Part 2, chapter 15
- XV -
HERE
Jack dozed off in his chair, a book laying open in his lap. It was the day after Christmas and he brought a small plastic Christmas tree into Kris’ room. It was gently shifting lights right now, playing hide and seek with the shadows. Jack never unplugged it. He was dreaming of Kris when she was six years old. It was her first day of school and she was scared.
“Don’t leave me, Daddy,” she was saying, her lips trembling. “I don’t wanna stay here alone!”
“Oh honey,” Jack said. “You won’t be alone! You will make a lot of new friends!”
“I don’t wanna friends!” she said stubbornly. “I wanna my Daddy!”
“Honey, you will like it here, okay?”
“Don’t leave me, Daddy!”
“Honey, I will never leave you. I will always come back for you, okay?”
“Daddy...? Daddy...! Daddy…”
Jack stirred in his sleep.
“Daddy...?”
His eyes flew wide open. “I am dreaming”, he thought and stared at the hospital bed.
“Daddy,” she whispered again and tears crawled down her cheeks. “Oh, Daddy…”
“Kris?” he muttered. “Oh my God, Kris!”
He jumped up, book falling on the floor, chair tipping over. Jack dropped on his knees in front of the bed and grabbed her hand.
“Oh God… Kris!” he almost started sobbing when the door swung open and Laura Kennedy ran in, her eyes wild.
“Jack!” she shrieked. “Michael is awake!”
She saw Kris and pressed her hands against her mouth. She started crying silently.
