserved it.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Divan nodded, “Avae, go get ready
for bed. I’ll be up shortly to feed.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I hope to be able to speak with you
again Eric, before being a vampire gets to you.” She said before walking away.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Sighing I closed my eyes, “Well
Eric. Let’s go.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Your first morning is close at hand and we
must return to Rayne’s.” Adair said as he walked towards the door, “Thank you
Divan, we shall see each other at the meeting, yes?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Yes.” He said as we left, “Good
luck Eric. I’m sure that as a reward
Adair will bring you to see her again.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> We reached Rayne’s house and walked
inside, Adair didn’t even knock. He
took me downstairs to a windowless room, “We shall sleep here for today.” He
said, motioning to a set of bunk beds, “Contrary to popular belief we do not
have to sleep in coffins. Take your
pick.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I’ll take the top.” I said softly
as I climbed up the small ladder at the foot of the bed.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Lying on my bed I felt my eyes grow
heavy, sleep threatening to take me.
Finally I let it; I could no longer resist the urge to fall into
darkness. I dreamed, for the first time
in years. Blood, I was surrounded by
it, drowning in it. It was the one
thing I desired, the one thing I craved.
I tossed and turned, twisted, tried to escape it.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It followed me, pursued me.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I screamed and sat upright in bed.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I could feel that it was still morning; my
body was covered in a cold sweat.
Rolling over I closed my eyes and returned to sleep.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> No dreams pursued me then, no blood.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The next night I awakened, feeling refreshed
but very hungry. Slowly I got out of
bed; Adair was still asleep below me.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What have you done to me?” I asked
softly as I looked over the edge at Adair.
His black hair, so much like my own but long, like my sister’s.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It fell over his shoulders, his face.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He looked so human lying there sleeping,
“What have you done?” I asked again as I began my decent.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> With my feet firmly planted on the
ground I walked to the door, determined to escape this place, this man, “Good
evening Eric.” Rayne said from the door.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Good evening Rayne.” I said softly,
depressed that she was there.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What’s wrong?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You seem down.” She asked, “Come, let’s
leave Adair to sleep. We can talk in
the living room.” I was silent as we walked through the house.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I sat across from her on the couch, “So tell
me what’s wrong.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I don’t know what I was thinking.”
I said softly, “I just don’t understand why I said what I did.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Why I agreed to this.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “You made a choice.” She paused,
“You weren’t left with much of a choice.
You made the right decision.” She said, standing up, “You are much
better off this way.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I bowed my head, “I’m not sure about
that though. I just don’t know.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Trust me Eric, you’re much better
off this way. Let Adair teach you what
he knows, leave your human life behind.
That is no longer who you are, no longer what you are.stylso-sso-spacerun: yes"> Listen to him; he has a lot of
knowledge. He has many years of experience.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I nodded, “Why does he sleep so
late?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She laughed soft“He “He has been up
for quite a few days straight. This is
the first time that he has been allowed to sleep in quite awhile.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He’ll be up eventually but for now do you
have any questions? Anything that you
would like to know? I’ll tell you what
I can but I am not allowed to teach you anything, only Adair can do that.” She
said, sitting beside me.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I shook my head, “No.” I said with a
sigh, “Except…”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Except what?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I bit my lip, “I want to know more
about my sister’s condition and about her master.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She nodded, “I can tell you about
that.” She smiled, “Divan is actually a very kind and understanding man.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Your sister is in good hands; she will be
well taken care of. As long as Divan is
with her she shall remain as such.
Divan finds great delight in her, I fully doubt that he will dispose of
her anytime soon.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What do you mean by anytime
soon? I don’t think I like the sound of
that. Do you mean that he’ll get rid of
her?” I asked, shocked at her words.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> She chuckled softly, “He very well
may. It is unlikely though; he hasn’t
had someone like her in a long time.” She paused, “What else do you want to
know?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I bowed my head, “Nothing.” I
whispered, “Nothing. I’m fine.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Are you sure Eric?” She asked,
laying a hand on my leg.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I nodded, “Yes.” I said, getting to
my feet, “Just leave me alone.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I turned my back on her and looked
out the window, “I’m going to check on Adair.” She said softly as she stood and
walked away.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> Soon after she left I heard someone
pad softly toward me, “You’re worried about her, aren’t you?” A voice I recognized
as Adair’s said from behind me. I
ignored him and continued to look out the window, “I understand.” He said
softly, “You will learn, even if I have to use magic to get my point across.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “There is no such thing as magic.” I
said softly, “It doesn’t exist. It’s
only tricks, games played with mirrors and people foolish enough to believe
it.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> He laughed, softly at first then
growing in volume, “Don’t make me laugh.
I have lived long enough to pick up a few things.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I can make the process of the vampiric take
over much faster.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I turned slowly, “What do you mean?”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Your body is being consumed by the
force of vampire blood. Slowly, but
surely, you shall lose all semblance of humanity; your mind and body shall be
that of a vampire. Normally it takes
years but I can make it happen in a matter of a few painful hours.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I had hoped that you would be intelligent
enough to listen to reason but I now believe that I was wrong.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I had hoped that you would relinquish your
claim on human life but I was very wrong about that. Your sister is what keeps your humanity on the surface, I can’t
get rid of that so I may just have to purge you of your human side.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I took a step back, “You can’t be
serious.” I whispered.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “I’m very serious.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> We shall see how I choose to proceed.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Tonight shall be the deciding factor.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “What happens tonight that will help
you decide whether or not to use magic on me?” I asked, genuine fear rich in my
voice.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “We hunt together, we feed, we take
a life.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> I shook my head, “No, I will not
kill anyone. I won’t do it.” I growled,
“You can’t make me Adair.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> He sighed, “My dear boy, you will do
it. If you don’t then my decision is
already made.”

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Go ahead and cast your spells on
me!” I said angrily, “It won’t change the fact that I won’t kill anyone, it
won’t change me!” My voice had risen in volume as I spoke to him, I wouldn’t
take it any more, not from him, not from anyone.

style='mso-tab-count:1'> “Very well, if that’s what you
want.” He said calmly, ignoring my outburst, “We must go home first though.” He
said, walking toward the door, “Let’s go Eric.
You get your wish of seeing true magic.” He smiled, “It won’t be
pleasant either.”

Adair’s
home was the most beautiful I had ever seen.
Three floors, grand picture windows, and beautiful balconies made up this
ancient masterpiece. I stood outside
gazing at the building before me. It
hadn’t fully set in what I had said, what I had done. Adair wouldn’t let me forget though; he pushed me forward,
causing me to stumble. Catching myself
I continued onward. The door opened
before me, a young woman greeted us.
Her golden hair was carefully coiffed; her sapphire eyes gazed at us
solemnly as we walked in.

“Thank
you.” Adair whispered to her as we entered, “Do not let anyone in, I must deal
with my child.” She nodded and was rewarded with a gentle kiss, “Thank you once
again my dear.” He walked towards me, “Downstairs.” He ordered, that single
word held so much power, so much malice.

At this
point in time I could tell that he hated me.
Hated me for not doing as he commanded.
I didn’t care; all that I cared about was not killing anyone.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I refused to do as he said but at this point
I had no choice. As I stood at the top
of the stairs I refused to go. He
shoved me, forcing me downward. I
stumbled down the stairs, taking one step at a time, trying to avoid my
inevitable fate.

“Don’t
test my patience.” He said softly, “This spell takes time, we still have to
feed when this is over. Hurry up.”

I picked
up the pace; still not wanting to go but something drove me onward.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs he
pointed to a wall. I walked over and
stood with my back against it. He
strode over and, taking my left arm first, chained me there, my arbovebove my
head. Turning his back to me I saw him
rummaging around in a small chest. When
he faced me he had a curved dagger in hand.
My eyes grew wide as he approached.

Running
his free hand down the blade he spoke, “Spirits of the dark, spirits of the
night, purge the humanity from this vampire’s body.” As he spoke the blade
began to glow. Spinning the blade
around he held it to my heart, “Purge the past from his body and mind.” I tried
to get away from the blade, “Silence his inner turmoil.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Remove from him the human emotion that has
long sat within his form.” Slowly he began to slice the shirt from my body,
“Allow the vampiric blood to consume him.” As he spoke he made the final cut,
my shirt fell from my body, “Remove the human soul.” He whispered as he began
to cut into my skin, lightly grazing my flesh.
Tiny rivulets of blood flowed down my pale chest, “Purge this body.” As
the blade continued it’s fatal dance I felt pain begin to flow through my body.

“No
more!” I shouted as the pain was amplified ten fold.

He
ignored me, “Cleanse his mind.” He whispered, drawing the blade across my
forehead.

A shot of
fire like pain went through my head as the blood began to flow, “Please, I’ll
do anything.”

He was
silent as he continued to make his marks.
A lightning bolt of agony shot through me and I felt myself melt away.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Then it was gone, there was nothing.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I was floating in a sea of eternal bliss,
surrounded by darkness. I turned,
searching for an answer. As I turned
back around I was faced with myself. My
eyes grew wide as I stood toe to toe with my own form.

He half
smiled at me, “Welcome.” He said.

“Where am
I?” I asked softly.

“Inside
your mind.” He replied, “The spell that’s being cast will strip you of your
humanity, you.” He said pointing at me, “When that happens it’s my turn.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I’m the new you, the vampire you.” He said,
brushing a hand through his hair, “I would have slowly taken over, implanted
myself in your life, but thanks to my sire, Adair, I don’t have to worry about
that any more. He’s given me life, now
he shall give me my full existence.”

“What
will happen to me?” I asked softly.

His smile
grew, “Dissolve, fade away. You will no
longer be a part of me.” He pointed to my feet, “See, it’s already begun.”

I looked
down. My feet were fading fast, “How can
it be stopped?” I asked softly, “If you know, please tell me.” I begged.

“There is
no way. Once it has begun it cannot
end. The minute you sealed yourself
within your mind there was no going back.” He paused and looked me over,
“Goodbye Eric.” He held out his hand, “Take my hand.” He said softly.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I took it and felt myself enter into
him. I was now looking from his eyes,
gazing at my dissolving form, “Goodbye.” I sneered.

“Please,
you can’t.” He whispered as he was almost completely gone.

I shrugged,
“Too bad. eyes.

I fell
out of darkness and into my body.
you feel?”

“Thank
you.” I whispered, “Thank you for removing that…” I paused, “Spirit from me.” I
flexed my hands as Adair removed the chains.

He
smiled, “Well then, shall we hunt or do you need time to adjust?”

I tapped
my chin thoughtfully, “I think I should get cleaned up and dressed before we go
anywhere. What should I wear?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Do you have something I could put on and a
place I can bathe?”

He
chuckled, “Yes, of course. Back
upstairs, take a right, last door on the left.
I’ll bring you something more suitable then what Rayne gave you.”

“Thank
you.” I said, walking up the stairs, savoring the new sensations flowing
through my body.

My first
time fully in control, I should have done this sooner, like when I was faced
with feeding from my sister. Of course
nothing could be done about that now. ">
Walking into the bathroom I finished stripping and turned the water
on. Stepping into the shower I closed
the curtain, pulling the little nub on the faucet up I basked in the hot
water. There was no humanity left in
me, no spark of life. That weak,
pathetic human me was long gone from this world. As I washed the blood from my body I closed my eyes, feeling my
essence fill the deepest recesses of my form.

“Well
Adair.” I whispered, “You don’t have to worry about that fool any longer, I
shall do exactly as you say and listen to the knowledge that you have to
impart.”

“That’s
good.” Adair said with a quiet laugh.

I
chuckled softly, “I have a lot to learn, I didn’t even hear you come in.”

“Clothes
are on the counter. I’m sure you can
find a towel for yourself. Meet me in
the entry hall when you’re done.” He said, then was gone.

I
finished my shower soon after he left.
Drying off I got dressed in the clothes that he had given me.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Every article of clothing he gave me was
black, fitting sense I was dead. There
were no shoes to go with my ensemble so I figured that he would have some for
me to wear. Spiking my hair I was
finished and content with the way that I looked, although a jacket would be
nice. Shrugging I left the bathroom and
returned to the entry hall. Adair stood
waiting with a black leather jacket over his arm and a pair of boots in hand.

“Put
these on then we can be off. "> I’m
thinking about going to the auction tomorrow night to get you a companion.” He
said as I pulled the boots on. I
scowled, “You don’t like the idea? It
would be someone you could spend your time with when I’m not here to teach
you. The two of you would be able to
explore this world together.”

“I was
bought at the auction.” I said softly, “That was an experience that I will
never forget.”

He
nodded, “I understand. The auction has been going on for centuries, buying,
selling, all of it human. Human flesh
is an integral part of our lives, Eric.
Just as humans buy and senimanimals for food we buy humans.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> They’re cattle, nothing more than that.” He
said as I sank into the jacket. I bowed
my head, “Don’t worry about it.”

I brought
my head up, “Let’s go hunt. I’m rather
hungry.” Adair smiled and together we left the grand house.
