Dancing

Chapter 38 – Dancing

“It is way too cold to be standing out here,” Fuji complained in the alleyway at the back of the club. Danko stood, not at all feeling the cold of the winter bite, while Fuji, dressed in a short tank and a pair of pants that were nearly diaphanous, was freezing. If it was not for Devilin, his arms securely around his girlfriend, Fuji would have frozen already. “What happened in there? What did that man say to you?” Not that Fuji had been enjoying herself much in that club. It had started off well enough, but the night seemed to have gone bad for all of them.

They had walked in earlier that evening with every intention of just enjoying themselves. Danko did not seem to mind being a constant third wheel, and Devilin and Fuji did well to make her feel welcome without feeling too welcome. That one time was a fluke, and Fuji had no intentions of letting it happen again. Something in her snapped and she started reverting back to herself. Danko had not noticed, still remaining the perfect antagonist in Fuji’s life, while Devilin had noticed the slight changes and taken them in stride. He adored Fuji for who she was, not what she offered him, and the three of them together looked like trouble, when really Danko was the only one constantly causing trouble. Tonight seemed to be no different.

Devilin had twirled Fuji onto the dance floor, Danko beside them, and the three of them danced to the trance-like beats of the songs. Fuji enjoyed the movement while Devilin enjoyed being that close to her moving body. It was not long, however, before Danko offered to go and grab a few drinks. Fuji was grateful for something, something non-alcoholic, and Danko smiled and went to find something for them. While she was gone Fuji looked across the dance floor, and to her utter dismay she spotted Amatsu on the dance floor. He was smiling, not at all looking like he missed her even an inch, and beside him was the girl she had seen him with on the day they had broken up. Shiira. They were both smiling and he was leaned in close to her, whispering something into her ear. Fuji literally felt ill to her stomach watching it and hurried to turn away from the happy couple. It should not bother her like that, she was with Devilin now, who was right in front of her holding her tightly.

“Don’t let it bother you,” he told her sweetly and for that Fuji felt even worse. There was Ex-Boyfriend standing across the room and she was hating herself for not being with him while Current Boyfriend was being the sweetest man on the planet. She was scum, she knew it, but she did not want to see him that happy without her. She was not sure if it was longing or just jealousy that he looked so carefree while she was still struggling through to find out who she was.

“Where’s Danko?” she asked, happy to change the subject. She looked around the dance floor for the tall girl, while Devilin did the same. It actually took a second to recognize Danko looking a bit threatened, and dwarfed. She had never looked so small in her life standing beside the three men who positively towered over her, leering at her in a way that let Fuji know they knew she was female, which most people did not know at first glance of Danko, especially if they had seen the way Danko had been clinging to Fuji during one of the dances.

“Who are they?” Fuji heard Devilin ask. What surprised her is that he did not have the answer. She did not have the answer either, where did that leave them?

Devilin, never one to be kept in the dark about anything, made his way through the dance floor towards Danko, his hand tightly gripped to Fuji’s, bringing her along whether she wanted to go with or not. They reached the group and the one man, the tallest, the one the least interested in Danko, looked towards Devilin and Fuji. His eyes fell on Fuji, hungry for something that Fuji recognized right away. She found herself hiding herself behind Devilin, who was very willing to act like her protector though he was nearly a foot shorter than all three men.

“I see you are hanging with a different group now, Danko,” the one man laughed, blowing cigarette smoke into Devilin’s face. “You always do find the prettiest of girls.” The man leaned to the side and smiled at Fuji with a tender, “Hi,” that made Fuji take a step back and away from him. Something about this man made her skin crawl.

What she did not see was from across the club Amatsu’s eyes had fallen upon them, and he was ready to pounce on the man that was ready to make Fuji crawl out of her skin and leave it behind to escape.

“What do you want?” Devilin snapped, jumping to the ready to protect the two women in his life.

“I’m here to talk to Danko,” the man said. “I did not know it was a crime to talk to women in a club now.”

“She does not seem to want to talk to you,” Devilin said, “so I think we will be walking away now.” He reached his other hand out to Danko, which she took in her moment of weakness. Her eyes locked with Fuji’s and they shared a look that promised that Fuji would not say a word. As the three turned to leave the men stepped over and yanked Danko away from Devilin. Before Devilin could react the man had said what he wanted to so that only Danko heard, and then he released her, practically shoving her out of his way as he walked away. It was then that she said she needed air and the three of them went into the alley behind the club.

“I just think we should go,” Danko said gruffly, finally retaining her normal self again, “before they come out here and start looking for us.”

Danko began walking away before any of them could react, and Devilin and Fuji hurried to catch up with her, walking onto the streets of the worst part of town. This was the part of town with the love hotels and the brothels, not just the clubs and the women selling themselves and the drugs constantly being pan handled. Inside the club a person was relatively safe, out on the streets it was a different story.

Fuji clung to Devilin’s hand and Devilin squeezed it back to give her reassurance that he was there to protect her, but protecting her would be hard when it seemed the three men were determined to make their night miserable. As they walked around to the front of the building from the back exit the three men who they had encountered in the club were waiting for them, obviously having exited the front before hand.

“Don’t leave yet,” the man who seemed to be the one in charge said, opening his hands wide as if he was defenseless. The way he had Danko skittering Fuji highly doubted this man was someone they wanted to play games with tonight.

“Sorry, I have a curfew,” Devilin blurted out, pulling both girls with him and turning his back on the three men as he walked away. It was probably not the smartest thing they could have done that night, the three men following them down the street and waiting until they were out of sight of the club to pick the fight. Fuji tried to tug on Devilin’s hand, to warn him that leaving the sight of the club was a mistake, but he was determined to lead the girls out of this mess. He sensed the impending danger; he just had to admit to himself he had no idea what he was doing.

“Danko, you still owe us, you know,” came another voice, a higher pitched voice than the leader of the three, but a voice that Fuji would never forget. It was a voice that came to women in nightmares. Fuji scooted away from the shorter man as he came up behind her. “I think this girl will pay off your debt perfectly.”

Danko whirled around, pushing Fuji and Devilin aside to keep both of them away from the three men. She went head to head with the three men, and Fuji could already see she was going to lose. Fuji looked around for any sign of help, but people were quickly running into hotels and brothels. They were used to fights down this straight, and they were not going to be caught in the middle of a fight that was not their own. “Leave her alone,” Danko growled, “she was not involved.”

Fuji stepped back, suddenly remembering something Yuki had told her back when Kaori had been deported to America. Danko had used three men to have sex with Kaori, and she had video taped it, with the help of Kago. From there Danko had used the tape to have Kaori deported, and never revealed the three men. Fuji was betting anything these were the three men.

Fuji stepped forward, a little shakily, using Devilin as support, who tried to pull her back, but Fuji (almost) knew what she was doing. “What does Danko owe you?” she asked. “I’ll pay off her debt for her.”

“Oh, you will?” the lead man asked, arching one cocky eyebrow. “That is very generous of you, and I think you would make an excellent fuck.”

“Er…”

“Shut up Fuji,” Danko hissed. “She’s offering you men money, not her body, like I said, she’s not involved.”

“But you promised us something, didn’t you Danko, since your poor ass couldn’t pay the debt?” the man continued. “You took away the play toy you were going to give us.”

“That was after I found out what disease you are carrying and spreading to the people you fuck,” Danko snapped. “You sick bastard, trying to give innocent girls some disease just because you are bitter.”

Disease? Why did this make sense to Fuji in a very sick way? All she knew at that moment was she wanted to run away. She knew trouble when she saw it, and could find no other way to escape it.

“Are you willing to take your friends place, still?” the man asked, leaning over to look over at Fuji. “Danko did not seem to mind what we did to her, all in exchange for our silence when it came to the things we knew because of Kago. Of course, you would be preferable over Danko any day.”

“Let’s go,” Devilin snapped, grabbing both Fuji and Danko and beginning to pull them away. “This isn’t a time for this.”

“I don’t think so,” snapped the leader, who seemed to do most of the talking. “I hate to tell you this, but we aren’t leaving until Danko has paid her debt. Kago paid his, now it is time for her to pay hers.”

Before Fuji could blink the first fist was flying, and she could not remember if it was Devilin or the other man, but either way she was knocked off her feet swiftly, one of the members grappling to keep HER down. What good was she going to be in a fight besides to kick with her four inch heels and hope for a vital spot? Which she tried her hardest to do. They did not seem to be trying anything but to keep her down as they attacked Devilin and Danko. It was two against two, but these men had weight lifting and experience over Devilin and Danko, and though Devilin was muscular he could not protect Fuji and Danko while trying to have a real fight. Fuji let out a scream and was going to bite the man above her when the word ‘disease’ floated through her mind. Danko did not mention which disease what it was, what if it was something she could contract from biting him?

They were losing, and Devilin and Danko were being pummeled, and Fuji tried to remember how she came to this situation. She fought her hardest without fighting too hard, her fear taking over her limbs and freezing them up.

She did not see it happen, she just remembered suddenly being free of the body on top of her and hear a loud ‘crunch’ noise that had her shuddering though she did not know what just broke. She tried to stand, wanting to hurry and save her boyfriend and friend, but her legs would not listen to her. She was still shaking from being attacked, reminiscent of a time when things had ended much worse. She looked up and was surprised to see her hero was the same man who had been her hero before, and then she could barely see through her tears.

Like the angel of mercy a coat fell around Fuji’s shoulders and Amatsu was helping her stand. Kyoei, Shiira, and two men that Fuji did not recognize were helping Devilin and Danko stand. The three men who had attacked them were lying out along the ground, beaten thoroughly and trying their hardest to crawl away.

“Come on,” Amatsu said, “let’s get you kids home.”
