The Test
Chapter 4: The Test
Rorie woke up when a splash of freezing cold water hit her in the face. “It’s time to get up,” Ray giggled. Trella quickly used her Windstress power to dry Rorie’s sodden face. “You’d better hurry todatoday’s your Seraphate test” Trella scolded in her most motherly voice. The four girls had fallen in to a pattern during the last few pints. Trella played the role of the mother. She would scold the girls and urge them to study. May was looked upon as the little sister who followed Rorie and Ray around and tried her best to drive them to madness. But during all of this Rorie and Ray were taking every chance they got to be alone. The past few days, however, had been hard because Rorie had spent them studying for her Seraphate Exam. She was the youngest student in history to be deemed ready to take the exam. The test was very very difficult and lasted for a few days. It would test her knowledge of facts and history as well as test her powers. She had studies hard all of her life for this moment and would not accept a failing mark.
Rorie walked down a long dark set of stairs that lead to the dungeons. They were lit with enchanted torchest flt floated in the air about every 90 paces. She was very nervous and could hardly keep from turning around and heading back. Rorie could feel her stomach fluttering and felt as if she might be seeing her breakfast again. She reached the bottom step and held up her map to see which way to go. She took the corridor to the right and headed down another long flight of stairs. There were many fewer torches here and it became colder the farther down she ventured. At the end of the stairs there was a solid stone wall. Once again she reached into her pocket to withdraw the map. After consulting the crude drawings and sloppy writing on the parchment for w miw minutes she withdrew her wand from inside her standard school bag. She tapped the wand against the stone seven times and then whispered in a choked voice “it begins.” The solid wall folded in on itself with a loud crackling sound. The sound you hear when dry leaves are tossed into a roaring fire. It revealed a stone archway and yet another dark flight of stairs. She held her nose high into the air, swept her raven hair back, and strode off down the stairs. At the bottom she reached a huge pair of wooden doors. Each had her name burned into the paneling above the knob. The doors looked ancient. She took hold of the knobs and turned. A blinding light burst through as the doors swung inward. She waited a few moments to let her eyes adjust to the light and proceeded into the room. Many who were to test for Seraphate never even made it into their specified room without collapsing from the spells that waited for them. Rorie let herself relax a little. She had never even felt any charms or spells on the way down. This may not be too difficult.
She looked up and around the room. When she realized what she was seeing she gasped out loud. She turned back to where the doors had been as if to run away. The doors were gone. Rorie gazed around the room. She was standing on the top of a hill. Every direction she looked to gave the same frightening sight. She was in the center of a huge maze. A labyrinth of twists and turns and obstacles. She could see a river that would have to be crossed. A dense forest and multiple mountainous hills and trees that would have to be conquered. Little did she know that at the same moment her three best friends were each positioned in separate parts of the maze.
