Chapter 30
“Wait! Please wait!”, I said, hoping that Iselin would come back, I was sure she could hear me even if I couldn’t hear her. Darien. It felt like an eternity since I had been close to him, even longer since I’d spoken to him. But he was here though, not in that room, not closed behind locked doors. It gave me some comfort. I looked after them until they disappeared into the masses. Someone poked me, I turned around and saw a vampire smiling at me. He held forth a grail filled with some red liquid, /Please, drink./
I stared at the grail and the blood I assumed was in it. He held it closer to my face, I turned my head to seek Vaan’s help, he was looking the other way. /Vaan!/ He turned. The other vampire still held the grail to me, ignoring Vaan. /Just say no./ I swallowed and whispered, “No.” The grail was removed from my face and Vaan pulled me along with him. /I don’t like this./ Vaan turned to me, /No?/ Then his expression changed into a kind one, /Off course not. I didn’t like it either when I was still human. Do you want something to make you feel more at ease?/ /When you were still human…? I got so used to you being a vampire, I forgot that you all once were humans…/ /Do you want it or not?/ /What is it? Drugs?/ Vaan locked his deep blue eyes with mine. I stared back, I remembered his eyes from that night, it seemed so long ago. It had been him, yes, he took my sister that night. He had looked down at me, he had made sleep. As I looked into them now I realized that they seemed sad somehow. Somewhere deep into that blue ocean, there were real emotions, not fake ones to put onto a cold face. They say that a vampire has lost his soul. I didn’t really know.
/Don’t hypnotize me, please, or … do with me like Embla does. I don’t want to lose myself./ /You think you will be alright without it?/ /I hope so./ /Do you want to dance with me?/ I didn’t know what to answer, it was such a sudden question, but Vaan didn’t wait for my reply anyway, he took me down to the masses, we mingled in with the thousands of others, bumping into each other. It was wild, I found it hard to focus on anything in particular, so I closed my eyes and let Vaan guide me. Then it became silent. I opened my eyes again, craziness was still surrounding me, but I could hear no music any longer. Vaan smiled. /What happened? It stopped?/ /No. I just… Well, I know many techniques. I shut it away from us./ /Shut away sound? So that means…/ “.. we can talk normally?” I was relieved, thinking clear sentences was difficult as I always had so many thoughts in my head at once. “You like it?”, he asked me. “Very much, thank you.” A different kind of music began, not so loud. A classic tune. “You do this too?” He nodded. “How..?” I was smiling, these vampire abilities were amusing, and it seemed so practical. “It would be far too difficult to explain to you.” He held my hand in his and his other he laid behind my back and started moving me around, it was a slow melody, and we had to stand close to each other because of all the other vampires, but it felt nice. We had our own space, our own music.
“What melody is this?”, I asked him. “I don’t know. It’s just something I remember, from a long, long time ago.” “How old are you?” “Which years are we counting? Human or vampire ones?” I paused before I said, “All of them.” Vaan sighted and went silent for some time. “Well?” “Trying to remember.” “Is it so hard to remember ones age?” “I can’t remember dates.” I looked at him in question, “Well, you try to remember dates when you lived for centuries! It doesn’t seem important after a while you know. Oh, no, you wouldn’t know, I forgot… I try to remember what things I saw when I was still alive, what the world looked like.” “Judging by your style, could I bet 1200- something?” He laughed. “No. That was when we were still trying to keep up with the world. After that we stopped trying.” “We?” “Me and my sire.” “Who’s your sire?” “You change subjects so fast. But that question is easier to answer: my sire is no more.” “What? Dead?” “More like turned into dust, vampires don’t ’die’.” “Oh. Was it a long time ago?” “She was killed about two weeks ago. Maybe less.” O_O “Killed? Two weeks ago? Oh my God!” Vaan shrugged, “Please mind your language…” “Sorry.. You seem to deal with it so calmly, if someone killed MY sire, I would have kicked his ass!” Vaan laughed, “You don’t have a sire, your not a vampire, you wouldn’t know.” “Still…” “I don’t care about it. That’s how it is. She got killed. Probably by her own wish, Embla wouldn’t have been able to take her out on her own.” “Woah! Slow down now, EMBLA killed her?!” “Oh, don’t trouble yourself with it…” “You confuse me.” “Your not alone.” “I bet.”
Vaan’s POV:
Sheesh, this girl just NEEDS to get the last word.
Back to Helle:
We danced in silence for a while, but I couldn’t get it out of my head. “Wh..”, I started. “Leave the subject.” “But don’t you feel upset?! She was your sire, don’t you at least miss her?!” “No, I don’t miss her. She just …” I looked at him, he seemed uncomfortable talking about it. I tried to control myself and decided not to push the subject.
“She was just using me. And I just used her. That’s all that was between us.” His sudden answer surprised me, I hadn’t expected him to tell me. It sounded bad though, but he was a vampire, I was sure he didn’t seek my sympathy. “Oh, no, I don’t.” /Thought so ^_^/ I didn’t know what to say, so we danced in silence again. Suddenly without knowing exactly why, I asked him, “Did you ever love someone so much, you would do anything for them?” I thought of my sister. I wondered if he understood the reason for my actions. His movements fell out of balance for a split second, the question hit him of guard. “Well, that was an interesting question.”, he answered. “Do you know the feeling of love? Can vampires feel at all?“ “Yes, don’t be silly. We feel. But time has it’s effect on all things, even if we were humans I doubt we would be different. Emotions fade.“ “You didn’t quite answer my question.” He stopped dancing. The music stopped. “I know the feeling of love. It hurts.” I tried to see his eyes underneath his hair, but he had closed them. “Helle…”, he whispered. His eyes met mine, I felt like drowning in them. They seemed so soft, so calming. He held his arms around me and pulled me closer, his face closing in on mine. I knew he would kiss me, but I didn’t do anything to stop it. I waited for it. Waited for the touch of his lips.
“Hope you don‘t mind some company in your bubble of silence.” I jumped, Vaan quickly withdrew and loosened his grip on me. I turned to see Iselin approaching us, holding onto Darien’s arm. “It would be nice with some silence, even my ears get tired from time to time.” She smiled a strange smile at Vaan, I didn’t understand what it was supposed to mean. Vaan glared at her and Darien, his eyes shining. “So nice of you to bring our guest here, I never thought I would see you ever dance with a demon. You have changed so much lately, Iselin, if I wasn’t your sire I might have never recognized you.” “Oh, I never really hated demons, you know that. I was just letting out my hatred ON them.” Vaan let go of me completely and moved over to Iselin, placing his hand under her cheek and tilting her face up towards his. “I know. I know it’s really me you hate.” Then he forced a kiss on her. Iselin didn’t move. I looked at Darien, but was afraid to speak to him, not knowing if I would be allowed to. Even if I wanted to throw myself at him and give him a great hug, I couldn’t do that now, not under these circumstances. Then I noticed; his collar was gone. I started breathing faster. No collar. Then… then he could teleport!
Vaan let Iselin free from the kiss and laid his arm back around me. Iselin didn’t make any effort to hide her anger while staring at the two of us. “You shouldn’t have given her that dress.”, she sneered. Vaan smiled devilishly, “Your right, it looked better on you.” Her eyes narrowed and there’s no describing how uncomfortable I felt. It was her dress. Iselin’s dress. Maybe I should just jump into Darien’s arms and have him teleport us out of here right now. I think I would have if it wasn’t for one thing: Asami. “The girl is onto something.”, Iselin began, “You promised her to see her sister. Maybe you should keep that promise.” “I didn’t promise her that.” Now I butted in, “No! You said that..” Darien quickly laid his hand on me, telling me to stop. Vaan and Iselin eyed each other, then he finally said, “Fine. I’ll take her to her sister. I’ll let her see her.”
“Wait! Please wait!”, I said, hoping that Iselin would come back, I was sure she could hear me even if I couldn’t hear her. Darien.
