Chapter Thirty-Four: Compromise

--

In walked Lavan and Tonisha.

The hunter froze. He eyed the captain. A low growl escaped him as Tonisha peered over his shoulder.

“Cain?” she gaped.

“What are you doing here?” Lavan asked.

“Don’t, Lavan,” Edie said, stunning the captain, hunter, and inn owner. “I asked Tonisha to get him for me. He needed to know that I’m pregnant.”

“But -- why?” Lavan grumbled. He sounded immature, but Cain’s very presence could not make him feel bad for thinking in such a manner. He knew that Edie felt otherwise.

“Because he could be the father,” she pouted. “Neither of you should be left out.” She sniffed as she looked down. She wiped at her eyes. She would not cry in front of them. They all had to figure this out. They had to keep their triangle balanced.

Lavan huffed. He looked down, not wanting to look at Cain. Cain was copying him. He eyed the wall, suddenly finding a small dent very fascinating.

Edie eyed the two. She growled lowly, knowing that getting them to come to a compromise was going to be difficult. The events which had played during her start at the Pig’s Thigh Inn had been nothing she had expected. She had become one of many star talks of town, and her glorious meals had impressed thousands of people. Not only that, but she had met some friendly faces, and some not so friendly faces. She had met the charming, hilarious Lavan. And she was reintroduced to Cain, a nightmare from her past who magically transformed into a dazzler.

And deep down, Edie knew that she cared greatly for both of them.

Moving the covers off of her fragile frame, Edie slowly got to her feet. She wobbled a bit, groaning from standing up too fast. Both Cain and Lavan rushed to her side, prepared to aid her. They each took one of her pale arms. As they did, they glared each other down. But Edie was blushing. She smiled at them as Tonisha stood back, eyeing her oddly.

“Cain -- Lavan,” she started. “I -- do like you both. And I want you two to promise me that -- that no matter what, you’ll both stay away from each other -- unless you are here with me.”

Blinking, Lavan stared down at Edie as if she were crazy. “What?”

“Please break up the challenge you made,” Edie pleaded. She eyed them, showing them her best sad face. She hoped that it’d work like a charm. “No -- more fighting…”

“If this is what you want,” Cain stated. “Then we won’t -- if Lavan agrees?”

Sighing, and nearly grumbling, Lavan nodded. “Fine.”

“Good,” Cain grinned. “Challenge is broken.”

Relieved, Edie slowly sat back down. She was feeling happier than she had for the longest time. And Tonisha noticed this. Edie was shining brilliantly. Tonisha had not seen her that happy in -- well -- the five weeks that Cain had been away. And now, with him in the room, Edie was herself again.

“Well…” Tonisha whispered low enough for her ears only. She lightly smiled.

At that moment, Edie placed her hands onto her stomach. She massaged it gently, and she sighed. She was going to be a mother. That very thought frightened her, yet she was also excited. If her own mother were still alive, she’d be thrilled. But Edie knew that her mother was looking down at her, happy for her no matter what.

She knew that Cain and Lavan were watching her. The two men were entranced by her two hands, and where they rested. Edie eyed them.

An un-resistible yawn escaped her, then. She covered her mouth, blushing. “Sorry.”

“Perhaps we should let you be,” Tonisha whispered.

Edie shook her head. “No -- I want --” she paused. Looking down, she bit her tongue. They were all staring at her, eager to know what she wanted to say. She slowly looked up at them. “N -- never mind…”

“No, what did you want to say?” Cain asked, being the brave one. He received a low growl from Lavan.

“She said never mind,” he said.

The captain shrugged. “But why if it may be important?”

“It’s not,” Edie said. She shook her head. “I’m really tired…” She had wanted to ask them to stay. Or -- at least, one of them. She laid back and pulled her covers over her body. She smiled at them. “Thanks for coming back, Cain.”

“My pleasure…” he answered.

“And you remember your promise?” she asked quietly, though Lavan and Tonisha had heard.

“Yes,” Cain answered softly.

Lavan raised a brow. He wanted to know this promise. He stiffened, just barely keeping his mouth shut.

“Alright,” said Tonisha. “We’ll leave you to rest now, Edie.”

“Thank you,” Edie smiled. She looked from Lavan to Cain. “Bye.”

“Bye,” Cain bowed. He left before Lavan, but not before giving Lavan a stern, questionable glance first.

He had been eyed right back by the hunter. Lavan turned to Edie, ready to stay just a few seconds more. “Sleep well.”

Giggling, Edie nodded. “I will.”

Nodding, Lavan left with Tonisha.

Sighing, Edie rested against her pillow comfortably. She closed her eyes, waiting for sleep to take her over. Some time had passed. She groaned, tossing and turning. She slowly opened her eyes. She was unable to sleep. Frowning, she arched her head forward. Her eyes rolled to her stomach. She tilted her head some, thinking about her pregnancy. A gentle smile came to her as she rubbed her hand down her body, brushing over her stomach. She moaned and closed her eyes. Images of Cain and Lavan entered her mind.

Gasping, Edie shot her eyes open. She sat up some, working to lift up her dress. She lifted her behind, and pushed her undergarment down to her ankles. Her left foot slipped out, then, allowing her to spread her legs.

She never imagined doing something so daring before. But she was suddenly curious of her own vagina. She wanted to touch it, and pretend like her fingers were both Cain’s and Lavan’s -- working her wonderfully.

Moaning, she pressed her fingertips over her dry lips hidden beneath golden hairs. She blinked, realizing she had to work her vagina in order to get it wet. She copied what Cain had done to her that special night they had had. She moved them in a circular motion, moving over her clitoris. It started throbbing, causing her to gasp. She lay back down as she played with herself.

“Mm…” she moaned. “Yes -- Lavan -- Mm… Cain…” She closed her eyes again, picturing the two. Unlike in the past, when she was once afraid to think of them, Edie now accepted what she saw.

Grasping her covered right breast, Edie inserted her middle finger deep into her hole. She gasped loudly, and shuddered as she moved her hips. She spread her legs as wide as possible.

“Ah…! Yes -- yes…!”

Arching her back, Edie quivered as an orgasm hit her. She smiled as she panted. She rubbed her vagina more gently, cooing happily. She sighed as she closed her eyes. Moaning, she pushed her legs together, dreamily thinking of the two men she somehow adored. And she soon fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

--

The second-in-command felt at a loss. He worked diligently, and on time. He was organized and well-balanced. And he always was prepared to turn his work into his captain. But that was just it. Lately, his captain’s been on edge, alone, and not himself. Mark wasn’t fond of the change. He ached for his captain -- truly -- but Cain’s continuous sorrowing Mark’s witnessed those past few weeks was getting old.

Sighing, Mark fixed up his white shirt. He was finished with work, that day. Exhausted, he readied for bed. A sudden gentle knock at his door surprised him. Who could it be?

Turning, he went over to the door. He opened it wide, finding Aleah standing there. He raised a brow, eyeing her awkwardly.

“Yes?” He was used to this routine. She, for some reason, would come to his door every night to wish him pleasant dreams. And any time he tried to tell her it wasn’t necessary, she felt that it was.

“Um…” she fiddled with her fingers some. She was already wearing her nightwear. “I wanted to say goodnight.”

Sighing, Mark stepped out into the hallway with her. He smiled lightly, not wanting her to see his covered anger. “You come to my room every night, Aleah. And forgive me -- but I do not believe it is necessary.”

“I’m sorry, Mark. I just -- I truly wanted to say goodnight.”

“And I appreciate that.” he sighed. She was a bit adorable, but she made him feel awkward. “But I think you…”

A sudden shadow caught his eye. Turning his head, Mark spotted Cain rushing around the corner far down the hallway. Mark tilted his head. Now, that was curious. Why was his captain running about outside of his luxurious bedroom? And why was he fully dressed?

“Will you excuse me?” he asked Aleah as he chased after his captain.

Gaping, Aleah frowned. She bowed her head and turned to go to bed.

--

“Captain!”

Mark waved his hand high. He had caught up to his captain. Cain eyed the panting Cretchen. He halted in his steps, and was flushed over from being caught. He had hoped to avoid everyone, especially Mark.

“What are you doing?” Cain asked.

“I -- I should be asking you the same question, Captain.” He leaned forward -- his head rested between his legs -- “I thought you were taking time off work. Why are you dressed for pleasure?” Once he was able to breath normally again, he stood up straight.

Growling lowly, Cain crossed his arms. This was not like Mark’s captain. Normally, Cain placed both hands behind his back, he’d stand proudly and obnoxiously. But he was almost slouched and his feet were apart.

Mark knew something was off.

“Where were you?” he had asked this bravely. In the past, saying such a thing might have gotten him into trouble. But now, he knew he was safe. “I thought you were in your quarters working.”

“If you must know, Tonisha came to me this morning. Edie’s -- pregnant.”

“Pregnant?” Mark’s jaw dropped. He took a step back, bowing his head. It was clear, then. His eyes widened as he glanced up at Cain. “You mean…?”

“It could be mine,” Cain said. He opened his bedroom door. He walked inside, not bothering to shut it on Mark. He knew that he was followed. He was too upset to care. He removed his jacket and tossed it to the floor. He kicked off his boots, tossing one here and the other there.

Mark dodged one boot. He glanced about the captain’s chamber. It was not as clean as it used to be.

“I don’t understand,” Mark gaped. “When did you…?”

“That’s not your business,” Cain growled. He sat down on his bed, and leaned back. He looked irritated, but he remained silent. This gave his second-in-command the opportunity to share his feelings on the sudden changes occurring all over the place.

“Y -- you’re right, it’s not.” Mark bit his lip. “Forgive me, captain. But I can’t help feeling worried about you. You’ve not been yourself lately, and I know that Edie’s influenced you quite a lot…” He paused for a moment. Cain had raised a brow at him, looking mad. “I’m wanting to be supportive, believe me. I just -- I don’t know.”

Sighing, Cain stood. He walked straight up to Mark, becoming angered. “Go on.”

Shocked by the order, Mark nearly glared. “That’s more like you.”

“Excuse me?”

“Your threat,” Mark chuckled. “It was the first I’ve heard in -- well, weeks.”

“So --” Cain straightened up. He was rather annoyed at Mark. How dare the man complain about something so idiotic? “Would you prefer it if I was an asshole, then?” he asked.

“That’s not what I meant,” sighed Mark. “I just think that -- you’re becoming something you’re not. It could lead to disaster, captain.”

“Disaster?” Cain burst out laughing. He shook his head. Soon, he was glaring as his laughing ceased. “I am sick and tired of being told what I should or should not be. While you stand here before me, declaring I am changing for the worst, Tonisha pesters me about changing for the better. Do not become a pestering fool, Mark! I taught you better than that!”

“Forgive me,” Mark bowed. “I just do not want you to get hurt.”

“Do you honestly care for me that much, Mark?”

“Yes, my Captain.”

Snorting, Cain shook his head. He went over to his desk, and poured himself a drink. He remained silent, while he did this. But once he had sipped down the strong alcoholic beverage, he sharply turned to glare Mark down.

“Then you are a fool,” he growled.

Stunned, Mark took a step back. He only slightly lowered his head, keeping his eyes glued to his captain. “Sir…?”

“Worrying so strongly about me,” Cain scolded, “It’s absurd. It makes you out to be a twat, Mark.”

“But you are my captain!” Mark shouted. “I am meant to protect you, and see to your safety!”

“No, Mark -- you only think that you are. Do you even recall why I let you become a part of who I am? Do you ever ponder why I allowed someone of your status to become a Cretchen?”

Shrinking back, Mark grinded his teeth together. “Please, captain.”

“Just be thankful that your dying mother got to see her son become someone great!” Sighing, Cain sipped up his ale. He slammed the glass down, nearly shattering it against his desk. “Just be thankful that you have this job! I could have easily chosen someone more qualified as my second-in-command. I could have easily killed you!”

“I know…” Mark whimpered. He struggled not to break down in front of his boss.

With the alcohol getting to him, Cain stumbled to his front door. He opened it wide for Mark, showing that it was time for the assistant to leave.

“Don’t worry about me,” Cain demanded. “I am a big boy. I can take care of myself. Go worry about your work, instead. And next time you decide to try and talk with me about my choices, think before you act.”

Near meltdown, Mark quickly left. He jumped as the doors slammed closed behind him. Frowning, he shuddered as he took the long route back to his own room. Even though he had clearly upset his captain, he knew that if Cain continued working on transforming his image, something bad could come of it.

And Mark did not want that to happen.
