Matt's a softie!
Brian yawned and stretched the next morning, having slept in late. He looked at the clock and it showed the time to be 11:45 a.m. Matt had risen much earlier to meet Trent at the ice rink and Brian supposed he would be home any minute. Sighing he got up and pulled on Matt's tee from the day before over his pajama pants. As he slowly padded out of the bedroom he heard Matt's voice speaking in hushed tones.
"I know, but Brian says he really wants to go school," Matt said softly. "Yeah, I know he needs to go home for a while, but can't he, like, come back on a scholarship or something?"
Brian blinked in surprise. Matt's chest was bare and he was standing in his shorts while he was talking to someone about Niko, he was sure of it. Who was he talking to, though? Brian hugged the wall so that Matt wouldn't see him, and listened for more clues.
"He can speak English fluently, doesn't that count for something?"
Matt listened into the receiver intently apparently unaware that Brian was up and about. The small blonde hoped to get more information before he was discovered.
"Look, dad, he's taking an awful risk testifying against that creep," Matt huffed. "Can't you get them to bend on this a little?"
He frowned again. Brian frowned, too. Matt's father was involved?
"I understand about homeland security," Matt sighed. "But can't you do something? He's going back to the same situation he was in before Manny grabbed him. I told you how easy it was for him to convince Niko's family to encourage him to go the first time."
Matt sighed again as he listened to his father.
"No, I don't think it's my job to save the world, but this kid's family is dirt poor and has nothing to offer their children in the way of help." Matt grunted. "Yes, he's over 18. I think he'd pass a GED with no trouble. The problem is he needs someone who knows the system to help him get in."
Brian's breath hitched in his throat and his eyes began to tear. Matt wasn't kidding last night. He really did want Brian to have his way on everything. The feeling was oddly liberating, though he knew he shouldn't feel so elated. Using Matt to get everything his way wouldn't be right. Still, he'd never had such an ardent defender and protector before and he found it so easy to let Matt handle whatever problem floated his way. But he vowed he needed to be strong, too. He shouldn't lean on Matt for everything.
"I doubt he'd stay with Trent any longer than he has to," Matt said to his father. "He has this thing about not wanting to impose on anyone. It took Brian all day to convince him to stay with Trent because he didn't want to impose on us."
There was another period of silence while Matt's father spoke again.
"Brian's doing much better these days," he told his dad. "Tell Cody thanks again for those recipe books. Brian loves to cook and I love to eat what he cooks. It was a great idea."
Brian's heart warmed at Matt's declaration. He loved to feed the taller boy, who was a veritable bottomless pit. Good thing Brian loved cooking so much because Matt was never full.
"Yeah, we're doing fine," Matt went on. "I'm not telling you that, you're my FATHER!"
Brian laughed to himself, imagining just what Grant was asking his son. He was sure it was rare for a father and son to have that close a relationship, though.
"Look, dad, he's getting better and we're fine. Why can't that be enough of an explanation?" Matt sounded a little exasperated now. "Mom never asks me."
Brian held back a small bark of laughter, trying to imagine what Virginia would say to bring up that conversation.
"Fine, then," Matt snorted. "How are you and Cody doing, dad? Any surprises under the sheets?"
Brian snickered quietly, trying his best to stay quiet.
"See?" Matt sneered good-naturedly. "You don't like it when I do it to you, do you?" Matt checked his fingernails then looked up sharply. "No, I DON'T want you to draw me a diagram! Listen, how about this? I don't discuss my . . . activities, and you keep yours to yourself, too. I don't need the visual you're trying to plant in my head! Geez, dad! Now I'll probably need therapy!"
Brian couldn't help it. He laughed out loud drawing Matt's immediate attention. He smiled at the small blonde who was holding his stomach while he giggled.
"Good. I'm glad that's settled," he said into the phone. "I have to go chase a little blonde eavesdropper now. Can you at least try to help me with this?"
Brian calmed himself down, got up and walked toward his boyfriend, willingly surrendering himself.
"Thanks, dad. Bye." Matt hung up the phone and pulled Brian into his lap as he settled himself onto the couch. "How much did you hear?"
"Enough to know you weren't kidding when you said you couldn't refuse me," Brian replied as he gently nipped at Matt's lips. "Don't worry though. I won't abuse my power."
"I hope not," Matt whispered just before his lips closed over his lover's.
-------------------------------------------
Trent brought Niko with him when he went back to Matt and Brian's that afternoon. He and Matt had decided to take the other two boys to the movies. Niko sat down on the couch next to Matt when they got there.
"Where's Bri?" Trent asked as he took off his jacket.
"In the kitchen setting up the crock pot," Matt smiled. "Who likes coq au vin?"
"What is that?" Niko asked with interest.
"Chicken that's braised then stewed in wine," Trent smiled.
"But how did you get wine?" Niko asked. "You're not 21."
"Cody gave Brian a case of cooking wine when we went to see my dad last month," Matt shrugged. "We don't use it often, because Brian's not sure he likes the taste. But he likes to experiment with it sometimes."
"This coke aw vin is strong then?"
"Probably not the way Brian makes it," Matt replied. "He always uses half of what the recipe calls for and adds chicken stock for the rest."
"I'm going to see if he needs a hand," Trent offered as he walked to the kitchen.
When he opened the door, he saw Brian stirring something into the pot then he put the lid on it and adjusted the temperature.
"Hey, Trent," he smiled as he looked up. "Here to prod me?"
"No, actually here to ask you something."
Brian looked closer to consider his friend carefully then gestured to the kitchen table where they both sat down. Trent nervously looked at his hands as he tried to think of where to begin. He knew they had to leave soon, so he had to think fast.
"It's Nik," he finally said.
"Nik?"
"Yeah, I don't call him Niko. He's Nik to me," Trent smiled. "Anyway, I just wanted to get your take on him."
"What do you mean?"
Trent looked down guiltily. He didn't want to give Brian the wrong idea, that he only wanted one thing from the small Greek boy. He wanted to get an honest, unbiased opinion of the guy.
"Do you think?" Trent began. "Do you think Nik's . . . um."
"Do I think Niko's gay?" Brian ventured softly.
Trent nodded and looked back down at his hands.
"Honestly?" Brian sighed. "I don't know. He might be, but then again he might not be. Manny forced him into it when he got here, so he may be completely opposed to another male on male relationship."
"Yeah," Trent replied glumly.
"On the other hand, he may just not have had time to come to that conclusion himself and might need to think about it for a while," Brian added. "He's difficult to read, but that's because he's learned the hard way that he has to hide. Why do you ask?"
"Let's not play innocent, Bri," Trent grimaced. "You know why I'm asking."
Brian shrugged and took a sip of soda from a glass he had nearby on the table. "Want some?" he offered Trent. "I can get you a glass."
"No thanks, little bud. We're getting some in the movie."
"Ah."
"So, I should stop entertaining these thoughts and feelings I have for Nik, right?" Trent asked. "After all, he is leaving soon."
"Yeah, but he may be coming back," Brian smiled mischievously.
"What have you heard?"
"Me? Oh, nothing really," Brian smiled. "Just that he does want to finish school here. He just doesn't want to depend on anyone while he does."
"Well, we can't blame him for that, can we?" Trent asked sadly. "He has no reason to trust anyone."
"True," Brian replied. "Trent?"
"Yeah?"
"Just try not to stare at him so much. Okay?"
"What did he say?" Trent groaned. He knew he was bad at hiding his feelings.
"Just that he can feel you watching him sometimes and that it makes him uncomfortable. He knows you're not like Manny. He's just not used to being stared at."
"Okay," Trent nodded. He could deal with that.
"Let's get going," Matt called from the other room.
Trent and Brian smiled at each other as they got up to comply.
"I know, but Brian says he really wants to go school," Matt said softly. "Yeah, I know he needs to go home for a while, but can't he, like, come back on a scholarship or something?"
