Chapter 31
~`~`~`~`~` ( Author Notes ) `~`~`~`~`~
Sorry for the wait! I've been super busy this past week!
Thanks for all the great responses everyone! I hope you all enjoy this next installment, it’s going to get really interesting as the night develops.
Amanda88 – Thanks as always! :)
ShelleDW – Thanks! Lol I’m so glad you like Slaiden so much and his idea of ‘fun’. He loves to mess around with people and make them suffer along the way. He makes bad look really good. ;) And that’s another vote for a sequel. I will probably do it since I don’t want this story to grow to 70+ chapters, way too long. It probably deserves its own story since I’ve thought up a lot of ideas for it but we will see. I’ll figure it out once I get to the big chapter…..as well as think of a new title or just Summoned part 2…..so many possibilities, lol!
Jackpot7374 – lol biting off my tongue is a fear of mine as well, I gave myself shivers just writing about it! And be patient, my friend. You can’t rush genius! Lol JK. But yes, the party scene will probably be at least two chapters, starting with this one. Not sure exactly yet since I haven’t sorted it all out yet but either way, enjoy.
Thanks for all the Reviews, Hits, and Rates!

Chapter 31
-------------------- ( Third Person POV ) --------------------
Detective Gavin was not in a good mood this Friday night. When he had received the call from dispatch about a murder he had been expecting something more subtle like a simple gunshot to the heart, not the gory sight before him. Just the sight of the body told him that this was Slaiden’s handy work which just pissed off the detective more. They had been right to assume that Slaiden could strike at any given night of the weekend. At least from what Gavin could make out of the bloody mess was that the victim appeared to be a young man. With the murder being this deep in the city, it was too soon to tell if the boy went to Harley’s school. Gavin would have to wait for Trisha to come and process the body and scene for his ID since no witnesses had come forward. Not that Gavin thought there would be any. If someone else had seen, they’d be dead right here as well.
“I don’t even have to say it, do I?” says a feminine voice behind the detective.
“Nope.” Detective Gavin simply says as he turns around to greet Trisha Melrose. “Take a look.”
Trisha surveys the area to make sure no other officers are around to overhear them then steps out and around him to get a better view. She gives a small gasp at the sight. “Wow…”
“Yeah, except we don’t need to ask how he got those scars.” Gavin comments completely serious despite the small pun.
“If we didn’t know the culprit I’d say this was the work of the Joker or some crazed fanatic.” Trisha says as she lowers herself and opens her kit.
“Well Slaiden is on the sadistic side so for him being similar to the Joker doesn’t surprise me at all but I’d take on the Joker over a demon any day.” Gavin replies as he watches Trisha put on some gloves and skims over the contents of her processing kit.
“Alright Commissioner Gordon, go chase after the clown and let the real heroes catch the demon.” Trisha jokes.
Gavin gives a small smile at her humor. “So where’s Robin then?”
Trisha cracks a smile of her own before answering. “The boy wonder is on his way with Luke, he got held up back at the lab…..Hey, found his wallet.” Trisha says as she grabs the wallet with her tools as to not lose any evidence. She skillfully flips it open without laying an actual finger on the leather material and views the driver license showing in the transparent pocket. Scanning the small print, her eyes show concern. “Well Detective, you’re not going to like this.”
“Let’s hear it.” The detective says running a hand through his short hair. He already knows where this is going and has his other hand in his jacket pocket, around his phone.
“Reed Kent, age 18, current residence 33894 Red Cedar Road, Sterling, MI 48804. (NOT REAL ADDRESS) This is near where Harley lives so I think it's alright to assume that he went to Harley’s school. Call her to get a confirmation. She could have background information on him that could prove useful. Sadly, I consider this a bittersweet discovery on that we could be getting closer to discovering the identity of Slaiden’s summoner but at the cost of a life, something I didn’t want to happen.” Trisha says, not taking her eyes off of the body.
“I had a feeling this would happen…*Sigh*…I call her now and see what she says.” Gavin replies, taking out his cell.
“Hey guys, what’ve we got?” The familiar voice of Louis says from behind them. The pair turns to meet Louis and Luke, the coroner, their faces void of any expression at this point.
“See for your selves boys.” Trisha says as she moves over to let them see.
Louis looks down and instantly scrunches up his face in discomfort. His hand comes up to cover his mouth. He looks back at the others to distract his eyes. “Ugh…that’s just sick.” He gets out in a muffled voice.
Trisha just gives a curt nod in agreement, sending him a look to keep the comments to a minimum. Catching it, Louis nods back and makes room for Luke to get to work on examining the victim’s body. A victim whose story they already know.
“This guy sure got a number done on him, looks like by the same murderer from before by the look of the wounds.” Luke comments as he examines each wound, taking extra care with the ones on Kent’s face.
“Yeah, that’s what we assume so far.” Gavin says as he scans through his contacts. “Excuse me, I have to make a call.” Trisha shoots him a knowing look, giving a curt nod that goes unnoticed by Luke. Returning the look, the detective turns and walks back to his car. Gavin looks around to make sure other officers aren’t too close then gets inside for some privacy. Phone at the ready, he presses SEND.
-------------------- ( Harley’s POV ) --------------------
( The Next Night )
It was the night of the party and I was just finishing up getting ready in my room. It was April now and the nights have gotten slightly warmer so I decided on wearing jean capris and a nice short sleeve red v-neck top. I was going for casual tonight in case I had to be quick on my feet if Slaiden strikes again. He had already killed last night. Detective Gavin had called late asking if Reed Kent went to my school, which was a yes. I didn’t know him well at all but I did know that he was a bit of a tough kid, liked to take risks. I also knew that he worked with Jeff. I told him all this but it didn’t really help. The only thing we found useful was that he had went to my school so that made tonight even more important. I even asked Jeff about Reed earlier since it was on the news this morning, an easy cover on how I knew about his death.
Jeff had been a bit sad about it but he said they weren’t that close. Apparently Reed had hustled him and the other guys at their work out of some cash in the past so while he felt bad about Reed dying, he wasn’t particularly devastated. He said he would go to the funeral though, as well as the other co-workers to pay their respects. He did find it horrible that Reed was murdered though, saying that Reed didn’t deserve to go that way even if he did try to hustle some thugs on the street. He said Reed went into the city a lot, always bragging on his winnings. Jeff said if Reed hadn’t have bitten off more than he could chew then he would still be alive. Sad but true, something I had to agree with. Reed might’ve been killed by Slaiden but it was logical for everyone else to assume it was some street punk since it was actually possible. Slaiden just got to him first apparently…..and played with him like only a demon could.
While I agreed that Reed’s gambling and hustling were bad things to do, it didn’t seem like something worth getting killed over. Not even if Reed had cheated someone out of a large sum of money. He must’ve done something really bad to deserve a death by demon in my opinion. But then again, I still didn’t know what the others had done. All I had to go by was Slaiden’s word that ‘their deaths were very much deserved’, which just puzzled me further. “What could they have done to someone? Someone my age…..what did it take to get on the summoner’s list?”
I ponder this a bit more as I do my make up but nothing comes to mind unless all the victims did serious crimes that effected the summoner or where just known to summoner and he viewed them as wrong. But I was betting more on the former at this rate but it could even be a bit of both. I give a sigh of disappointment and finish up getting myself together. Once my simple stud earrings are in, I’m all set. No way was I wasting any good jewelry tonight if there is a high chance of it getting ruined. I wasn’t even risking my fake Tiffany’s & Co necklace that I got for $15 a few months back that I wore all the time. Casual is the safe way to go…..not like I was trying to impress anyone tonight anyway.
Tina might be on the other hand though. She and Jeff were kind of treating tonight like a date, planning on dancing together. Jeff was in a bit of a better mood since Wednesday also. Phil had apologized first thing the next day which surprised me as well as Tina. He had said what he did and how he acted was out of line and that he was very sorry. He explained to Tina that he had a minor case of Bipolarism that he was seeing a therapist for. He even showed her his medication to prove it and gave her the number of his therapist’s office if she wanted to check into it further for legal purposes. I convinced her to do it even though his doctor wouldn’t be able to release any information due to patient and doctor confidentiality. His doctor didn’t say anything much besides that Phil was a patient of his, which he only released when Tina told him about the legal action against him that she was considering taking. A few of his close friends such as Kevin even said Phil has mood swings that they have been on the other end of but always forgive him once he cools off.
Since his story checked out and he apologized sincerely, Tina forgave him and no charges are being pressed. I’m even okay with it since of the circumstances. Jeff eventually cooled off too, which I think was just because of his feelings for her. He even said he would be civil with Phil if he bumped into him tonight at Kevin’s party.
*Bzzz* *Bzzz* Bzzz*
My phone is vibrating on my bed which means the guys are here. I glance at it to make sure then spray on my perfume and head downstairs. I tell my family bye and leave, not bothering to bring anything else. I get outside to see Conner’s old ’89 Toyota Camry with Jeff, Tina and Gil inside parked in my driveway. Ryan was in his truck as well in the street with Claire and two other boys from his team. I wave to them and hop in Conner’s car and we follow Ryan out of my subdivision.
“Alright just so we’re clear Conner, you’re not touching an ounce of alcohol.” I say in warning but with a bit of playfulness.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m DD tonight so I’ll be a good little boy.” Conner says over his shoulder with a wink. I just grin at his mockery, knowing that he’s learned his lesson. I don’t plan on drinking for obvious reasons but I know a few of the others will partake. Kevin’s parents are most likely away for the weekend if he’s supplying.
“Yeah no worries there, Harley. I’ll keep a good eye on him.” Gil says from the passenger seat with a big grin and a wink.
“That’s what scares me.” I say jokingly.
Everyone laughs at this as Conner drives. I can tell that he is a bit embarrassed but it’s all in good fun. I don’t say anything more but Gil decides to keep up our little rag on Conner.
“So dude, is Courtney going to be there?” Gil says with a mischievous smirk, drawling out Courtney’s name.
Tina makes a small cooing noise which makes Conner get a slight blush to his cheeks. That is answer enough for us as we all laugh some more. “It’s O.K. Conner,” I say sincerely, “Just go work that quirky charm we all love and I bet she’ll dance with you.”
“You think so?” He asks eagerly, all signs of embarrassment gone instantly.
We all laugh harder at this despite Conner’s persistence in wanting our opinions. His seriousness just fuels our laughter the rest of the way to Kevin’s house at the lake.
Once we get to the house, we can already tell it’s a huge party. Cars were parked all along the long, dark street. While to everyone else, this would signify a good time but to me it just made me nervous. “Oh great,” I thought as we all piled out, “how am I going to keep tabs on people in this mess? Detective Gavin better be close by.”
As our large group walks up the driveway I scanned the trees and sky for any movement but nothing stirs besides the leaves by the slight breeze. Music is pumping through the walls as we get to the door. It is open so we just walk in. People were everywhere, dancing in the living room, chatting in the kitchen and from the backyard windows kids could be seen hanging out by a bonfire on the patio. We split up a bit once we were all in the living room. Ryan’s friends went towards the backyard while Ryan, Claire, Jeff and Tina all went to the dance area. Conner and Gil headed to the kitchen which I send him another warning look just in case. I told the other’s that I’d be back, that I was just going to use the bathroom. A simple lie but I figured that this was as good a time as any to survey the party and get familiar with the layout, especially near the lake where it will be darkest.
Kevin’s house was two stories with a basement but I doubt Slaiden would make an effort to come inside like he did at Richie’s. Slaiden would mostly like hide out in the trees if he should show up and strike so I decided to save that for last. The upstairs would be occupied with people making out so I won’t bother with them. “The outside it is then.” I think as I make my way through the kitchen and see Kevin in there, passing out drinks. I smile his way and walk past the basement door, grazing the knob casually and noting the Master lock on the latch. “No one will be down there, one less dark room to worry about.” I mentally note as I make my way to patio door.
Stepping outside, there are about ten or so people around the fire, Phil being one of them with a Coke in hand. He looks up, making eye contact with me. I give him a small smile, showing him that I’m not here looking for trouble. He actually does the same, his eyes showing relief and sincerity. “Looks like Phil won’t be a problem at all. He just wants to enjoy the night like the rest of us…and he’s not drinking, so his temper won’t flare up easily, another good thing.” I say hi to a few other kids that I know and pull out my cell phone. I pretend to answer it and head towards the lake, appearing to want privacy. Kevin’s yard is a few acres with the lake being roughly fifty yards from the house. I’ve never been in his backyard before, only inside so I take in the landscape. I note that the nearest house is a few acres away, barely visible with all the trees in between. A fact I didn’t like. Slaiden could attack and no neighbors would be able to see anything. I walk further down to the lake, phone still at my ear. I soon reach the water and look back around. The house it not well lit on the outside besides the fire and the people around it were too far away to make out good detail on them. I couldn’t even hear the loud music this far out.
The lake was fairly large…and dark. There were trees lining the whole way around it with a few houses in between. Not many lights at all. The only real source of light is from the moon up above and it is only giving a faint glow over the water. There is a rope swing not too far away where the land rises into a small hill at the water line, forming a ledge about four feet high above the water. The tree that the rope is tied to is a large, old willow tree with its long wispy leaves draping the main trunk from view. I go over to it and pull the leaves back. “This could work to my advantage…or Slaiden’s.”
I back away from it and take in more of my surroundings. If Slaiden was going to strike, this would be the ideal area where there are less witnesses and no noise would be heard over the music. I take a few pictures of the lake, the trees and the rest of the yard and send them all to Detective Gavin. If Slaiden was going to show up, I wanted Gavin to know the area as well. Satisfied for the time being, I walk back to the party. As the house gets closer in my view, I can see that Zack Tambil and a few of his buddies are by the fire but Phil and some others have gone inside. I walk right on past them, ignoring Zack completely despite the eyes that I can feel boring into my back. “Of course that jerk is here, why do you have to be such a nice guy Kevin and invite the whole freaking class?” I think with a slight frown in annoyance. I go back inside and make my way back to the living room when something occurs to me. “Wait…Zack has pissed off a lot of people at school before, could he be the next target? I better keep an eye on him even if I really don’t want to.” I join the others as the kid DJing plays ‘Cupid Shuffle’. I dance along next to Tina as I look around me at all the people, searching for faces of interest to watch for.
Disappointingly, no one dancing jumps out at me that says ‘I’m a bad person, demons come kill me.’ Not that I know any one’s life story. All the people around me, I know well enough to know that they don’t cause much trouble. But everyone has that mask on the surface that they want everyone to see, never knowing who they really are. “Never judge a book by its cover.” I remind myself as the song ends. Even though I could be wasting my time tonight, I have a gut feeling that Slaiden will show up and I always go with my gut.
As a new song starts up, me, Tina, and Jeff go into the kitchen to get some drinks, leaving Ryan and Claire to get cozy on the dance floor. Conner and Gil are still in there and I am glad to see a Coke in Conner’s hand. Jeff grabs a beer for himself and a Coke for me and Tina. We all chat for a bit as we drink, sharing some laughs. I still scan the crowd once in a while but I’m careful not to appear to be acting oddly in front of everyone. I almost don’t catch Tina telling me that her and Jeff are going back to dance. I tell them that I’ll catch up, catching someone of interest. Across the room is Jamie Fisher. He hangs around with Zack sometimes but also has his own crowd. He tends to run his mouth a lot in class and enjoys giving others a hard time. While I think Zack has 1st place fro top jerk, Jamie comes in close second. Right now he’s chugging the last of his beer and playing beer pong on the kitchen table.
While I observe, Conner and Gil keep talking but I’m only half listening, running through the possible targets in my head. “Ok so far the only ones to watch here are Zack and Jamie. Both are jack asses and are hated by a number of students at school. Even I’ve experienced Zack’s ass hole moments…which I put down rather nicely. But Jamie on the other hand, he’s a jerk but hasn’t caused nearly as many fights as Zack has over the past four years. Hmmm…..both might have done something to piss of the summoner so I guess I’ll watch them the rest of the ni—huh? Did Conner just say my name?” I snap out of my musings at the sound of my name.
“Yo Harley. Earth to Harley, you there?” Conner says, waving his hand obnoxiously in front of my face.
“Uh, yeah. Sorry Conner, what did you say?” I say, trying to compose myself.
“I said, Courtney just got here. You think I should go ask her to dance?” Conner replies with a sheepish grin.
“Of course!” I say enthusiastically. “Go for it! I’m sure she’d love to.”
“Yeah man, go get the babe.” Gil says encouragingly, giving Conner a small shove in the direction of living room. Conner just shoves him back and flashes me a small smile as he walk off. “Dude! Ask her for a drink too! You rock that bandana!”
“Easy there Gil, let him at least talk to her first.” I say with a laugh. I’m about to comment more when movement in the corner of my eye makes me stop short. Jamie was on the move into the backyard where Zack and his friends still are. “I’ll catch up with you later Gil. I’m going to go say hi to some people.”
I walk off after giving him a small smile, not bothering to hear if he said anything and walk outside. I notice that the fire is starting to die even though it’s only a bit after eleven. I once more pretend to answer my phone since there is no one out there worth talking to. I walk off towards some trees not too far away, once more ignoring the eyes on me. “Ugh, I swear Zack is just waiting for an opportunity to start something. If he does I might think twice about trying to save him.” I think as I listen in, still within decent earshot.
They are just goofing around, being guys. Nothing remotely interesting or possibly a tip off on anything they’ve done that would be worth bragging rights to them but cruel torture to someone else. I roll my eyes as they talk, still pretending to talk to my imaginary caller. I act like I’m not paying attention to them when I catch Zack look my way and say something to the guy next to him. I just raise my eyebrows at him, showing him that I’m perfectly aware of his presence. I actually debate whether to go over and confront him when my phone actually does vibrate with an incoming call. The name Gavin De Niro shines on the screen. I answer, noting that none of the guys are looking my way anymore. “Hey, Detective.”
“Hey, any leads?” He says, cutting right to the chase.
“Two possibly, they are both outside and I’m watching them right now.” I reply, glancing back at the flickering fire.
“Good. I’m parked out front a ways down. So far the skies have been clear but it’s still early. I’m not expecting anything before midnight.” Gavin informs me.
“Same here. I think he will strike near the lake where it’s darkest if he shows.” I say, this time looking over at the calm lake.
“Yeah, I saw the pictures. I’m going to scout it out. I have a few ideas on setting a trap, nothing to stop him but enough to distract him. Is that tree noticeable from the house? I don’t need the cops called on me, especially since I am a cop.” Gavin asks as I hear him close a car door.
“Not really,” I say, studying the lake. “There is a lot of distance between them and there are not too many people out here. No one will even notice you or hear anything over the music.”
“Alright then, stay on your targets and remember, if you see Slaiden call me but don’t say anything. I’ll know right away that something is wrong.” Gavin says seriously on the other end.
“K, got it. Bye…..*Click*…” I hang up and start to go back to the patio when I see Phil exit, a pissed of expression on his face. “Uh-oh, please don’t be about Tina.” I think as he approaches me. “Are you O.K., Phil?” I ask sincerely as he walks past me.
“Yeah.” He says sharply, not even looking at me. “Nothing concerning you.”
“I was just asking.” I say after him as he walks towards the lake. “Whatever, he’s probably having a mood swing like Kevin had mentioned. Nothing I need to concern myself with like he said.” I think, shrugging it off. I don’t bother going after him, getting the impression quite clearly that he wants to be alone. I turn back and walk up to the patio and note the Jamie was going inside, only to have Tina and Jeff come out of the house.
“There you are Harley. We were looking for you.” Tina says with a smile.
“Sorry,” I reply, “Someone called me so I needed the quiet, can't hear a thing over the music in there.”
“Well now come dance with us and have some fun.” Jeff says, motioning me to come back inside.
I’m about to comment when Zack, who I had forgotten about at this point, opens his mouth. “Isn’t that cute, Brawner’s finally got himself a girl. And here I thought he was a queer for sure.” He says from behind me. His friends snicker at his comment.
Jeff’s face immediately turns into a scowl, apparently noticing Zack for the first time. “Shut it, Tambil. I don’t want to hear your shit tonight.”
Zack stands up at this, a smirk on his face. “You going to make me, Brawner? Or is your little body guard here going to come to your rescue?”
“Great, of all the nights, why tonight? Am I being punished or something? Ugh, I don’t have time for this! I want to save Zack, not beat his ass up!” I think with annoyance. Figuring that I better step in, I get between the two boys. “We’re at a party Zack. Can’t we all just mind our own business and have a good time? Why ruin a good night?”
Zack’s confident face falters slightly, his eyes showing a hint of worry. He must be remembering a few weeks back. “That’s right, remember what happened. I’ll gladly do it again. If only you knew the danger that attitude of yours might have put you in. If I save your sorry ass, I better get one hell of a thank you!” I think as I stare him dead in the eye, challenging him to say something.
His eyes then harden and his smirk is back in place. Apparently his common sense was overwritten by his big headedness. “I’m not ruining it at all. In fact, I’m making it better, more entertaining. If Jeff here wants to make me shut it then why not let him prove it.”
Jeff starts to speak but I cut him off. “No. We’re not stooping to your level. So either go back to what you were doing or I’m going to have Kevin kick you out. I’m sure he won’t appreciate your attitude. Your choice so make it now.” My voice is stern, not fooling around. Personally I want him to go back to enjoying the party so I can keep an eye on him. If he leaves…..I may not follow.
Zack just stares back, not breaking eye contact with me as my words sink in. He then looks at Jeff and Tina before speaking. “Fine, I’ll save you the effort. I’ll leave. This party isn’t worth my time if you all are here. I can drink and have a good time anywhere. Just remember that come summer time, I won’t have to worry about anyone getting in my way so just watch yourself Brawner.”
“Fuck off. One day you’ll get yours and I’ll just laugh. Karmas a bitch, you’d think you’d have learned that by now.” Jeff retorts, brining up what happened last time.
“If only Jeff knew how true his words are, he may not have said them. I have to make sure Zack lives even if I was the one to teach him that lesson thanks to you, Jeff.” I think as I tell Jeff to watch it. “Easy there Jeff, let’s just let it go and get back to the party.”
Jeff doesn’t comment behind me so I assume that this is all over. Zack thankfully confirms it. “Whatever, I’m getting more beer before I go. C’mon guys.” And with that Zack shoves past us and him and his friends go back into the house. Now it’s just us three out here.
We wait a few seconds in silence, letting ourselves relax a bit. I glance over at the lake and can make out the silhouette of Phil standing by himself. “Now that’s a healthy way to cool off, Zack should take note.” I think with a shrug. I also notice that there is no movement by the lake besides Phil so I don’t know if Gavin was around or not. But Zack and Jamie are both inside now so I better go in as well.
“Well…last time I checked there’s still a party going so let’s go! And Jeff, watch yourself. We need to work on your mouth or else Zack will do it for you. Harley or me won’t be there all the time.” Tina says with a bit of a nagging tone. While no one wants to play mom, Tina needs to tell him how it is.
“I’m sorry…to both of you. C’mon, let’s go dance.” Jeff says with a small smile.
I’m all for it when suddenly a shiver goes down my spine. A feeling I’ve come to know very well these past weeks. I can feel his eyes already on me, glowing in the darkness from where ever his hiding spot is.
“He’s here. Shit.” I think with dread as my hand gropes for my cell in my back pocket. “I’ll catch up, my cell is vibrating again. Guess I’m just a popular girl tonight.” I say jokingly, playing it as cool as possible.
“Guess so,” Tina says with a small laugh, “You’ll know where to find us.”
They go inside and immediately I call Gavin. I hear it ring once and hear him pick up. I hang it up instantly and look to the trees, trying to scout a certain demon out. Not seeing anything near the house, I start walking in the direction of the lake but turn to face the house, thinking he may be on the roof. No sign of him. I give out a grunt of frustration, not in the mood for a game of hide and seek. I almost consider checking the front yard since Zack and Jamie are inside and might not come out for a while so the lake may not be the point of attack. Then I hear the distinct flapping of wings above me and catch a shadow move through the trees, towards the lake.
“Why is he going there? No one is there but Phil… unless Gavin is around but why bother with him now when he hasn’t done anything yet.” I think as I start running over to the lake where Phil is at. I want to make him go inside so I can help Gavin. But suddenly I stop dead in my tracks. Slaiden has just stepped out of the tree line. He looks my way and while he is still too far away to make out his facial expression, I can tell that he is smirking at me. He then turns and looks towards unsuspecting Phil.
“Fuck! Phil is the target!!!”

Sorry again for the longer wait but life gets in the way sometimes. I hope you all liked this one. The next chapter will be even better now that Slaiden has stepped into the scene!
I should have Chapter 32 up by the end of the week. I’ll be gone Aug 7th-14th on vacation so if it’s not up by then, it will be up when I get back. Sorry in advance if I have to put it off for that long.
Please Review!
