Awakening

Chapter 3- Awakening

Blackness. Nothingness. Numb. Shaylee felt confused. Was she dead? She tried to move her body and felt a single finger move. Then she strained to listen, if she was dead there wouldn't be sound. Would there?
Silence greeted her and as she was about to stop, she heard the faint scratching noise of a quill writing.
"Where am I?" Shaylee thought. "What happ... " and it came crashing down on her. Fleeing, the chaos, the men. THE MEN
She bolted upright eyes wide with fear as a scream escaped her throat. Cold air hitting her chest.
"Whoa, easy there... You're alright, you're safe," a male voice said.
Shay's eyes scanned the room quickly before making eye contact with the face of the man whom just spoke. She recognized the indigo eyes she stared into and more memories flooded her mind. She scampered backwards until she went no further, all the while pain wracked her body.
"Where am I? Who are you?" Shaylee forced the questions out her numb throat.
"Just calm down. You are in a place that no one will hurt you. Right now, you need to lay back down, you have several broken ribs that I had to set to heal," the man replied, arms raised in a calming motion.
Pain throbbed through her body and she glanced down mortified to see her body naked save for white bandages littering her body. She could see repugnant bruises beneath the bandages, some covering entire extremities. Shay snatched at the white sheet that lay by her legs and covered herself eyes flying back to the man, apprehensiveness apparent in her eyes.
"Who are you?" Shay grimaced as the words came out.
"I am Sir Evander Vereabla, of the Great House Venerabla. Please lay back down you are going to ruin my work of patching you back up." Evander gazes at Shay's bandages with the look of pity and remorse. "Those brutes did a number on you," he whispers.
He hears the sharp intake of breath and refocuses on her face to find her frozen with fear. Fear like he had never seen before. She had gone ghostly white and her hands trembled where she held the sheet.
"I know you are from Littoral from the sword that was found with you.  Whether you are high born or not doesn't matter at this moment. My concern is that I found you hanging from a tree being raped by people that work for me. That is a comparable crime to me. All men have been dealt with accordingly by the way," Evander finishes his speech and looks away overcome with emotion.
"I... I wasn't part of the attack. I swear to you I had nothing to do with it," Shaylee stutters out and tears start falling down her face.
"Rest, please." Evander soothingly says as he pours a glass of water. He slowly walks towards the frightened girl. As he approaches the bed he sips from the glass then offers it to Shaylee.
"I know you are from Littoral, but I mean you no harm, drink some water and relax. If I wished you ill will you would not be here, in my home." He smiles faintly as she reaches for the glass.
Shaylee grasps the glass, "Thank you, Sir Evander."
Evander watches as the faintest blush spreads across her cheeks while she concentrates on drinking what was offered.
"You know who I am, yet I don't even have a name to call you." Evander pulls a chair to the edge of the bed and watches the unknown girl hold the glass in her lap. Head bowed the whisper of "Shaylee Sarfaren" escapes the girls lips.
"Sarfaren. That makes sense now. You are from the family of Littoral's mercenary agents. I'm going to assume that the sword you were found with is the legendary sword, Safira. Known to be razor-sharp and able to take down any foe in its path. Named after its magnificent resemblance to a sapphire." Shaylee smiles at the depiction of her father's sword.
"Yes, the one and only. Too bad they turned against your family." Shaylee nods her head then grimaces in pain as a growl is heard coming from her stomach.
"Hungry, are we? Give me a moment I'll get you food." Evander jumps from his chair and leaves, leaving Shaylee to ponder her situation.

~~~~Evander~~~~
"She has finally woken up." Evander states to his brother.
"And? I don't understand you sometimes. She's from the traitorous house that had planned on killing your own twin sister." Antonious stares at Evander. "Your kid sister Ashlynn as well."
"I know brother I've been back and forth while she's been unconscious. But when I found her in those woods..." Evander trails off suddenly saddened remembering what he'd seen. "She was so helpless, and they had taken her innocence. She made me think of both our sisters, that could have been them."
Antonious scoffs, "she probably got what she-"
"Don't finish that sentence brother." Evander tenses, ready for a fight.
"What's this? Baby brother has a thing for his new pet. Better watch out, it might bite" Antonious chuckles and walks away leaving Evander speechless.
As he is walking back to the room housing Shaylee he ponders what to do with her. Throw her out now and she would either die by the end of the week or end up used like she had been before he found her. Keep her and he would have to babysit her until he was tired of her.
"I definitely don't want her demise to be on my conscious. Well I guess she's going to be my new charge."
