Chapter 33
"Mom! Dad!" Kyleigh yelled as she ran into the house ahead of everyone. Andrew and Paige were the only ones who accompanied Kyleigh and Randi into the house. The other vampires were all underneath layers of blankets inside one of the vans parked on the street. The other held the remaing shifters. There were ten vampires and eight shifters all together. Not as big a number as they had started out with, but it was going to have to do for now.
Randi still didn't have her memory back. All of the images that had flowed through her mind had left just as quickly as they had come. It frustrated her to no end. She wanted to remember, needed to remember what was going on with her and who she was. The only things she did know was pretty much what she had started out with her. Her name, Edward and now that Kyleigh was her family and they had the same parents. She couldn't remember any of that but she knew that it was true because Andrew had confirmed it after she had yelled at him for not telling her.
"Mom! Dad, I'm home!" Kyleigh yelled again, tramping through the house trying to find her parents. The three adults stood in the living room and looked back and forth at each other.
"Something's wrong." Randi said looking off down the hallway. Andrew nodded.
"Fresh blood has been spilled here." Paige told them. She was looking down the hallway, too.
"Paige, stay here." Andrew instructed her. Kyleigh came back into the room, confusion plain to see on her features.
"They're not here. Where would they have gone?" She asked. Beside Randi, Paige's body tensed. Where was her son?
"Kyleigh, stay here with Paige, alright?" Randi told her. Paige took Kyeigh over and sat her down on the couch. Andrew and Randi headed down the hallway. It was almost eerie as they passed the pictures hanging on the wall, now that Randi knew the unknown girl in the row of pictures was herself.
"Where is the blood coming from?" Randi asked him, almost not wanting to know the answer.
"Can't you smell it?" He said. His eyes were transfixed on a closed door at the end of the hall. Had Kyleigh just forgotten to look in that room? Randi took a deep breath and opened the door. It was Hayden and Robert's bedroom but there was no blood on any of the furniture.
"I don't get it." Randi said looking up at Andrew. Andrew was looking straight up at the ceiling. Above them a cord was hanging down from the door to the attic. Andrew reached up and pulled it down and carefully, letting the stairs slide down to the ground. Randi went up first.
The attic was dark and if it had been a normal person they wouldn't have been able to see a thing. But since Randi and Andrew weren't ordinary people, they could see everything with a clarity that Randi wished she never had. Across the attic, lying on the floor, was Hayden. Randi suddenly panicked.
"Mom!" she cried, running over and falling to her knees. There was so much blood. It covered the floor around her in a thick pool. Hayden's stomach had been ripped apart.
"Kyleigh..." Hayden said weakly. She turned her head to look at Randi.
"No, mom, it's me, Miranda." Randi said, tears forming in her eyes.
"Randi...? But I thought...you were..." Hayden tried, her voice barely audible.
"Shhh, it's alright. Nothing happened to me, I'm alive." The tears started to run down her cheeks. Hayden reached out searching for Randi's hand. Randi took it and held it in both of hers. "Listen, mom, I need you to tell me something. Where's Dylan?"
"Who?"
"Dylan, the baby we left with you. Where is he?" Randi squeezed her mom's hand roughly, trying to keep her there in the real world.
"The basement." Her voice was so weak.
"And Dad?" Randi asked.
"They took him..."
"Who took him?" Hayden only shook her head. She reached up with her other hand and held Randi's face.
"My little girl. Keep your sister safe." Hayden told her.
"I will, don't worry about Kyleigh. She'll be just fine." A smile formed on Hayden's face. She took a few ragged breaths and then her hand fell away from Randi's face, her eyes closing. Randi knew that she was gone.
"Mom?" she heard Kyleigh's voice. Andrew was up and across the attic in seconds, turning Kyleigh away from her mother on the floor. "Let me go! I want to see her!" Kyleigh screamed. She thrashed in Andrew's arms but his grip was iron. Randi stood up, her clothes covered in blood. Her eyes were dark as she went over to Andrew and Kyleigh. She walked down the stairs back into the bedroom with Andrew carrying Kyleigh.
Randi closed the stairs to the attic and ripped the cord from the door so no one could go up there. She walked down the hall past Paige and into the kitchen. She flung the door open that led to the basement and descended the stairs. Randi could hear Dylan's breathing. She ran across the room and started throwing cardboard boxes out of her way from the far corner. There, lying on the floor in a mass of blankets, was Dylan. Randi picked him up in the blanket he was wrapped in and took him back upstairs. It didn't register that she had found the basement without knowing where it was, she just had to get to Dylan before something happened to him.
Paige broke down into tears when Randi handed her back her baby. She was so happy to have her son back in her arms. It had felt like an eternity. Kyleigh was sitting on the couch staring at nothing in particular, in a trance like state. Randi went to her knees in front of her, careful not to touch her so she wouldn't get any blood on her.
"Kyleigh, I know you wanted to see. But you didn't need to see. Mom loves you and wants you to know that."
"You don't even know what kind of a mother she was." Kyleigh snapped at her.
"I know that. And I'm hoping that I will be able to remember what she was like, so that both of us will have a memory of her. But right now we have to go and find the men who has our father. We have to get to Liz's home and use her family to help find the men responsible for this." Randi told her. She stood and took Kyleigh's arm, helping her to her feet. Together, the five of them left the house and headed west.
