Chapter 36
Paige gently laid Dylan down in a crib that had been provided for him. She didn't even care where it had come from. The gesture was much appreciated. It had seemed a lifetime since she had been with her son. It had been a very long couple of days. She couldn't believe that it was November already. Halloween seemd so far away now. So much had happened.
Brant came up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders, giving them a soft squeeze. "He's going to be alright. He's a tough boy." He told her. Paige didn't move for a few moments. Then she slowly turned in his arms and wrapped her's around him and held him tightly. Brant slid his arms around her shoulders and rested his head against the side of hers. It took him a few seconds to realize that she was crying.
"What is it?" Brant asked her. Paige grabbed handfulls of his shirt and held onto him, shaking her head against his chest. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, that's just it." She pulled her head back so that she could look into his eyes. "I'm used to having to watch my back for fear of being hurt. At being at Tyler's will when ever he wanted. I don't have to worry about that here, and yet I can't help thinking when it's all going to come crashing down. When will the good gestures go away and be left with what these people are really like." She told him.
"Paige, you know me. I am no more evil than you are. Neither are my people. We take pride in the fact that we do not gourge out on human blood or take lives when ever we want. Maurice is the kindest master that I have ever had and I am honored to be in his kiss. I wouldn't want to be in any other one. You and your people will be safe here, so will Dylan. But to ensure our safety, we have to help ensure theirs. We cannot do this without them, and they cannot win this war without our help. It is a double edged sword, but it is the way that it works. I promise you that nothing will harm you here. None of them will, it's not how they do things. " Paige looked at him and took a deep breath.
She knew that all of this was true. But she had just lived so long fearing for her life that she still was. Even now as he was reassuring her, she was still in fear. But not only for herself, now for her son. She would raze hell from under her before she would let anything happen to him. She turned away from Brant and looked down at Dylan. He had fallen asleep almost immediately. Brant put an arm around her shoulders and gently ran his thumb down Dylan's cheek. He led her away from the crib to sit on the bed.
"Do you trust me?" Brant asked her seriously.
"Of course I trust you, why wouldn't I?" She replied. Brant turned his eyes away from her to look back at Dylan through the wooden bars of the crib. "Give him to Kyleigh and let us send them away." He said, his eyes still not looking at her.
Paige sat there dumbfounded. What was he talking about? She had just been reunited with her son, she was not about to send him away again.
"How could you suggest something like that to me?" Her voice sounded so hurt. It caused Brant to look at her again. He reached out and held her face between his hands gently.
"I love you, Paige, and I love that child. But if we are about to have war then he will not be safe here. Tyler will want to find him and take him from you. By now he has to know that you were actually pregnant. Kyleigh will not be able to defend herself either, sending them both away to be guarded by our people will keep both of them alive, even if something should happen to us. At least he will be safe." Paige's eyes started to fill with tears. She knew that he was right but that didn't change the fact that it meant sending her son away. "You know that I'm right." He said.
"I know," She said softly, dropping her eyes. Brant turned her face so that she was looking at him. He leaned forward and brushed his lips across hers. Instantly she felt a little better, he always had that effect on her. Her hands grabbed his wrists and guided his hands down her body to rest at her waist. Brant pulled her closer to him and put more force into the kiss. Paige slid a hand up his back until she had a handful of his hair.
Brant shifted his body until he was on his knees and slowly laid her back against the bed. If this was going to be the last night that the two of them might have together then he wanted to make sure that it was going to be the best night of their lives. He needed her to know exactly how much he cared for her and how much he needed her.
