Chapter 32

"What the hell were you thinking!" Mailynn screamed at Sydney. She extended one arm and slapped her daughter across her face. Sydney's head jerked to the side from the force of it but she remained on her feet. "Why would you bring them here? What good is that going to do? You could have jeopardized everything I am trying to do!" She went to slap Sydney again but she caught her mother's wrist in her hand.
"What the hell was I thinking? No, mother, what the hell were you thinking? You killed Ashton in our own house! You killed your own son!" Sydney yelled, her voice almost a shriek. Mailynn jerked her arm away from Sydney.
"I did no such thing. I would never, never harm any of my children and you should know that." She replied with cold eyes. "SOmeone came into our home and murdered your brother."
"Do you honestly think that I'm that stupid? That dad is that stupid? He's going to figure out exactly what you've been doing and he's going to punish you for the crimes you have committed. You'll be lucky if he doesn't kill you." A smile formed on Mailynn's lips, a laugh coming from deep within her.
"Oh, no, child. You do not understand anything at all." She took a stop forward so that her face was inches from Sydney's. "Your father will believe anything that I tell him. That is the beauty of manipulation. But you," Her voice dropped to a whisper "What do you think your father would think of you if he found out that you were the one behind everything that has been happening. That you were the one who killed Ashton, his only son. You forget, daughter, that I have more power than you do. Never forget that." Her last words came out in a clipped burst of anger. An innocent smile touched her lips and then she was gone from the room.
Sydney stood alone in the room, staring at where her mother had been standing. She didn't hold it against her mother that she would blame her for all that had happened. Mailynn hadn't the woman she used to be in a very long time. How had she gotten involved in all of this? Sydney had dug herself a very deep hole and wasn't sure she knew how to climb out of it. Sydney sank to the floor covering her face with her hands. She didn't want to lose herself but the tears started to fall and wouldn't stop. She cried for everything she had done, for all the things she couldn't stop and for all the things that she was still about to do.
"Sydney?" a soft voice called. Sydney let her hands fall but she already knew who had called her name. She quickly wiped at the tears on her face. She did not cry in front of others. "Sydney, what's wrong?" Savannah said kneeling down at her sisters side. Sydney shook her head.
"Nothing, I'm fine, really." she said trying to smile and it didn't quite reach her eyes. Savannah turned Sydney's face so that she was looking at her.
"Don't even try to lie to me. I know you better than that." She said soothinly. Sydney opened her mouth to reassure her sister that she was fine but a sob came out instead. Savannah wrapped her arms around Sydney and held her close as new, fresh tears started to fall from her eyes. "Shhh, it'll be alright. I promise. Tell me what happened." Sydney shook her head against Savannah's shoulder.
"I can't." She said, her voice cracking.
"Yes, you can. You can tell me anything." Savannah whispered against her hair.
"You don't understand. I want to tell you, buttelling you would be ending my life and putting the rest of you in danger. I won't do it." Savannah ran her hand up and down Sydney's back.
"Alright, alright. You don't have to tell me, not now at least. But you need to talk about this to someone or it's going to tear you apart." Savannah told her. Sydney didn't say anything, only held onto her sister like she was the last real thing in the world. Time passed slowly in the room until neither of them had no idea how long they had sat there. Sydney pulled away from her sister to sit on her own, the tears gone from her face.
"How's Daniel doing?" She asked changing the subject completely. The last thing she wanted was to bring it back up in any way.
"He's doing better. It's...challenging. Neither of us are quite sure what to expect from the bonding. It will just be something that only time will give us." Sydney nodded her head absentmindedly.
"What about the other girl? The younger one?" Sydney asked. This time she had a little more emotion in her voice. But then she had always been more concerned when it came to other vampires.
"Whitney is fine. I checked on her this morning and the burns on her body had been reduced to look like a bad sunburn. Her body is still very tender to touch, but Dennis and Corey are making sure that she is well cared for. Neither will let her out of their sight for a second." She said with a small laugh. "And I think that you should get back to bed. It is not time for you to wake yet."
"I don't want to sleep." Sydney said stubbornly.
"I know, but you have to if you want all your strength back by tonight. I have a feeling everyone is going to need all the strength they can get." Savannah told her. She stood to her feet in one fluid motion and helped Sydney to stand. She placed an arm around her shoulders and led her out of the room.
"Will you stay with me? Until I fall asleep?" Sydney asked quietly.
"Of course. I won't leave you." Savannah told her. Sydney nodded as they headed down the stairs. Savannah was worried. What had happened to make her sister act this way? Sydney was usual the most calm and anti-show-her-feelings to anyone she had ever met. She was going to need to talk to her father about this one.
