Chapter 38 – Christmas Day
“I’m sorry Mrs. Inperiaru, I am going to have to take your husband and your son down to the police station, well they will be awaiting bail,” Officer Pop said to Fuji as kindly as she could muster. “However, you may have your daughter.”
Fuji wasted no time going to the door of her house and rushing out where another officer was opening the door and allowing the littlest Inperiaru out of the car and to hit the ground running. Fuji had never been so glad to see her daughter. Rhapsody ran over to her mom happily and jumped into her arms, nearly barreling Fuji’s figure over into the officer standing behind her, but the kind officer steadied them both and kept them standing as they clung to one another.
“I’m sorry, Mom,” Rhapsody cried into her mother’s chest.
“Why are you sorry?” Fuji asked perplexed.
“I don’t know,” Rhapsody admitted, “but I didn’t know what else to say.”
Fuji laughed, cried, and hugged her daughter close. It took her a few moments before she registered that her husband and son were still in the car, captives for the police until they sorted out the mess of… “What happened out there?”
Rhapsody turned a bright shade of red, ashamed of her behavior, and the moments before Ashe’s return, but Fuji did not wait for an answer. She rushed over to the car, leaving Rhapsody to the care of Yuki and Shai, who brought Rhapsody back inside. The police began to push Fuji back, explaining that they were about to drive away, but Fuji insisted all she wanted to do was see that the men in her life were okay. The police nodded and rolled down the windows just slightly, after being bribed heftily, so she could see both Amatsu and Ashe.
“Ashe,” she cried, and for a moment Ashe would have thought she was happy to see him as she clung to the slightly open window. “You… why… Oh my God, are you all right?”
“I’m… I’m fine,” he lied through his teeth. He was far from fine, and had been far from fine for months. He had definitely not thought his plan far enough through, and being as spoiled as he was he had not realized the cost of living the way he was used to. He had foolishly run out of cash months ago, and had fallen with the wrong crowds, and done more of the wrong things. The whole reason he had truly returned home was because he no longer knew what to do with himself, the reason he had the gun was for protection on the street, and the reason he shot Devilin… well, he was fucking a fourteen-year-old girl. His little sister, love, or not, he was fucking a girl. A little girl. Ashe was enraged just thinking about it.
“Ma’am, we have to drive away,” the policemen were telling her.
“Amatsu, look after him,” she said and glanced towards her husband, who was grinning like a maniac. She wondered why he had not tried bribing a bit himself to get them all out of trouble, but he had been in trouble with the law before. He knew how these things tended to work.
“Yes, honey,” he said obediently, still with his wicked grin that said nothing and everything.
While Fuji watched them take her husband and son away, her son disappearing out of her life for hopefully the last time, Rhapsody was being lead back into the mansion where all of the others sat waiting. Shinwa had his hand on Yuna’s shoulder, firmly, and she looked awful sitting there with air dried hair. Hair done that much with product should never be air dried. Waza was sitting next to Yuna, but a few feet over, and Shinwa had him tightly by the shoulder as well. Neither child looked particularly happy.
The first people to greet Rhapsody were Sora, Shu, and Harmony, and she wondered, bitterly, to what purpose, but she allowed them to hug her and fawn over her before Bliss and Tiera pushed them out of the way, checking over the smallest, and youngest, thoroughly while Shai tried to shoo everyone away, explaining that Rhapsody did not need all of their attention right now, she needed to talk to Officer Pop, who still sat patiently waiting for everyone to greet her. Darrke gave Rhapsody a little wave, Danko looking relieved in the background, and Link looking displaced. Rhapsody walked over to Officer Pop, gave a small traditional Japanese bow, and said, “I’m ready,” and was lead away into a room where no one could describe her statement but her.
