Chapter 37 – Christmas Eve – Part 6
“Stop the car, Ashe!” Rhapsody screamed as she tried to hurry into her seatbelt in the passenger side, but instead found herself nearly plastered against her door as Ashe made a hard left hand turn that had her struggling to remain seated. Ashe barely seemed to be listening to her as he skidded over ice away from the mansion, Amatsu in the pink car right behind them. “Ashe, it’s Dad, just stop the car, he won’t do anything, he just wants to see you.”
“Rhapsody, I just shot someone, stopping is not an option,” Ashe snapped at her, his usual patience for the younger girl gone.
“What are you going to do, drive all of the way to Mexico?” Rhapsody snapped. “By then they will have enough barriers up to stop us.”
“No, Canada’s closer,” Ashe said bluntly.
“And what about Dad?” Rhapsody snarled, her anger rising to the surface for one of the only times in her short life. “Are you going to just let him follow us until one of us runs out of gas? Are hoping it is him first so you can escape?”
“You know what, I don’t need this from you,” Ashe spat, his eyes glaring at Rhapsody as long as he could keep his eyes on her. “What the Hell was going on with you and Devilin?”
“You know, most family reunions are happy, covered in tears and bemoans of, ‘I’ve missed you, I can not believe you are alive!’ And instead you turn into a cretin and start accusing me. I was doing the same thing with Devilin I used to do to you.” Rhapsody flinched as Ashe’s hand raised, but he did not strike her, though the veins were tense with the need. “He was raping me,” Rhapsody continued, “the same you used to do.”
“Why didn’t you scream for help?”
“Because you took away all of my confidence!” Rhapsody cried. “You raped me of it for weeks before you ‘died’. And then… you died, I could not even confront my nightmares.”
“What nightmares?” Ashe nearly yelled at her. “What the Hell do you know about nightmares, you pampered, spoiled, princess? Do you know why I chose to break you? Because it would hurt mom and dad. And it worked. Mom hated me, she was ignoring me in the end and when she did speak to me she was threatening to send me away because the evidence was there, and just as she was regretting her attitude towards me, just as she was beginning to feel guilty for the way she treated me, I died. Horrible, she never had the chance to say I’m sorry.”
Ashe never saw it coming. He saw his sister as a weak creature, she probably always had been until he chose to tell her that he was using her. For some reason, despite all of the things he had done to her, and despite the fact that he had truly wanted her but had not wanted to tell her that truth while he was spitting nails, Rhapsody was most angered by being use. Her fist was fast, her entire body faster. She was lithe, and despite the curves, she was small, and able enough to slide into the driver’s seat and slam on the breaks with the heels of her pumps, digging them deep into Ashe’s foot as he yelped in pain, twice, and the car went screeching to a halt, nearly throwing her through the window, but Ashe’s arms acted as a seat belt. For a moment they just sat there, breathing heavy and unable to comprehend the last couple of seconds that had sped by.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Ashe finally yelped, his arms still protectively around her body, shielding her from the damage of oncoming cards that may or may not decide to crash into them at any moment. They had swerved across two lanes of traffic, and the biggest problem was one was coming and one was going. She had seemed to equally have wanted to make all of the lanes slow down. It was a miracle with the ice no one had slid into them yet.
Rhapsody’s head hit the steering wheel and she began to sob. Ashe, at a loss between feeling the need to try to comfort her, and trying to regain control of their vehicle so they are not in Death’s way in the blackness of night on an icy road, just kind of sat there and waited for her to say something.
“Everyone loves you,” Rhapsody sobbed. “Dad misses you, Mom misses you, Harmony is torn apart-”
“Because of how I left,” Ashe growled. “Can’t you see this is what I wanted to happen? And now they won’t have you anymore, either. I’ve destroyed the Inperiarus.”
“No,” Rhapsody said, her eyes clearing of tears a little as she leaned slightly to her left, “you’ve only managed to destroy yourself,” and to his utter amazement she was rolling out of the driver side door and into traffic, but she was not alone in the cold of night, for a darker figure inhabited the door, pushing her to the side so she stood away from the cars and on the sidewalk near the roads, but looming before Ashe angrily.
Amatsu reached his hand through the car door and pulled his son out with such force and shook him so hard Ashe, for a moment, was stunned, but when he saw the fist coming, for a second time tonight, to crash into his skull he reacted back. That was when Officer Pop pulled up, her huge grin on her face as she told everyone to put their hands up in the air. Amatsu still managed to sucker punch Ashe, who had his hands up, Pop was not sure if she wanted to laugh, or to shoot them both.
