CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
“Do what I told you!”
Nathan’s shout to one of their escorts made no sense to Roth. He had no time to contemplate. Two guys seemed to appear, pistols fitted with silencers in hand. Roth didn’t shoot to kill.
At first.
After it became apparent that even if the hitters went down, they didn’t stop shooting, Roth stopped attempting to preserve life.
First, do no harm …
The firefight ended quickly. Distinctive smell of discharged weapons hung in the air. Roth and Nathan walked around kicking firearms from the reach of any bad guy still breathing. Adam got to his feet before bidden. Sirens sounded in the distance.
“This’ll be interesting to explain to the blue boys,” Adam observed.
“Actually,” Nathan began, “I had a guy make a call for me. I’d contacted a local special agent because I suspected this might happen.”
Roth glanced around, seeing anxious faces pressed to windows. The neighborhood had changed forever now. He walked back to his fiancé and examined his cut. The wound itself seemed minor, but sometimes the blow did deeper damage. Studying his lover’s pupils, he asked, “You okay, baby?”
“Just a minor ding to the dome. You covered me with your own body.”
“Yeah.” He wondered if Adam might have had his bell rung a little too hard.
“No one’s ever made that kind of sacrifice for me.” His tone held wonder.
“I didn’t get scratched. No sacrifice.”
Adam kissed him, brief and affectionate before pointing out, “When you did it, you had no way of knowing that.”
Even as local law rolled on scene, and they all obeyed the orders to put their hands on their heads, a second wave of sedans arrived. A small woman with an air of command many men would envy, stepped from one as it stopped.
She held up her credentials, “Special Agent Sarah Spelling, FBI. This scene pertains to a multi-jurisdictional kidnapping, murder and racketeering case. We appreciate the professional courtesy in securing the scene and cooperating. Paperwork’s in the hopper. You may call my unit head to verify chain of command.”
Roth noted the large black eyes, pixie features and aura of power.
Nathan wiped his hand on his jeans before offering it. “Special Agent Spelling, good to meet you. Thanks so much for responding.”
She shook with him, then turned her attention to the rest of them. Returning her credentials to the inner pocket of her blazer, she asked, “You gentlemen okay? Do we need to call for a bus?”
Roth replied, “I can treat our injuries, thank you.”
“I should line you macho assholes up and beat you,” Joseph raged, on a true tear. “You just hang your butts in the wind without considering the rest of us.”
“Meaning you,” Adam responded as Roth cleaned his cut.
Nathan gathered his lover close. “We came through clear.”
Joseph smacked and slapped at the enormous man. “I could shoot you for acting so calm about it.”
Nathan kissed the smaller man with touching sweetness, until he moaned under the campaign of tenderness.
Special Agent Spelling laughed as she wrote her initial report. “This’ll take some heavy doing. But, given the circumstances we might keep the whole event fairly quiet. Names at least.”
Adam queried, “Does the shit provided make you think there’s really a case?”
She looked at him. “Yes. Looks like your dad and his two friends worked together at great risk to themselves. Especially the coroner, who maintained a relationship with a scary dude, making him give up goods in pillow talk.”
“Any clue she and my father maintained an adulterous relationship?”
Special Agent Spelling shook her head. “No, sir. To me, seems like they used that as a façade.” Returning her attention to the forms, she added, “Mr. Taggart, rest your head tonight knowing the people around you were quality.”
Roth made Adam go to bed.
He washed his fiancé in the shower, rubbed him down with light almond oil, then tucked him into bed. Afterward, Roth walked out into the house. The big silhouette of Nathan did not surprise him.
“I hope Joseph’s okay.”
“He’ll verbally spank me again in the morning.”
Roth strode into the kitchen. “Have a drink with me?”
“Yeah.”
He reached for vodka, then changed ideas. Taking Scotch from the cabinet, he set it on the counter, got out two rock glasses, and poured two fingers in each. “Cheers.”
They swallowed liquor. Gazing at each other, they established an unspoken exchange.
Roth roused in the night to Adam kissing his skin. Leisured and sweet, Adam courted him. Pleasured him.
Sighing, Roth said, “I love you, baby.”
