TOKYO BOYS
Chapter 31
“Kaname… is that you? Wow… you look completely different.” One of his club friends was the first to see him the next morning, with his new styled hair.
Yuuto enjoyed the surprised expression on the boy’s face. If anything, the other boys in the art club were all normal looking, ranging from okay to boring. It was easy to feel superior next to them.
Even though his usual mentality to put himself down and humbled was still pressing strong, he gave the boy a lopsided smile, the closest he could get to a smirk, and walked away.
Entering class, however, was a different task. Everyone who was already in the room stopped talking when they noticed him walk in. Was he really looking that different?
“Kaname… you look.. good!” one of the girls said.
He tried to stretch his face in a smile, but it was still a little hard for him to act naturally in front of people. He decided it was another thing he had to work on. He couldn’t remain timid forever.
Midori was also shocked to see Yuuto’s new hairstyle, she tried talking to him but he quickly excused himself and pulled out a book to read.
It felt awkward having all the eyes in the room on him, but Yuuto wasn’t deterred. He didn’t care if they talked about him, pointed at him, or stared at him. He was feeling proud to have made the first step towards change.
Daisuke entered the classroom, as usual, a couple of minutes after the bell rang. He walked to his desk when his eyes wandered off to Yuuto’s desk.
“Hey, I didn’t recognize you…” He grinned and sat on Yuuto’s desk. “You look hot, Yuu-chan.” He attempted touching Yuuto’s pseudo Mohawk.
Yuuto flicked his hand away. “Don’t call me that… and don’t touch my hair!”
“Why is it soft?” Daisuke asked. “What did you use?”
Yuuto blushed. He didn’t want to reveal he was using his mother’s cream. He was planning to go out and buy a real hair gel after school, as well as getting his hair trimmed a little.
Fortunately, the class rep announced the teacher’s arrival before he had to reply.
Moriyama-sensei also paused on his name briefly. Yuuto shifted in his seat. Did the new hairstyle really make such a difference? It was just hair. Was everyone in school so shallow?
By the end of the day, Yuuto has gotten more attention than he had ever wished to get. It felt weird to be noticed by everyone, when he was nothing but Daisuke’s ‘little friend’ before.
He was on his way to the art club, when he started thinking of cutting club again. Before he could turn around, Daisuke stood in front of him. “Yuu-chan~ You’re cool like that, aren’t you?” He smirked.
Yuuto shrugged. “It’s not a big deal.”
“Even down to the snotty attitude… my, my.” Daisuke chuckled. He had a cigarette between his fingers. He played with it absentmindedly, until suddenly a hand snatched it from him.
“No smoking for you,” Moriyama-sensei said and shoved the cigarette in his shirt’s pocket.
Daisuke pouted. “That’s not fair.”
Yuuto watched the playful interaction between Daisuke and Moriyama-sensei and felt his heart pinching. Wasn’t he the one Daisuke used to smile to that way? Wasn’t he the one Daisuke would have playful retorts with? It felt like Moriyama-sensei took his place in Daisuke’s life.
It hurt.
He wished he could find someone to replace Daisuke in his life, someone who didn’t know him and his old self and would give him undivided attention, without having to fight bullies for him or protect him from them.
Someone new.
Daisuke was still busy talking to the teacher. Yuuto didn’t listen to what they were saying, but he knew what he wanted. He was sure Daisuke would never give him Yoshimura’s phone number or his address.
He suddenly remembered Mashiba. He was sure Daisuke had mentioned once that Mashiba was also hanging in ni-chome.
He cleared his throat, making both of them notice him.
“We should get to the club…”
“You’re right…” Moriyama-sensei regained his serious expression. His mobile phone started buzzing and he removed it from his pocket. He looked at the number, then at Daisuke.
“It’s your mother,” he said quietly and picked up. “Hello?”
Daisuke also turned serious, trying to listen in to the conversation.
“Actually, he’s standing right next to me,” He heard Moriyama-sensei saying. “Do you want to speak to him?”
Daisuke shook his head for no. It seemed his mother was thinking the same.
“Maybe it’s best if you two met face to face. I’m sure you want to see your son…” Shouji continued being passive-aggressive. “We could arrange a meeting place…”
Yuuto was torn between looking for Mashiba and listen in to the conversation out of concern for his friend. He decided to stay. Mashiba was at reach any day.
Moriyama-sensei ended the conversation and turned to look at Daisuke. “She agreed to meet you.”
“I don’t want to meet her…” Daisuke frowned.
“You can’t stay in my apartment forever. Someone will eventually find out about it and we will get into trouble.”
“You’re just helping me out…”
“I’m hiding your situation from the school board…” Moriyama whispered. “I'm already breaking laws for you. The least you could do is show some gratitude.”
“I’ve shown you my gratitude, haven’t I, Sensei?” Daisuke held his eyes at his teacher’s.
“Would you just go and meet your mother?” Yuuto had enough of the flirting. “She’s really worried about you!” He raised his voice in anger.
Daisuke turned to face him. “Yuu-chan?”
“She calls me all the time to ask how you’re doing… the least you could do is meet her. Stop acting like a spoiled brat… Do you really want to continue living the rest of your life without seeing your parents again?” Yuuto was so angry that he didn’t even have time to well up as he usually did when he was aggravated.
“Yuu-chan, my parents kicked me out, I didn’t run away…” Daisuke said quietly. “And frankly, what do you know? You don’t have a father and your mother is really nice. It’s better if you stayed out of this…” Daisuke tried to control his anger.
“Fine, I will. I’m going to tell your mother not to call me again, because I have nothing to do with you. GOODBYE.” Yuuto glowered and walked away.
“Yuu—“ Daisuke tried to grab his arm, but wasn’t quick enough. Yuuto ran off.
“Daisuke,” Moriyama-sensei said quietly. “Let him calm down. He only cares about you. And please rethink about seeing your mother.”
Daisuke looked at Yuuto’s back until he disappeared from his eyesight. He pondered whether he should run after him or stay with Moriyama-sensei. He’s never seen Yuuto so angry before and they never had a serious fight. He didn’t like it.
Eventually, he decided to stay with Moriyama-sensei and discuss meeting his mother. He was honestly surprised to find out she has been calling Yuuto to inquire about his well-being.
“Fine. I’ll see her,” he said quietly. “But only once.”
Shouji smiled. It was already heading in the right direction.

Yuuto felt the blood seething in his veins. Daisuke that idiot, he thought. He decided he didn’t care what the hell happened to that boy anymore.
By mere coincidence, he spotted Mashiba near the lockers, preparing to leave school.
“Mashiba-kun!” he called out to him and ran over clumsily, carrying his portfolio.
The other boy looked down at him. It took him a moment to recognize Yuuto. Yuuto smiled nervously.
Mashiba looked around, clearly looking for Daisuke. “Where’s your bodyguard?” he asked. “Are you trying to get me beat up?”
Yuuto rubbed the back of his neck. “Ah, haha… well, don’t worry about it… um, I need a favor…”
“Huh?” Mashiba shut his locker door and looked at Yuuto again.
“There’s someone I’m looking for in… err, Shinjuku ni-chome… could you perhaps take me there?”
“Ehh? Really? Are you gay too, Kaname?”
Yuuto frowned. “No, I just… well… I, you know… it’s just…” he started to stammer.
Mashiba laughed. “I could do it for you, if you want…” He stepped closer and Yuuto backed away.
“I’m just looking for someone…” he mumbled awkwardly.
“Okay, I’ll take you there… but Hasabe had better not find out. He’ll kill me,” he said and looked at Yuuto. “And then you’ll have to pay for it.”
“I will make sure Daisuke won’t do anything… he’s busy now anyway.” Yuuto closed his mouth quickly. It was better not to slip anything that might lead Mashiba to learn about Daisuke and Moriyama-sensei.
~*~
Yuuto was nervous about travelling alone on the train with Mashiba, who was practically a stranger. It felt so weird to go downtown without Daisuke. Yuuto never had any reason to go there alone. He looked at the ocean of people that poured out of the train at the stop and without thinking too much, got on with the next wave, following Mashiba closely. Fortunately, other than being pushed, elbowed and shoved around, there were no incidents and he arrived safely at his destination.
“So, who are you looking for? You do realize it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack?”
Yuuto looked around at the busy station, his eyes searching for the exit sign. “He works at a host club… what was the name…” He tried to remember.
“Host club, huh? That cuts it down to a few dozen...” Mashiba snickered.
“I think it was…” Yuuto furrowed his brow in an attempt to remember. “In English…”
“All of them are…” Mashiba shrugged.
“Hmm, Daddy?” Yuuto tried to trigger his memory.
“Ah, Daddy Nutz?”
“Yes, that’s the one!” Yuuto gestured with his fist. “Do you know it?”
“That’s not a host club, that’s a sex club… A rent boy bar, you may say. But there’s a host club near it under the same ownership, that’s probably what you’re looking for.” Mashiba started walking and Yuuto followed him quickly.
“You’re pretty knowledgeable about these things, Mashiba-kun,” Yuuto noted.
“I suppose…” He glanced down at Yuuto. “You need to change out of the school uniforms if you want to go there… do you have a change of clothes?”
“I… I have a hoodie…” Yuuto said quietly.
Mashiba took him to the restrooms inside the train station, where he changed into his clubbing clothes. Yuuto could only replace the gakuran’s jacket with a hoodie, hiding the school uniform underneath.
~*~
The host club, which took pride of its name with a glamorous neon sign, was still closed. Yuuto wasn’t sure if he felt relieved or disappointed.
“So, can this guy you know give us free drinks or what?” Mashiba asked. “Because I know this club where we can get some…”
Yuuto thought about going with him, even though drinking alcohol wasn’t in his agenda. He didn’t really want to break any laws. Or did he need to do that in order to become ‘cool’?
“Are you coming or not?” Mashiba was getting impatient. “I can’t waste my free time standing out here.”
Yuuto was indecisive and Mashiba shrugged and took out his cigarettes. “You’re nothing like Hasabe, how boring… I don’t get how he could choose you over me.”
